I swear that, in all the years we have been coming here to eat with the family, the owner/grandfather greeted us in Italian -- partially because my in-laws used to live in Italy and speak fluent Italian. Through the years I have crafted my own version of a "great" pizza, by ordering a plain pizza and adding gorgonzola and aetichokes. I cannot explain the flavor combination, but the tartness of the artichokes and creaminess of the gorgonzola compliment and expound upon each other. We ordered a salad, which was nice, but not great and we ordered pizza which was very good. We each had a different red wine from Italy and they were both good. The music was not too loud and they played nice songs, and there are three big screens with changing slides of scenery in Italy, which is fun. We would probably come back here.

The wine was excellent, and in America you sometimes can't get even one glass of wine for $11. The veal Gorgonzola-cream dish... To. Die. For. Even if you find that kind of cheese overpowering, it's not overpowering here. It was just the right amount to add flavor but not offend. Highly recommended if that sounds like your thing too. The salmon pasta was in a tomato-cream sauce, and I wasn't sure what that would be like taste-wise. But I took a chance. Turns out that it was pretty good. The salmon was not smoked, FYI, and the sauce provided a needed richness to complement the salmon (which can be a pretty bland fish if left on its own). The taste grew on me, and I wound up eating every bit of it. Portions were very generous! And the side-dish of aglio-olio was one of the best renditions of that dish that I've ever had. First of all, they didn't burn the garlic -- which so many restaurants do -- so the flavor was pure and mild, not bitter. Added to the main ingredients were tiny, slightly spicy red pepper slices, and herbs. It was so good I'd order it as a main dish if I ever return (we don't live in the Netherlands, but if we did, I definitely *would* return here)! He sold his old pizza place to new owners and taught them all this tricks but they never convinced me to come back to this place. The pizza's are always excellent and the crust is nicely thin and crispy due to the fact that the dough has risen twice. This is Renato's secret to a great crust. The quality of the toppings and ingredients are very high and always from local organic produce (tomatoes, basil and cheese) or taken straight back from Italy. Renato goes back to his home country at least twice a year to bring the best ingredients home. He even makes his own spicy olive oil! Ask Renato if you can buy a bottle to take back home. My Vale 47 named after Valantino Rossi, was superb. Nice touch adding the homemade buffalo mozzarella after cooking to cool down the spicy meats. The Gorizza topped with grilled peppers, salame picante and blue cheese has always been my favorite. This is real Italian pizza made in the traditional way, they offer Italian genuine appetizers and special dishes if you ask for them. Nice desserts to round it all off. The homemade tiramisu is excellent! The cosy restaurant is stylishly decorated, the staff are always very friendly. I never eat pizza in Amsterdam anymore and always keep coming back to this family run business. Make sure to reserve a table if you want to enjoy Renato's pizza's.
