As the sea breeze blows over Brittany, I wonder why I've never written about French restaurants…read more Perhaps it's that strange combination of fame, perfectionism and grandeur. And possibly the other fame, too. But then, we find ourselves bordering winding rows of timbered houses to get to Rue des Dames. The tiny place risks being overlooked by passers-by, but, as its name suggests, it's number 2. Its restrained, rocky aspect feels just like being on a natural breakwater overlooking forever mesmeric waves. Ah, la mer ! Yes, I know that when embarking among sailors the journey will never be undercatered. But I'm hungry for good eats. Fortunately, neither of my co-dinners lacks appetite either. Not in the least. We dined on the evening menu, consisting of three choices per course. This being a marine ambiance, slowly we rejoiced on Cancale Oysters with Ciboulette, Cider Vinegar & Lemon Juice, and Crab & Apple Salad with Spinach Sauce - both carefully balanced in taste and texture. The highlight of the night: Sea Bass on Curry Sauce & Local Spices - definitely the great vedette of the table. But for those who aren't in a fish mood, Turkey "Sot l'y laisse" (literally, "foolish not to eat it") is the answer. This is an incredibly tender morsel nested between the thigh and the back. And this comes with wild rice and chorizo cream. Desserts came in like a platter of scintillating gifts. I went for Chocolate Dome on Soft Almond Crust, though with the slight skepticism of someone who is used to the finest Belgian chocolate. Big surprise, it was just like in Belgium. Well, almost ;-) The bill came to about 100€ (88£), reasonably priced for a three-course meal for three, including a bottle of dry white wine. As I settled the bill, Chef Julien - or Captain Moreau, should I say - came personally to check up on me. Such a fine, skilled young man, who pays a necessary and just homage to regional cuisine in Brittany.

I visited La Saint George's pre-pandemic while on a business trip to Rennes. I totally enjoyed myself and my meal. The atmosphere was classy for a crepe joint, but probably only average classy ... by French standards. La Saint George was busy on my visit and seemed like a place the locals visited frequently. The cuisine & menu is all about the crepes. The restaurant had French and English menus. My party of 2 Americans and 1 Canadian went for some crepes that were cheeseburger themed. There were cute names for all the crepes. We ordered some cider to go with our meal which was dry and delicious. We had salted caramel dessert crepes that were perfect. The service was exceptional, and the price and value received more than fair. I totally recommend La Saint George and would be happy to eat here again. Bon appetite.

Lots of velvet and funky lamps made this place seem like a nightclub/lounge better found in New York City, not in Rennes. I will admit, all of these things made me hesitate when I walked in. However, their selection of galettes was truly unique. This would be my last galette in Rennes, and I had to make it count. Enter Le Giorgio Armani. Four pieces of magret de canard topped with foie gras and a bit of caramelized apple. It was around 17€ and the most expensive thing on the menu. But it was well worth it. I couldn't believe I had four pieces of magret de canard in addition to foie gras. It was like I'd died and gone to heaven. It took me forever to eat because I couldn't stop "Mmmmm" ing and "ooooooh yummmmmm" ing. If you are looking to splurge, this is what you should get. The previous reviewer complained of dry, cold galettes. I didn't have the same experience at all. For dessert, I ordered a speculoos ice cream and Nutella crêpe. It came with a piece of hazelnut chocolate with a flag of Brittany sticking out of it (nice touch!). I loved the speculoos ice cream, but the Nutella crêpe was not particularly noteworthy. Or maybe my expectations were just too high after my galette. Don't come here unless you want something unusual. This was a perfect last crêperie for my time in France.

We had called ahead to make a reservation, but could not get through: the operator said the "service did not exist." Perhaps it had closed, we thought. Since we couldn't get a reservation, we decided to just head there and take our chances. I did not tell the maitre d' that we had cruised for a half hour looking for a parking spot, but we did. Using the Apple map program for directions is a challenge in a European town you don't know, in which the announcer's French is so bad you don't have a clue what street she's talking about. We ended up in a parking garage and walked about five blocks to get there. At any rate, the maitre d' was snooty and not at all helpful. So I can't talk about the food, but the attitude is more what I would have expected decades ago. Most French are aware that tourism is a major industry for their country and act accordingly. I speak French, so he did not have that excuse. I would give it a zero for that reason, but that would make it appear I hadn't given a rating.

The interior is a little strange - the furniture is beautiful and matches the beautiful outside of the restaurant, but some decorations and wall art seem a little out of place. Bathroom is on the second floor of a very windy staircase. I ordered the Ouef Mollet, Salmon Risotto with Fine Herbs, and Moelleux Chocolat. The starter was a soft boiled egg on top of mushrooms cooked in wine. The egg was runny and helped balance out the strong flavor of the mushrooms. They also give you a side of bread, which was perfect for soaking up the sauce. The main course salmon wasn't very seasoned (again, it's a French thing to under-season, apparently), but I liked that the skin was crispy and the flesh was soft and flaky. The risotto wasn't as creamy as I was hoping, but the fine herbs were very prominent. There was also a lemon cream sauce that encompassed the rice, which made a nice addition to the salmon. Portion size was also satisfactory. The moelleux chocolate came warm, but I know it was sitting out for a while before reaching my table, because the ice cream had melted significantly. The inside of the cake wasn't as fudgy as I would have liked, which was a real bummer because I've had really good moelleux chocolat during my time in Rennes. I found a piece of foil in my cake, and after telling the server, she said (not nicely or rudely, very matter-of-factly) "well, it's made in a foil cup so they can't help it" All in all, great food, good value for the price, and every dish that I saw other tables ordering looked delicious.

We were experimenting that day, so we tried a plate of frog legs (not my thing, but I had to do it once). I ordered the zander, and it was perfect. One of the best restaurants in Dinan and definitely one of our favorites in France so far. Came in on a Saturday night at 9pm without a reservation, and luckily we were seated in the last table available. The hostess was sweet, spoke English, and was extremely helpful regarding the menu and translations. Best yet, they were very casual about the menu -- anything can be ordered as a starter or as a main, and they're not sticklers to the rules about French dining that most restaurants seem to have. First, the amuse-bouche: whipped cucumber cream with oyster leaf -- a leaf that actually tastes like oysters! Different, and delicious. I'm not a huge fan of actual oysters, but I totally dig the leaf. Here's a pro tip: any time they offer scallops, order them! They were doing a special scallop menu, but I just had the scallops with risotto as a starter. Not kidding, I would have licked the plate clean. So amazing and perfectly cooked. For my main, I had the duck confit, which was served on a warm potato and bacon salad, and accompanied by mixed greens. The meat was amazingly tender and less fatty similar dishes I've had in the past. If I were in Dinan longer, I'd visit again. Thumbs up!
