I don't know the area well, but it seems there's some good choices. The one that stood out for me, and was closest and open, was Caffè Rosso on Wigan Lane. From the outside, Rosso is unassuming, but the first thing I notice is that at this point of the morning it can't have been open long, but there were already people dining in the outside seating, and two tables occupied inside. The inside of Rosso is modern with retro and vintage touches, but as well as being clean and pleasantly decorated and furnished, it feels welcoming. The details around the room such as newspapers and magazines for customers to read are nice, but its small details like free wifi, and books on things like trips around the British Isles that make you realise that not only are you welcome, but if you want to stay a while and relax, you're welcome to. When I mentioned to one of the owners that I liked the feel of the place and the décor, he thanked me and said that it was a carbon copy of their living room at home, but without the television. I think I can believe that, because it's very welcoming and comfortable. Upon reading the breakfast menu (a specific "good morning!" menu, which I like the idea of), and the main "welcome" menu on the table, the two words I would use to describe Rosso are "provenance" and "passion". The details given in the guide exude pride at listing where their foods and ingredients are sourced, their views on ethics and quality, and emphasising the home-made elements, and the awards they have earned. I like this. If you have something of quality and you know it, then by all means, shout it from the rooftops! As it was morning, I opted for some granary toast with marmalade and a pot of tea. I liked that I was able to ask for decaf tea, skimmed milk, and sweetener, without it being an issue that it can often be at small establishments like this. Sounds healthy doesn't it? Only thing is, I had my eye on a particularly nice looking slab of Belgian chocolate tiffin in a cake cabinet on the main counter next to an equally delicious looking key lime pie. Well it'd be rude not to, wouldn't it? I ordered with one of the owners at the counter. He was friendly, welcoming, and professional. The tea was perfect as to be expected, but the tiffin was really excellent! Rich and chocolatey, it was the perfect little treat, and knowing it was home-made was another nice touch. I'd be tempted to come back just for this little beast, but in seeing that they also do Afternoon Teas, I'm sure I could be persuaded to return a few times... just for research purposes of course! As it stands, I wasn't expecting to find anything amazing early on a Monday morning in Wigan, but I found a real gem. I must explore Wigan more! You've got something good on your hands, Rosso, and you deserve your awards and praise! I only came for a brew and some breakfast, but I left feeling great! I will definitely be back

The staff was just as warm & inviting as the atmosphere itself! I had the appetizer of bread w/ pesto & balsamic vinaigrette dipping sauces & my friend opted for the hummus. My bread was so warm & fresh, perfectly toasted. The dippers were sooooo yummy! The pesto was very flavorful & the balsamic was absolutely fantastic! I had a try of my buddy's hummus & I must say it was tasty as well. I don't even care for hummus, but I'd actually order it from this cafe if I visit again. Since it was a little gloomy & rainy the day we went in, it was perfect for sipping tea & my cappuccino. The service we received was very prompt and courteous.

We got homemade tomato soup with salad, cheese, and bread. The tomato soup was great but was a little odd with lots of bread in it. I didn't eat the bread bits but the soup was really good. The cheese was also really yummy and came with some British sour fruit spread stuff which I hadn't had before. When it came time for dessert, I had no clue what any of the items were on the menu as they were English desserts I'd never seen before... I finally decided on "Sticky Toffee Pudding" which turned out to be a very nice soft, warm gingerbread tasting cake with hot caramel syrup. My British friend with me got "Summer Pudding" which was soaked bread with berries. It was really good and overall a really great lunch.

This is a nice Starbucks location, located at Charnock Richard Services Northbound…read more It is split across two different areas, one is located at the front of the entrance to the services, this is the area usually open for longer, including on holidays such as Christmas Day, while towards the back of the Northbound, there is another area, this area does have nicer views of the motorway and more comfortable seating, but the branch at the front has the convenience of being quick and easy to get in. I have visited this location on a couple of occasions now, service is generally pretty good, credit must go to the barista who was working on Christmas Day, he did not let the fact that he was working alone on Christmas Day affect his service, he still made a great drink and was very friendly to customers, I did feel bad as he told me his manager was switching between the Starbucks at the Southbound Services and then the Northbound, as with large queues he shouldn't have been alone. With this being a franchised location at a motorway services, it does end up costing more here, my Venti Iced Gingerbread Latte cost £4.80 before discounts, rather than the usual £4.60 - a difference of just under 5%. 4* - A good Starbucks for a motorway service location, a great stop off while you're on the road, but a lack of comfortable seating (in the main area that is open longer) and the price can put one off slightly.

Overall - a good location for a quick lunch, but not if you're looking for a nice relaxing cuppa with a good view. I guess it does what it says on the tin - a good solid safe in the town centre.
