"Better to die on your feet than to live forever on your knees." Yeah! Viva la revolución!
La Pasionaria (the passionflower) is a beautiful statue, a stylised woman with arms raised in triumph. Like many of the statues and monuments in Glasgow it's easy to miss it unless you know where to look, which in this case is by the Clyde near Custom House Quay.
The statue is for Dolores Ibarruri and the 534 volunteers (65 of whom were from Glasgow) who died during the Spanish Civil War, fighting against the Franco regime. It was designed by Arthur Dooley who was commissioned for it in 1974. It was restored in 2010, having been a little neglected in the intervening years.
Apparently the statue is surrounded by controversy. It was originally supposed to be bronze but that was too costly (this version is painted fibreglass) and its construction was funded by Trade Unionists and Labour movement supporters. At one point Glasgow's Conservative Councillors vowed to tear it down if they were able to unseat Labour but somehow I doubt that, if they ever do, they'll be able to justify destroying such a beautiful piece of art. read more
