Got the beef tacos and Coke for a whopping $6. They were amazing. I'll probably make this my regular lunch spot.

Kartchner's Grocery & Specialty Meats - Frozen crawfish and chicken boudin to take home

Because I don't want you to miss this little gem. Sure, you can find similar food along I-10 just about anywhere in Louisiana. So what makes this place stand out? The employees -- and some long-forgotten items you never thought you'd see again. Cracklins, pork AND chicken. Yes, I said chicken cracklins. A variety of boudin balls. And don't skip on what's in the frozen and refrigerated section either. Stop by if you can, and bring an ice chest. Oh, and please follow the speed limit! If you didn't get caught in Port Barre, you will definitely get caught in Krotz

With that being said, we live in Houston but had a cooler and ice packs with us so we took a chance and stocked up on some of their stuffed catfish and stuffed chicken breasts. We were able to keep it frozen until we arrived home. So far, everything we brought home that has been consumed has been delicious. Really good flavors in both the fish and chicken. We will definitely be back as we travel home through Louisiana. Bon appétit, y'all.

When he wrung it up on the register he charged me 32.95 per pound. When I questioned it, he yelled at the other person working there that they forgot to change the price card...and did not give me the displayed price. BAD BUSINESS. The guy was a real jerk about it...and there was nobody else in there...no wonder. Good luck keeping business if you keep acting like that...I'll never go back

Located just before the 17th St. Canal in Metairie, this new specialty foods store/butcher/seafood…read moremarket is a welcome addition to the city. The pantry offerings are relatively slim, but good. I purchased some cherry jelly that specifically is meant to be paired with cheese. There is also a supply of local produce. I grabbed a couple of onions and garlic and was wowed by some huge, beautiful Brussels sprouts. The proprietor recommended I shave them and add olive oil, honey, lemon juice, and pecorino followed by a brief refrigeration for a unique, fresh salad. I did, and my guests went gaga over it. The star of the show is the meat offerings. I did not procure any on this visit, but will be back for a stunning filet or ribeye. There is seafood, too-scallops, salmon, and sushi-grade tuna amongst other things. I bought a single premade crabcake and pan fried it at home for dinner. The best crabcake I've had outside of Dickie Brennan's. I'm racing because they deserve it.

While I'm not crazy about Bourgeois Meat Market's andouille sausage, which I have found to be a bit…read moretough, I enjoy their regular smoked sausage, and I'm a huge fan of their Cajun Smoked Tasso. For the uninitiated: Tasso is fast-cured, seasoned, and smoked pork shoulder. It's used in stews and simmered foods, softening as it cooks, adding a delicious, unique flavor and bite that's typical of many Southern Louisiana (read: Cajun) dishes. Tasso's difficult to describe, but you'll know it when you taste it. I just received four 1-lb. packages of tasso, shipped from Bourgeois' smokehouse in Gray, LA via FedEx 2Day. The order arrived in good shape, and though the ice packs surrounding the meats had melted, the tasso was smoked (and so, fully-cooked) and it was vacuum-sealed. It went straight into my freezer, and it'll be fine. The cost to ship from Lafourche Parish to San Diego doubled the price of the product, from $7.24/lb to around $15, but I pay that much (or more) for quality steaks and seafood, here at home, and it was my choice to spend top-dollar for meat that I know, from experience, will make my gumbo, red beans, etc. taste better than I could otherwise make them. Kudos to the folks at Bourgeois Meat Market for offering a high-quality product, and for handling the purchase and shipping in a professional manner. I like visiting their shop when I'm in the area, but I LOVE that they don't make me get on a plane to eat what they're cookin'!
