One day while doom scrolling through social media photos of this ShopRite popped up on my feed. I…read moream a sucker for retro architecture, especially if it has an Asian inspiration so this immediately caught my eye. Conceived by Ned Gladstein in the 60's, Gladstein's love of Japanese architecture found its way to this structure with its Pagoda-inspired rooftop and even Pagoda topped phone booths off to the side! For those wondering, yes, the booths did have functional phones in them 20+ years ago but they have since been removed. What compelled me to drive a half hour out of my way to check this place out was not just the architecture, but also finding out that soon this one will be closed and replaced with a newer ShopRite nearby. That one is set to open in Fall of 2025 (ground has already been broken) so I did not want to miss the opportunity to visit what may be one of the most unique ShopRites around! The Japanese/Asian theme does not only show itself on the outside, but you'll find some on the inside as well. Several walls have artwork of bamboo and dragons on them. The signs over each aisle have dragons as well. Over the dairy section there are faux rickshaws and fans. The numbers on each cash register lane use an old-style Asian-esque font. Now, sure, you could see this as being a bit odd or even kitschy but honestly I think Gladstein's intentions were pure. He wanted to pay homage to something he loved and I did not find any of the decor disrespectful. The thing about this supermarket is that it IS very old, and it has not seen a dramatic renovation in quite some time (from what I can tell). This means that the aisles are TINY compared to say, my local ShopRites in Garwood or Linden. Some islands in the deli area are set at angles to fit them in and it creates some very awkward areas to walk through. Also be warned: the customers here seemed to all be in a RUSH. Carts were charging down these aisles that barely fit two carts side by side. I was constantly dashing out of the way of some shopper who apparently had a cheese emergency or something. It was very odd. Kudos to the staff here. Everyone we talked to was super friendly and helpful. One gent talked us through all their shredded cheese options (and they make in-house mozz which is cool). Check out was smooth and the cashier was super friendly. I would not want to shop here regularly, but as a special visit I was very happy. I hope the new ShopRite being built carries over design elements like the Pagoda and I hope they move the phone booths over there too. This is a unique supermarket and worth a visit!

What a letdown. I've been shopping at the Caldwell Shoprite for over twenty years, and I was…read morelooking forward to the new location. As much as I liked the convenience and quick "in and out" quality of the smaller original location, the idea of a new, larger store with more inventory and variety was exciting, but sadly, all the negative qualities of this new store have discouraged me from shopping there, and frankly after shopping there just twice I don't plan to return. There are very few handicapped parking spaces, and they only exist at one of the two entrances. Although for reasons passing understanding, there's a solitary handicapped spot out in the farthest corner of the parking lot. What's that about? The main entrance to the parking lot is also at the exact spot where the main entrance and exit to the store is located, which causes an almost omnipresent bottleneck of cars waiting to get into the parking lot, while customers are entering or existing the store with their carts. The inside of the store is impressive at first glance, but that only lasts until you start actually shopping. The produce department somehow feels smaller than the old store with less inventory. The small produce bins are for the most part are equally sized, with no apparent thought given to what they would contain. For example, bananas are in the same size bin as the plantains. Which do you think they sell more of in Caldwell? So, the bins with the popular/everyday items need to constantly be refilled and are consequently frequently empty. Why they didn't make larger bins for bulk items like tomatoes, potatoes and onions is baffling. The deli counter is also smaller than the older store. It's now a small counter where both the customers and the deli people battle for space. In addition, the store has created yet another crowded bottleneck there. Customers who are waiting at the deli counter act as a human barrier to all the other foot traffic that can't get past them. Again, poor planning. The bread counter. Again, smaller than the old store. I've included pictures. The new store has a large dining area with tables that divides the produce area. It's nice idea in concept, since the store does have an upgraded hot foods counter and more prepared foods, but the reality is that the area seems mostly unused aside from the few Shoprite employees I saw eating there, and it acts as a sort dead zone right in the middle of the produce area. The Morristown Shoprite and Livingston Shoprite have similar dining areas, but are wisely located outside of the main shopping area. The aisles are another frustrating design choice. They are loooong. Why they did not make some sort pass-thru at the midpoint, just like the Morristown Shoprite did and Wegman's did with their long aisles is a question. There also seems to be an issue with where the store places it's products. Every supermarket in the country puts the ice cream cones with the ice cream (and Caldwell used to). Now the ice cream cones are at the opposite end of the store in the aisle with the crackers or cookies. It took three employees to find them. This counterintuitive placement of products seems to be a running theme of which that is just one example. On the plus side, the store does sell liquor and beer now, but again, they have chosen to place that section right at the entrance to the store, bisecting the food aisles, which is simply odd to me. The bottom line is the store is new and it is beautiful, but the planning and execution for real, everyday shopping is sorely lacking. Choosing style over substance was a bad choice. Hopefully it's one they can correct. Until then I'm driving to Parsippany, Livingston, or Little Falls (heck, even West Orange).

