I'm embarrassed to say I've never been to this nursery before. I live near it and drive by daily. I was looking for a house plant and had not been able to find what I was looking for. I decided to go to La Sumida to see what they had. First off, they have a large parking lot and spacious grounds with indoor and outdoor nurseries. I loved the hedge animal decorations and large shop which is filled with fun gift items. Best of all, I found my plant and it was only $20! The staff were friendly and helpful. I've gone here for years! For plants, seeds, large planters, and today, I'm going to find a gift in one of their gift stores. I just might also buy a rose bush or some vines I've been dreaming about as well. For me, this and all nurseries are meditative places. Good to recharge your spirit! This nursery has an extensive selection of plants that will appeal to all, from individuals who would like to get into gardening to those who are serial gardeners. We took home two gorgeous hydrangeas with us back to Southern California. And we'd like to complement Francisco for his excellent customer service. what has happened to this nursery? I have been going there for decades and lately....no bales of peat moss, but pancake mix and candles??

Not a fan. The roses turned out to be terrible and got a fungus soon after I bought them. That can happen I suppose, but my main issue is their customer service. The least friendly of any in Santa Barbara nurseries in my experience. read more

Excellent selection and ok prices. Security is quite friendly, and the staff is knowledgeable. The problem lies in finding someone if you are not at the front checkout. Don't waste time looking around if you have a question. Just go back up front and they'll get someone to help right away. (Maybe they keep the employees behind the counter? ; ) read more

Went there for the second time. The first time I went, I just wanted to look at prices. I didn't come across any employees. The second time I went, I wanted some advice on which products to purchase to plant something in particular. There was 4 employees that I could locate, 1 who was very friendly was busy. The other 3 I felt purposely avoiding eye contact with people. They walked away and seem every busy, and in order for me to ask a question I had to walk up to them and ask them since they don't come to you. Once I tracked someone down, he did not seem very happy. Very weird customer service experience. read more

Huge variety, great selection. It's conveniently located off the 101- Patterson exit. The staff is pretty hands off, but if you ask them questions, they are incredibly Knowledgeable and have the answers for you. We were there when the check out line grew and they opened up a register. That's always a great indicator of customer service. Beautiful selection of roses, very well priced. Been getting roses there for years. It's clean and well organized. Could easily spend a while here. Totally worth checking out. read more

Santa Barbara's very best selection of roses. We bought 15 bareroot rose bushes here back in 2005 and they are all doing wonderfully to this day. La Sumida's rose selection is unparalleled against anything else in town. Though they are sold year-round, the best time to plant is early spring so that they can establish their root base by summer. You will find hundreds of varieties here - and they are all top-quality. This nursery gears up for the annual bareroot sale and does a great job at positioning them out. I've come to enjoy this nursery not only for the roses, but for the quality plants in general. Their indoor/shade plant selection is impressive and the staff are all more than happy to answer your questions. The pricing is on the higher side, but well justified as the plants they sell are of utmost quality. Pay a little extra for a plant that is guaranteed to last (with your water and care, of course). I stopped in at this Nursery the other day to buy some shade cloth. I'd never been here so I browsed around a little too. Nice size nursery and good selection of flowering plants in their covered area. They also have a green house area with tropical plants that looked good. All the plants looked healthy and well cared for. The employee that helped me with the shade cloth was very polite, enthusiastic and professional. I was helped quickly and check out process was fast. They have a nice variety of potting soils, planters, tools, gloves, pesticides, rodenticides, and plant food. I'd stop in here again. read more

I am a senior citizen who has been a customer of La Sumida for over 25 years. Yesterday, I had made an appointment with them at 2PM to purchase Double Delight rose bushes. When I arrived, a very unfriendly person behind the counter said "Do you have an appointment?" I confirmed I did. I then asked if I could use the restroom. He said that they don't allow customers to use the restroom. When I pressed that it was an emergency, he yelled at another woman that I wanted to use the restroom. She also said that they don't allow customers to use their restroom. Needless to say, my friend and I left. Never have I been treated with such disdain, unfriendliness, and rudeness. We will be buying our plants from Knapp nursery in Goleta or Pro Garden supply on Milpas instead from now on! read more

