An amazing, out of the way bakery that supplies some of Rome's best restaurants with baked goods…read more In addition to their substantial baking operations, they operate a small walk in shop at the front of their bakery. I found out about Palmieri when they delivered several cakes and pastries to a local restaurant my group was visiting. I jotted down the bakery name, and we made it a point to seek them out. They are located very close to the Vatican metro stop, in the interior courtyard of a building. Look for a small bronze plate with their name on the outside. Pasticceria Palmieri bakes some of the best Italian classics that I've had the pleasure to try from them. So far I've sampled their cannoli, tiramisu, and a phyllo custard pastry. All three were amazing! On top of the sweet stuff, they also make breakfast breads such as croissants, and savory flatbread/pizza like items. If you are in Rome, make it a point to seek this place out. If you are near the Vatican, you have no choice. I'll be dreaming about that cannoli until I return.

Yeah, I saw the segment about this legendary late-night bakery on Andrew Zimmern's Rome episode…read more And yeah, I was further intrigued by the famous sign with the provocative slang connotation that greets visitors as they carefully head down the somewhat treacherously steep staircase into this unique and somehow exciting basement space. What I wasn't prepared for was the very personal and intimate encounter with the founder/owner/chief cook/probably not bottle-washer who is Antonio Lambiase. We arrived "early" (about 23:00 on a Friday night in July) to find the maestro hard at work crafting his famous pastries for the crowds of nocturnal visitors that were sure to follow. Although he spoke almost no English, we were able to communicate through my very limited Italian and the help of a couple of his immigrant assistants who had also had limited abilities in the two languages. My wife and I found him to be perfectly charming, playful as well as typically Italian. He didn't hesitate to ask me how old I thought he was and to flex his biceps to demonstrate his fitness and machismo. When we showed interest in several of the items already completed he came around from behind his work station with a piping bag full of whipped cream which he proceeded to squirt on the backs of our hands for tasting and made romantic suggestions by drawing hearts with the cream. Needless to say, this was not an experience that we will soon forget. We made a fairly large purchase of an assortment of his sweet concoctions and took them to go to enjoy back at our hotel. I'd like to report that they were as memorable, but actually they were just ok. During our two weeks in Italy we certainly enjoyed much better pastry, but on a late night after reveling with friends I could easily see myself returning to this super cool spot!

They also sell cheese, truffles, dried and fresh pasta, sauces, and other wares of that variety. The staff is very helpful and friendly. From an American: I came to Rome as the last leg of my trip to explore the history, but also to get…read morea taste of the local cuisine. This can be very difficult to do when traveling in any touristy city, and especially in Rome. I passed this restaurant/farmers market earlier in the day and noticed there were no signs/menus in English. There was nobody hustling me to come in and sit down. There was only one woman, who I believe is the owner, that speaks limited English but was very kind. I thought eureka, this is the place! Finally, after having tried dozens of restaurants throughout Italy, I found my favorite and most authentic Italian food (my limited knowledge leads me to believe it is native to this region). I came in for €10 Aperitivo around 17:30. The owner gave me a delectable plate of eggplant lasagna, sautéed greens and grilled vegetables, with a bread puff filled with vegetable pieces similar to the consistency of a hush puppy. I was floored. If you're looking to get a taste of local Italian cuisine while in Rome, this is the place. Could not have been more satisfied after trying Carbonara, Gnocchi, and pizza dishes cooked by foreigners and being subsequently begged to leave a tip which is not customary in Italian culture cuisine. I've said what I needed to say. Enjoy!
