I arrived and didn't realize I was in the right spot as there was no host stand when you walk past a heavy velvet curtain. Rather you're greeted immediately with tables and people dining. It was awkward as I walked out and a local walked me back in and announced to everyone that I thought I was lost. It have everyone quite the entertainment. Despite that welcome the food was amazing and super intricate. The food descriptions are simple yet three plates arrive for one course. People surrounding me were being served at least 8 to 12 courses and I was so full after my six. More than enough! Total bill with two glasses of wine was 150 euros. I would come back because the menu is super creative and imaginative, the food is delicious and actually filling, and only locals dine here!

The large restaurant can easily accommodate many patrons. Large roomy tables are perfect for those who don't want to feel claustrophobic. The menu is vast and in English (Angels singing). Best of all.. They had fois gras with a side scoop of sorbet... Strange but it worked! And the not so great.... The wait for the menu was 10 min. The wait to order was 15. The whole ordeal took over 2 hours. This was a bit long when you've got two young kids dining with you. The worst part? They charge 9€ for a bottle of Evian water. A bit steep in my opinion. They also have breakfast buffet here in the morning. Not the best but not so bad either. There are a variety of cheeses, breads, and meats. There's an omelette station, too. Monday guy was great but Sunday guy was a joke. I asked for an omelette...and then I returned a few minutes later... Had to repeat what I wanted and he said 10 min. 10 min later he said "10 minutes. " I go back 10 min later and he asked what I ordered! So I repeated it and he said "ahhhh it's right here" as he started throwing the ingredients in my omelette to one he was already cooking! And.... Classic French Bistro decor. And while I enjoyed the service, the table next to me insisted on ordering off-menu, rudely demanding "no fish." Fisch is just under half of the prixe-fixe menu. The server handled them easily and professionally. Of the plates, I did enjoy both the red mullet and the golden Trout with Trout skin chips. One of the more clever presentations was the 2nd amuse bouche: beef tartar with horseradish ice, over Vichysoisse and Trout caviar (photo). I initially thought it might have been a bit too much, but I was wrong - an excellent beginning of the meal. Also, I now believe that if the Chef makes the effort to present you with bacon mousse for your bread, it is your duty to eat it all. Brot und Butter does not compare to Brot und Speck. I'll return to Köln soon, and must return here. 2022 08 25. M1.

This was my second vist, the first nearly two years ago. From our greeting at the door to the handshakes goodbye, everyone made us feel welcome and very much at home. But, from the first bite of the chef's amuse to the last bit of dessert carefully scraped from the bottom of the plate, you knew you were not at home but in a culinary heaven! We all had the tasting menu, with one of our party having a vegetarian version. Each of our dishes were gorgeously prepared and presented, even the veg dishes looked the same. Every one of the courses was perfect but there were three that were even more perfect. The 'meat' dish was an Iberico fillet (never had a I. fillet before, only sliced) but this was so wonderfully smokey and meaty that I had to cut the two small pieces into even more tiny bites to make the pleasure linger. And the rustic Cote du Rhône that was recommended paired perfectly too! The pigeon was such a surprise to all: very tender, very "smooth", nicely chewy and delicious. And, at the end the 7 or 8 or 9 courses (five plus amuses) was dessert, a light, but not too light, sweet but not too sweet, mousse that was a milk chocolate colored but not so chocolatey tasting (nutella?) with a soft foam on top and sitting on a bed of passion fruit and 'clear' coffee flavored sauce - a marvelous finish! And I guess I should mention the 'fish' dish of small prawns that had been marinated, not cooked, with a soft sea foam and some fine, crisp fried shrimp pieces on top. A magical preparation. You will have guessed that I, and all five of us, loved this dinner. It was as fine of a dinner as I can remember (and I had been at Steirereck last May) at a small, intimate space without any hoopla. I cannot wait to go again.

The food is mostly pretty good, but... If you ever watched a 1960s movie involving a high-end hotel restaurant... this place tries to bring that back.  With dark wood paneling, fresh flowers, custom engraved flatware, dome-covered dishes, linen napkins with sewn button-hole, whisper quiet with no music despite main train station traffic visible through the windows. Unfortunately, the attempt is unsuccessful.  Several problems slowly emerge, starting with the black tape repairing the hole in the carpet almost in front of the main entrance. "That is such a small detail!" "No. There are no small details." The servers seemed competent, but I was there for lunch, with barely 20% occupancy. The food itself was not too bad, but minor problems bothered me - such as the dried "fresh" bread served with the meal.  Maybe I can remedy that using the salt and pepper shakers placed at each table. It is unfortunate that a restaurant with such an obvious rich history appears to have been squandered.  I'll visit again in a few years... maybe. 2024 03 25. M0.
