We decided to stop for lunch while wandering through Mons and were intrigued by the large wood pizza oven that takes up a good portion of the main floor. We were seated immediately at a window on the street level behind the pizza oven. The restaurant is three levels with the second level overlooking the pizza oven. They were not overly busy when we stopped in after 1:00, but the aroma entering the restaurant had us craving a good pizza.
My husband and I shared a Romana Pizza (onions, mushrooms, ham and tomatoes) and a Caprese Salad while our companions enjoyed Veal Saltimbocca and a Margherita Pizza. The Caprese Salad was delicious, fresh tomatoes layered with some of the creamiest mozzarella I've had all topped with a flavorful olive oil, basil and just a hint of balsamic. The pizzas had a wonderful crust which, in my opinion could have stood just a bit more time in the oven, but nevertheless was crispy and slightly chewy - some of the best pizza crust I have had in Europe. Toppings were plentiful, but I could have done with a tad more sauce. Overall a delicious pizza. The Margherita was equally tasty with fresh tomato and loads of cheese. You must drizzle your pizza with the pepperoncini oil - it packs a bit of a punch, but adds a really nice flavor. The Veal Saltimbocca consisted of three nice size pieces of veal topped with mozzarella, prosciutto and a lovely sauce that perfectly complemented the meat. I wish I had ordered this - it was that good.
This is a lovely spot for people watching as it overlooks not only the Grand Place, but also a side street. The service was efficient and friendly. Our waiter spoke both French and Italian - since my husband knows some Italian, it was a bit easier to communicate. I would definitely drop by again if in Mons with a hankering for Italian. read more
