Why didn't I write a review years ago? Island Seed & Feed, just go there for all of your gardening needs. If you have questions about gardening, ask. All of their staff are never too busy to stop and help you. They have a big selection of seeds, soils, plants, fertilizers, seeds, tools, books etc. Pretty much everything a gardener needs. Oh yes, did I mention the cutest hats? So cute. I only have a 10x20 garden and I only shop there once a year but it's the only place I shop cause they have the good stuff and I like to support local. I drive all the way from LA county to buy plants here.. the selection is good, it is a local, family but sines, they provide great customer servixe, and I always learn something new. The only place I have ever found all the unique tomato plants, all organic of course.. all the plants are organic. This is one of my favorite gardening stores in town, they also have a great organic options for animal in lifestock feed that are hard to come by and other places, all it very affordable prices. They start their own seeds, and offer all sorts of great heirloom, non-GMO plants, and do it just in the perfect time of season. Besides all the great products they have to offer, the staff is what truly makes this place special. Matt, along with the rest of the team, is extremely knowledgeable about taking care of chickens, along with home gardens, and are some of the most down to earth friendly people out there. Sometimes I stop in just to chat, and they always have great advice. It could be a little difficult to find, and their selection isn't gigantic, but they always have what I'm looking for for the most part. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is trying to get into gardening, or is overall just looking for some advice to make their garden even better. 1st time here was awesome. It was raining so I didn't get a chance to look at their outdoor plants and chicken run. But the woman at the counter was really helpful I told her I'm starting a small garden and explained about the fertilizers and showed me the different types. There are baby chicks inside towards the back and two kitties that just want to be petted. This place had everything from seeds, plants, soils, natural pet products, books. I was referred by an expert in all things plants to this small, quirky little nursery tucked away in Old Town Goleta.. . This place is packed with plants, garden tools, lunique gems as well as very friendly and helpful staff.. He spent time exploring and explaining what I needed to do to help the struggling Mandarin tree that I inherited when I moved into my garden apartment. He gave me several options and never once made me feel dumb or pressure me to buy something. I will be going back when I have the time to meander and check out all the other garden plants and accessories. read more

I just moved to Goleta and was looking for a place to pick up seeds to start a vegetable garden. This is THE place for that! They have a seriously large selection of seeds and even have a bulk seeds section where you just take what you need. In addition, they've started a lot of the seeds that they sell so you can buy seedlings and save yourself 4-6 weeks of growing time if you need instant gratification. Both ladies who work there were extremely nice and helpful for me, pointing me in the right direction and getting me started. SHOCKED by the service I got today. I've been buying garden needs for 11 years from this store and encouraging others to do the same. I've always hailed them as the best in SB. Still trying to excuse their behavior today. The owner was being very helpful but he was too busy and had to go - so I waited to get help from the store manager. She gave me a rapid-fire useless answer as she walked away to ask another customer if they wanted help. VERY RUDE and I have no idea what I could have done to deserve this. But I totally shrugged it off given that she's done a lot to help me with my chickens in the past 11 years. I went on to find things close-enough to what I'm looking for and got ready to pay, but i noticed the kelpmeal, which should be green is black/green mixed. The fertilizer right next to it is all green and it says it's a mix that contains kelpmeal. A light bulb lit up in my head that they swapped the labels my mistake so I took the other stuff. After waiting in line and not seeing a single employee I went to where the manager was standing to let her know I'm all set and she snapped at me again... this time in a VERY fake-pleasant tone saying "I need you to wait until I'm done" - as if I've already asked her before. So I wait for her to finish her chat with the other customer who was playing with their chickens (which happens to be this managers' expertise). When she charged me, she asked what is in each bag and I told her about my concern of a possible label swap and she said "Nope the labels are all right" without looking at the fertilizers at all. So I explained again and she finally looked at the fertilizers and kept saying "no the labels are correct". She refused to address the change in color for the kelpmeal. Finally I told her to charge me for whatever she wants, but that I'm disappointed that she doesn't understand my concern which is: Why is the kelpmeal so black today and if that's normal, why isn't there any black flakes in the mix fertilizer that includes kelpmeal? She kept firing back with insulting responses like "Well you've just been getting the wrong stuff for 11 years" and "Well even though you don't see the black flakes in there they are there..." Well next she started to misidentify my bloodmeal and at the same time the owner came back and she asked him, and he of course agreed with me because bloodmeal has a VERY distinct look. This is when I realized she has little to no knowledge about fertilizer so I asked the owner to confirm the labels and he did. Then I asked about the colors and he confirmed that the kelpmeal was extra dark and the variance in color today was nothing to be worried about. I wound up leaving with the "mix" which I had paid for because I was so appalled by the lady's behavior that I did not want to do an exchange with her. I will continue to buy seeds here; being that they're $1.99 a pack I don't think I'd be offering much support anyways. But I'm done recommending this place and giving them positive reviews. The plants ALL have disease (every single one of them) and their Light Brahma chickens ALL have arrhythmia, so if they can't earn my loyalty with their service I don't know if this place deserves my continued support for any longer. At least at Home Depot there is good parking. read more

This is a perfect nursery for buying locally grown seed starts for herbs and veggies. While small and tucked away in an industrial park, they have a pretty fantastic selection of seeds, fertilizers, nick-nacs, and garden supplies. Their plants are grown onsite and in season, so you know what you buy there will actually do well in the area (can't say the same of Home Depot). They also have excellent prices. Everything I have planted from this shop has thrived! Most of all, the staff are knowledgable, patient, and HONEST. They will tell you what will grow and more importantly, what to avoid. They also provide lots of information on handling the pests and plant diseases particular to Goleta. Overall awesome place! read more
