Not much difference between what you could pull out of a microwave late night at a convenience store. Salsa was pureed and straight from a jug. Nothing fresh there. Tortilla chips were the same. Fully processed and fortified with preservatives. No guacamole. We were told avocados are not available in Jasper county, which is likely true, but not an excuse. Make a run for the border. . . county border, that is. They got my order wrong, but never returned to the table to actually ask how our meal was. Guest ordered a quesadilla. It came drenched in a chemical cheese wash with no evidence of a single fresh vegetable. A meal should come with a vegetable. It would be worth it to drive to El Rancherito in Olney, IL, or Los Jardines in Robinson, IL. Effingham likely has palatable Tex Mex there as well.

Continue south a couple of miles on IL 130 to the middle of nowhere and it is there that you, my friend, will find Mis Tres, a cantina oasis in the middle of corn. Mis Tres is by every measure a Tex Mex like any other you will find stamped into nearly every single small town and city in Southern Illinois, with a couple of exceptions. The portions they serve are quite generous. Much food will be served to you. Although the guacamole seemed to turn a little gray. Likewise, this is a very large place. Complete with booths, long tables, a bar, Mis Tres would make a great location for a large party. Food is typical Tex Mex menu, with no surprises or frills, but quite good. I'll also mention Mis Tres is very clean and tidy, a feat for how large the space is. Bright, cantina theme happening inside. Recommend! And happy Cinco!

The chips and salsa were perfect. The salsa is not too spicy and full of flavor. I was also back in Casey a few weeks ago and had the chicken enchiladas. Those were also very good. The rice is good, not dry and not too soggy. We also had the guac and that was also a big hit. The server we had this last time remembered us from our first time there. Great Mexican food and decent priced. The restaurant is very lively and they have Spanish music playing. Highly recommend

And you certainly get what you pay for because the servings were huge and provided us with lots of leftovers. The only thing that I would change is corn tortillas instead of flour...but that's more of a personal preference thing.

Thus, we were hesitant...but hungry with little expectations. Upon entry, we were pleasantly surprised to hear Mexican music and Spanish speakers in the back. I had hope! And yes, i know mojito is a cuban drink. They knew we weren't from town, lol- so we got to talking and learned they had roots from Mexico, then grew up not terribly far from me in Ca.