It's very convenient to have right down the street, no need to pop onto a highway. Some of the reviews say the prices are higher, and that may be true. Lucky Farmers Market is a non-descript bodega perched in a four deep mini-mall on Bloomfield Ave. in Verona (co-occupied by Subway and double Krauszers). Sounds awesome, right? Actually, it is. Inside is where you actually get lucky.* Fresh fruit and vegetables in droves for way less than your not-so-supermarket. From gargantuan Asian pears to three kinds of cucumbers to berries of all kinds, Lucky will not let you down on the fruit and vegetable end. This is not a full market so don't get all, "That dude said this place had everything," because they don't have everything. They just have good produce, a smattering of market items (good, healthy options) and THIS IS WHERE YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION - a full-time sushi chef that churns out the best sushi around, restaurant or not. Yes, a small bodega will give you excellent sushi in a plastic container and you won't have to overpay for it. If you take anything from this, just get the Tuna/Salmon sandwich sushi and thank me later. Lucky is my go-to spot for the items I rely on - fruit, vegetables and sushi. I do the bulk of my shopping at a regular, large and fat market, but I get all my fruit and vegetables here and I get dinner here 2x a week, every week. Everyone who runs this place and works here is super friendly and a pleasure to see every day. In a pinch, you can get flowers here which actually last a while too. What else is there to say? If you don't ever have a reason to go to Lucky Farmers Market, no one will care (not even your Mom), but if you do have a chance to swing by with fruits, vegetables, sushi or something interesting in mind you just might have found your spot. ____________________ *Well, you might not get lucky if you are thinking something other than groceries or sushi, but I get Lucky almost every day.

When I asked my daughter where she wanted to celebrate her birthday; she said Calandras. We made…read morereservations and got there early so sat at the bar for cocktails. It was a very lively place to be and the server was such a delight. We had a sangria, a mimosa and a bullet 95. All excellent! In fact I had another sangria with dinner because it was so light and refreshing. My daughter loves arancini and theirs was perfection. The right amount of crunch on the outside with the tastiest sauce. She remembered a fancy grilled cheese that her dad made when she was younger. He told her it was mozzarella en carozza and ordered it for us to share. Omg, it was amazing. Grilled cheese for adults! I was getting kinda full from the drinks, appetizers and the most incredible bread (our server sent a loaf home with us-their ovens truly make a difference) so I ordered a side of Mama E's meatballs and risotto. Both were so very good and a couple of meals for me. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his sole oreganata. The right amount of seasonings and the sole was cooked perfectly. It was delicate and flakey as it should be. My daughter picked the tortellini Alfredo and loved it very much. We were too full for desert but the server was super nice and brought a scoop of ice cream over a brownie and sang to my daughter. All in all it was an excellent meal, the service was amazing and the restaurant was everything we wanted it to be to celebrate a Milestone birthday. Weather permitting, you can opt to eat outside, inside or by the bar area if you want a more lively evening.

It comes with fresh cheese. Olive oil, red pepper, salt, and pepper are at the table. We ordered an eggplant rollatini appetizer which was three good size rollatinis, plenty for two people, even maybe 3-4. For entrees, we ordered short ribs and a salmon filet stuffed with crabmeat. The waiter asked how I wanted the salmon which I thought was odd for a stuffed filet. The entrees were both good, the short ribs were nicely done and seasoned. The kitchen or waiter made a mistake and brought me a piece of salmon, not the stuffed one I ordered. It was thick so I thought maybe it was stuffed but seared closed. As I cut in, I saw it was plain salmon. It was OK but very dry and not what I ordered. I cut into the middle, thinking maybe it was just stuffed in the center. Nope. I also then realized the side veggies were not what was on the menu (because they brought the wrong dish). I let the waiter know and he apologized. Mistakes happen and I was not going to insist on a new dish when I had eaten about 1/3 of this one. They did bring over a small cup of shredded crab meat and a sauce. Again, mistakes happen but what irked me was they didn't even adjust the price, charging me higher price for what I ordered, not the lower priced dish they served. I was not looking for a free meal or even a free dessert, but you don't correct the price on what you served??? Again, staff was all nice, but this is my second time there and second eh experience. Calandra does have a nice restaurant up the road, Med Grille, and that is always top notch.
