We were served a bread basket that was a reuse from a different table. How we could tell? One of the pieces of bread still showed a whole row of teeth marks, only the crust was left. Second clue, the owner herself came not to apologize (that would have been a confession) but to shower us with possible reasons why it happened...we are bakers ourselves, none made any sense to us. She knew she got caught and acted accordingly. Food wasn't impressive at all either, steak (was supposed to be as tender as butter) felt like rubber, the steak knife couldn't handle it without a fight. Poor quality meat. We were greeted by our waitress who appreciated my attempts to speak French but ultimately obliged my preference for English. There were several menu options with the choice of ordering a varying number of courses or to just order a la carte. We enjoyed 3 course meals each including an amuse bouche, octopus, foie gras, fish, steak, and chocolate souffle served with a side of ice cream. The flavors all held true to what the respective dish should have been and spewed out with freshness. Everything was additionally cooked just perfectly. This was our first meal in France and set an expectation for what the rest of pur dining experiences should be. Certainly no regrets!

My wife and I were spending the day exploring the historic downtown Montpellier and were looking…read morefor a nice place to relax and have some lunch and drinks. There are quite a few options in the area so we really took our time checking out the different menus and seating areas. Chez Regis is tucked away in the corner of a very nice central part of the downtown area. My wife really liked the menu options and we had been looking around for awhile so we decided to give it a try. We were immediately seated as it was not very crowded at first, and were sat at a small table for two. We asked for a little bit bigger table to have a little more room but were told no, we had to sit at a table for two since there was only two of us. We sat on the outside patio and enjoyed the fresh air and watching all that was going on around us. By the time we were finished, there were a lot more customers that had arrived since we were first seated. We sat down and ordered drinks while we reviewed the menu. The menu had quite a few selections but we quickly noticed the main specialty and most of the options were Moules...or mussels. I ordered the Moules Gratinee and my wife ordered the Moules a l'escargot. Wow! These were by far the absolute best mussels we have every had...and definitely the best mussels we had during our two week trip to France. Both dishes were full of great flavor and were super delicious. The mussels were not tough at all and even though the serving was quite large, we devoured them all! We were actually quite surprised to see how large the serving was, especially for the price which was very affordable and probably the best price we saw for mussels during our visit as well. Our meal also came with a side of fries...which were also perfect! The staff was very friendly and attentive and we also used the restroom, which was inside the actual restaurant. The inside was very nice as well and the bathroom was very clean. Our only negative would be the table situation. As you can see from the pictures, the dishes were quite large. When you add drinks, bread and side of fries for each of us the table was quite cramped. Of course, the meal made up for it and we really enjoyed our experience at Chez Regis. I highly recommend you give Chez Regis a try, you will not be disappointed!
