This is where I take my old clothes and odd objects…read moreduring the quarterly fits of purge that ravage my closets, and this is where I go to dig through the sweaters and secondhand dresses and eyeball the furniture and sometimes find heartbreakingly adorable handmade doll houses and tiny wooden chairs. Renaissance is a non-profit that provides employment opportunities for Montrealers who have difficulty finding jobs - you need to be on EI and have basic French to apply. Lots of the folks who work here are new immigrants, or people who have had a really hard time finding or keeping work for other reasons. This to say, customer service is not always a highlight here, but folks are friendly, prices are low, there are finds to be had, and relax! It's good for your patience and soul to go at the prevailing rhythm and speed of the Renaissance.

What you may find... * Non-digital media-related stuff like 8mm movie editor and splicers, a Polaroid camera kit, 45 rpm vinyl singles, or real vintage typewriters for banging out your novel without spellcheck; * Classic casserole dishes without exposure to microplastics or non-stick PFAS; * Dial and pushbutton phones for adding back your landline; * Percolators for your morning coffee; * Children's banks for teaching them how to save money; and * Other useful and now obsolete ephemera. Tucked in there were other things that may make you smile (or not if you think about it) such as a nun doll with torn skirt, possibly the source of someone's nightmare. Fun?! Those genuine, truly old, old school finds at Kitschà L'os were like traveling back in time and worth the journey!

The store is set up in two, although not perfectly distinct sections: vintage and antique items (genuine) and vintage-inspired/novelty items. While the latter might have made me like the place less it's so tastefully set up and the prices are so generally reasonable that I can't say boo. Additionally, having the two sections probably makes gift shopping (for your fave Kitsch lover) a dream. When I visited this weekend there was a big labour day sale- I spotted beautiful vintage Pyrex bowls for prices like $25. Obviously you could probably snag these kinds of things for cheaper if you combed through a Village des Valeurs, by why bother if these guys are going to dig up the good stuff? They have a great selection of clothing and books. I managed to find two work appropriate shirts and one was Uniqlo! (one my favourite brands). I also found a book I liked for only $3.75. What I love about Renaissance is that they are tax free and they accept debit, credit, and cash! Lines are a bit long to try on, but that was to be expected.

When they are asked where you can plug them in for testing, the staff will tell you these players have already been tested to work. Often they do not, however. I complained about this but they just 'thumbed up their noses', and ignored it. so supposedly they help out poor people but this questionably legal tactic suggests otherwise.

The Laval one is small with a practically non-existent food court but the wealth of independent stores make it a popular hub for those of use who want to buy consumable goods over the traditional bartering at the countless kiosks inside the market inside. Sami Fruit is one of the best places to buy fruits and nuts,.they have a butcher place for great cuts of meat, a bakery that does a great job, several competent fish markets ... to be honest, the Marche Aux Puces is now actually a half decent farmer's market at this point with a mediocre "marche au puces" section. The marche au puces sections is crowded but interesting things can be found. It's a bit hectic on the weekends but I'd rather have that than the begging and annoyance you get going there being harassed by vendors during the week. Deal can be made, sometimes great but be careful, some will gladly rip you off. Parking is aplenty but people here REALLY CAN'T PARK NOR DRIVE!!! So I park far away! Beyond that, a nice place to visit, particularly for the consumable goods.

Nostalgic pieces, quality furniture, mid-Century, glassware, dining and cookware, kitsch, you name it! So much so cool! Absolutely check out all my pics! Certainly there are deals to be found. The vendors also really know how to present their wares. Plan on coming back to Marché aux Puces St-Michel on my next Montreal visit and recommend you stop by to discover either something to buy or make you smile! In terms of the things for sale, you could say this is a true flea market and for once, I didn't care that this indoor market didn't have a single food vendor. While I ended up snatching a bargain vintage shirt for $5, I saw everything from furniture and paintings to LPs and rugs. We spent a good 40 minutes both upstairs and downstairs, and would definitely return. There was parking behind the building but it was limited, and traffic immediately around the market was pretty heavy. We ended up finding street parking a few minutes walk from the market and didn't mind it at all. Although I had enough Canadian cash on me so paid in cash, I recall they accept an electronic payment method whose name I don't remember. I hope the marche stays open for a long time.
