I came for an early lunch in a sunny for me Saturday and walked in soon after noon - and was the first lunch customer. The waiter / owner spoke just enough English and I just enough French for me to choose a smoked duck cake for my starter. I had that with a glass of white wine. Both to die for. I ordered a casserole with Strasbourg sausage and mushrooms for my main course and asked the waiter to recommend an appropriate glass of wine. He brought a glass from the same winery - again sensational. The owner told me he loves running a small place where he can make people happy because he can ensure every meal is excellent. It works for me!

It was certainly difficult not to feel welcome here with the enthusiasm and the witty treatment we got. The menu changes constantly and there is therefore only options you'll see on the board, if you can decipher it. With a limited knowledge of French and not the best ability to decipher swirly French handwriting on a blackboard, I was happy that we got the short version explained in English. We had starters and cannelloni for our main course and a glass of white wine. The portion of cannelloni was rather big (by our lunch standards), so we had to give up at some point, but it was not for the lack of trying our best. The food was good, but could have done well with a bit more oomph in the taste, though I was very satisfied with my wine.

Our light lunch of the cheese plate and salad delivered. The cheese was rich and delicious with the truffle brie a highlight of my cheese adventures in France. The salad was more American than French but was executed well: crisp, fresh ingredients, bacon, cheese, beautifully fried chicken, and a flavorful in-house made dressing.

On that note, we stumbled into this restaurant after being rejected by a couple others in the neighborhood that would not sit us because they were closing for the night. Perfectly understandable because I too would want to go home after a long day and not have to deal with another bloody tourist and his finicky girlfriend that wants lemon and filtered ice in her water.... I liked this restaurant from the outset, it is well lit and you get the feeling you are dining in a former warehouse or something with its deep set, painted over brick walls. The Mussels and frites and the Le pectroas with frites were superb. And so was the service. Even though we didn't speak the language the server was patient and assisted where he could in his broken English. We made it work and had a great relaxing meal.

My friends and I kind of missed out a bit because we arrived late at around 2 or maybe 3 pm. The place is very clean and we were seated upstairs. The setup of the table was neatly arranged and I liked the orange napkins (favourite colour). This restaurant is ran by one guy and one guy only. Props to him! He maneuvered around the two floors to serve, take orders, clean out tables, put away plates, prepare food, and the works. Seriously. I have never been to a restaurant ran by one person and can still be efficient in a way. The space is average in a European level. It can sit about 15 people. We came around 2-ish and the lunch rush is over and there's not much left on his menu. He served what was left from the lunch menu he fixed that day. It was still a hefty meal for four people: salad and a bit small ratatouille, some pizza, smoked duck and mozarella fixed on a salad. The smoked duck was good with the regular greens. The pizza's dough was soft which I didn't mind and the ratatouille fixed my local Provencal meal for the trip.

There were quite a few local patrons in the restaurant when we arrived. The menu isn't fixed and changes day to day,and it's run by a single chef who tends to the customers as well as prepare the food. Even though he was running the entire restaurant, we still got our food within 15 mins of ordering. The food was fantastic- the ratatouille, tarts, and smoked duck were delicious. However, since we sat down close to 2pm, there wasn't much food left, so I recommend coming around noon so that items on the menu are still available. Despite this setback, the chef was very hospitable and made sure everyone had a taste of the remaining dishes and even gave us the remainder of the salad. I strongly recommend giving this place a visit for the local dining experience. We were treated very nicely, and the chef did everything in his power to make sure our meal was enjoyable.
