After taking a bite of a mantecado, I realized that I know this cookie well. It's basically the same as a Filipino polveron. Confitería Santa Lucía's mantecados are crumbly, sweet, and topped with a fine glaze of sugar. Every day in Spain has been an interesting history lesson in the origin of the familiar foodstuffs of my childhood. There was only one person working and the people in front of me were ordering lots of pastries for a party, so it was a bit of a wait. The counter person was a bit gruff. They have a few tables and chairs outside and the staff will come wait on you if you decide to eat outside. They have a very extensive menu of food and desserts. Many of the other customers were eating lunch, but we had come just for the desserts. It was a hot day, so we decided on some of the cold chocolate beverages. They were like chocolate slushies, but the chocolate was good chocolate, not fake kind. We also got some churros which are not like American churros. If you're American, do not expect Costco/Disneyland style churros that are coated with cinnamon sugar. Spanish churros are just deep fried dough, kind of like youtiao if you're familiar with Chinese food. They were served hot and crispy. When I had related what had taken place, he said that I had a nice meal and said that I should "leave him alone." Shocked, I politely asked for his name. He refused to give it, which is why I described him as portly and slightly scruffy because I have no other way to identify him. So if you are eating alone and perhaps even in a group, chances are not small that you will be treated with as much understanding and civility as I was. The food was good. The drink was good. The atmosphere was good. The servers were kind and helpful. The portly, scruffy, nameless "boss" thoroughly ruined what might have been a perfectly lovely evening.
