La Jicara is a delicious, healthy, lovely restaurant in a great location in Centro, with not only great food but very supportive of local culture, arts and education. I love the salads, the hummos, and guacamole -- sure, you can get these in other restaurants but at La Jicara, the quality and freshness are assured. The people who run the restaurant, the manager and servers are all so nice and even when super busy always take care of customers. We are staying one block away and La Jicara was recommended to us. Delicious food / had pear and walnut salad, spinach and mushroom ravioli, and mezcal margarita and concluded with Dulce de leche crepe. There are small book stores with a variety of Spanish language and indigenous literature, children's literature, and a gift shop. You probably will find a sixty year old progressive gringa with dangling earrings and Birkenstock sandals getting her foodie fix after and afternoon shopping for Zapoteca handicrafts. This is an exceptional spot - with a conscious attitude & kindness showing in their efforts. The food was exceptional and very reasonable. The vegan "menu of the day" had a main dish, soup, salad, small dessert and drink for $120Mex. We also got an organic curry chicken dish which was excellent - we really appreciate being able to get organic meat at a restaurant - which is typically difficult for us. They have some additional shops that complement the restaurant well. Great little vegan, vegetarian, paleo restaurant. I recommended this place. Nothing fancy just simple public house with great flavors. There is always a daily special on the chalkboard which usually includes: the daily agua fresca. read more

Restaurant, bookstore, cultural center.. Very casual. Political. Great tostada appetizers, I had one of carrot salad, another of kim chi. A wide selection of beers.. There's a platform for presentations - on one of my visits a transsexual gave a lengthy talk on the subject, and their experience. It was well attended.
