We were working at Villa D'Este for about a week, which means two things:
1) We didn't have enough time for a leisurely Italian meal.
2) We definitely didn't have the cash to dine at Villa D'Este.
One evening when we had about a half hour between events, a coworker and I decided to take the short 3 minute walk up the street to La Piazzetta. Although it says "Take Away" on the window, I was still a little hesitant walking in. From the outside it kind of looks like a wine shop. Once inside, we found that, not only do they sell wine, this place is an oasis for anyone who is looking for something quick and less pricey...and a diet coke (I know, it's a problem).
Inside, the place is cozy. There is a large selection of wine and various condiments, as well as a cooler with beverages and cheeses to go. But the best part is the large case of pre prepared foods for take out. They have just about everything you could want...pastas, meats, vegetables, cheeses, cured meats, you name it, they've got it. They'll even heat your selection for you and wrap it with love for you to take with you.
The items change slightly each day but the most popular items seem to stay the same. I know this because I think we went in there for every meal for the last 4 or so days of our stay. It was actually kind of embarrassing because the same super friendly guy was working there whenever we went in. Since all of my coworkers caught on and started going too, I'm sure he thought we were some kind of a cult. People dressed in the same outfit, constantly coming by for takeout, I'm sure it made for some interesting dinner conversation.
The best part is that the food is delicious, obviously prepared fresh daily, and very reasonably priced. I think I got a quarter chicken, a huge portion of potatoes, and a ton of green beans for about 10 euro. The people who work there always have a smile and a warm greeting when you go in, and they seem to have a close relationship with those in the community. When we were there, lots of families came by at night for some apps or dinner to take home.
Since so many people realize that this place is awesome, and since they take their time serving each customer, be prepared to wait at busy meal times. It's ok, it won't take long and it's worth the wait! read more
