The centre of Potsdam is very touristy and cute with a lot of restaurants behind the Brandenburg Gate (yes, they have one here too) and down the long, rifle barrel-straight main street - Brandenburgerstrasse - to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. There's also a tourist information centre where I asked one of the ladies for a lunch recommendation. She said they weren't allowed to provide these, but suggested I try one of the places around the old Dutch Quarter, which I did; La Maison du Chocolat.
I ordered the entrecôte which was cut from Simmental beef. This came with a little lettuce and tomato salad and was served on garlic bread covered with spinach and melted Roquefort cheese. To drink I ordered half a litre of Cotes du Rhone (a perfect amount for lunch I think - it's less than a whole bottle so you don't feel like a full blown alcoholic, but so much more effective than a single glass).
My meal was basically an extremely upmarket steak sandwich, but I mean that in a really, really good way. The meat was superb; cooked blue exactly the way good steak deserves to be, sprinkled with rock salt, and sandwiched between two halves of a large, white bread roll. It was a little chewy (but personally I prefer it like that) and extraordinarily tasty - I struggled to recall anywhere that had served up a better piece of beef. The Roquefort melt was the icing on the cake providing a rich, intense flavour that any lover of blue cheese would appreciate. The red was lovely; soft, but with enough body to hold it's own against the strong flavours in the dish. Lovely meal and the service was fast but unobtrusive, and by that I mean they basically gave me what I asked for then left me alone to devour it in peace. La Maison du Chocolat is one of those serendipitous places you occasionally find on holidays where you really have no idea where you are or where you're going, but somehow end up exactly where you need to be. read more
