We came here with friends for a birthday dinner and left having been wowed! We've eaten a lot of different places in the world but never in a cave under a 2000 year old amphitheater - that changed when we stepped into the Grotto!
Literally located under the Thèátre Antique d'Orange - This beautiful subterranean restaurant boasts not only a brilliant wine list and sublime food, it's the first place we've ever been that was the wine storage facility for the Romans who lived here two millennia ago. In Washington, where we're from, old is from the 1800s...this was next level.
Upon entering you're greeted by a delightful host (who I believe is the owner) and taken to your seat. The ceiling is roughly 9 feet high and carved under the coliseum like amphitheater above. They have prix fixe and stand alone options. We were amazed at how reasonable the prices were. Around a 30€ for four courses was incredible. The foie gras ( cooked or raw) was the best we've had. We had duck breast, veal and a wonderful beef dish between our two adults and three kiddos. The wine list was solid with affordable and high end options. Dessert was classic and delicious- tiramisu and crème brûlée that were both amazing. And we had a lovely cheese course!
Service was excellent and we left satisfied and looking forward to our next visit.
This is a must for anyone looking for good food and as a unique a setting as we've ever found. We highly recommend it! read more