Wow, customer service was fantastic and there was a great selection of Christmas trees and holiday decorations! Definitely will be returning to look at all of the holiday items (ornaments, masks, lights, table Decor, holiday plants/pots, small knickknacks, wreaths, garland, mistletoe- and some great gift ideas). This year, La Sumida was a one stop shop (not to mention they have the best avocados in town!). A helper, Tyler, was so awesome and knowledgeable! It was refreshing to say the least. This is a good nursery and great selection. I also think the prices are very reasonable. Some of the employees are not hospitable. I asked if someone could get a hanging plant down for me. NO response, however, after 5min a man came and said ''what plant''. I pointed and after a few attempts and getting a ladder he handed me the plant. I said thanks, No acknowledgement just walked away. I brought the plant to the cahier and she said What Plant. She asked me the price took my card and that was that, NO thank you no do you need help putting in your car NO nothing. Friendly is not that hard to do. read more

Beautiful roses to choose from at La Sumida as well as nice fishtail palms and much, much more. Coming here for over 30 years. I personally think it's important, to research what you are looking for and leave employees alone, no matter what store you are in, retail workers do not get paid enough to field every Jack and Jills question 50+ times a day and do their daily duties, it's a fact of life. Be responsible for what you want, google and do the leg work. Bring a little note pad, measure tape. I keep my questions to a minimum wherever I am. At least this is the way I do things and I credit that to all my great experiences everywhere. I don't hinge my store experience on hardworking under paid people and I take responsibility for what I want and do my research, I get in and out. Long gone are the days of white glove customer service and I personally feel the sooner people recognize that the better for their mental health. Don't let the overall ratings fool you, it was the last nursery I visited for the day and was hands down the BEST out of all of them. I'm speaking for indoor plants but their out door collection is vast as well. Picked up a bunch of interesting begonias, a Hoya, and a self watering pot. Called to find out if there was any Survillas in stock. Alexa told me that she could not identify a plant by that name. Offered to identify the plant if I brought in a cutting. I asked if there was any Fuchsias in stock. She checked and offered to set aside a beautiful Fuchsia for me. When I got to the nursery Alexa was away to lunch; so Jamie, the genius about stock, helped me find the perfect Fuchsia and the California Gold Bougainvillea that I thought was a Survilla. He also helped me find some succulents that I needed to fill in where some Succulent Kalanchoes had died off. Hats off to the outstanding quality of product and fantastic service offered by Alexa by phone and Jamie's knowledge of where the plants I needed. read more

This nursery has one of the best selections around. While the prices are not a deal, they are pretty reasonable. It can be hard to find someone working in the nursery but the staff in the building are helpful and can send someone your way if you need it. Over the course of about 10 years I have purchased several trees and plants and all have survived. read more

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but if you are open for business and willing to take my money, then OPEN your freakin' bathroom or provide a temp alternative! If your bathroom is in use by your employees there is no reason not to open it to your patrons. If you have the resources to pay extra security to manage your parking then you have the resources to OPEN your bathroom. read more

I asked 2 employees if they had any flats of a common type of ground cover, and neither knew what it was, but both walked away without trying to find out if they had any. Their rose selection is impressive, their bedding plants are great, the customer service sucks. I have been an employee of this place twice. The first time in my 20's and me a novice. I learned a lot and very appreciative of what I learned. The 2nd time I worked there I was very grateful for the job. It was during the economy crash. I felt abuse as an employee, simply very under appreciated. So sad to see such a great place go downhill when it was once wonderful. I was never encourage to help customers find what they needed. I was told at one point not to spend more than 5 or 10 minutes with customers ??? My eyes went wide at that. read more

Didnt know they closed at 5:30. Got there just before closing. I'll tell you, even though I bought some stuff as quickly as I could, they made it clear it was time to go. I needed help but no one was interested in talking. Shoot, they locked the gate behind me and sent me out the opposite driveway. Now, I work til 5 so from now on I'll just go to Home Depot and all the folks at La Sumida can get home on time. read more
