Both times we had the avocado salsa and every last thing was great. Our drinks were mediocre the first night, but on visit #2 we had some bomb cocktails (hers was Jamaica-based;'mine was Gin with blueberry juice ). Service and ambiance are cool. You can order a few dishes and serve a group, even the tacos are big, shareable, if messy. This afternoon I shared fat rice and tequenos with a friend. it was more than enough. We're both hardy eaters, and we didn't finish. The rice dishes are in a fried rice style, though slightly sweeter than what I usually eat. For the fat bastard they add chicharron glaseado, fried shrimp, grilled shrimp, octopus, avocado, broccoli, carrots and more. It's a full on fusion of flavor and ingredients. The spreadable fried avocado is an unexpected gift to pair with the fried shrimp, or with a bit of rice, sublime. If you order this, you're going to want to pair this with something to cut the fat, so try a coke zero, a sparkling water, or a beer. The restaurant is small-to medium, maybe 10-12 tables, so service is smooth and easy. You watch can even watch your food be cooked and plated. Waitstaff is attentive, but not overly so, still it's easy to get their attention and given the low number of tables, they take care of requests quickly. I have eaten in the restaurant a few times and just as many, if not more, delivery, and it is solid all the way around. The delivery is not going to be as good as in the restaurant, mostly for the texture loss with time in packaging. They do pack ingredients separately to keep as much as they can intact, and the flavor isn't lost on the road, just the crispness of the batter or the heat of the octopus, for example.

For a solid, healthy lunch, I enjoy their daily catch (check market price and fish) or tilapia. I usually get it grilled or zarandeado for some more flavor. It's easy to add on rice (white or saffron) and vegetables which you can have steamed or zarandeado, as well. Shrimp in its many forms (al ajillo, zarandeado, a la diabla, grilled) is also great here. The shrimp dishes come with saffron rice and nopales, but you can switch to vegetables easily. Their ceviche tostada is good as is their shrimp aguachile. Table service will include tostadas with a couple of salsas, and they'll provide more if you ask or have a long wait. Sometimes they'll start everyone off with a shooter of shrimp or fish soup. The broth is richly flavored, and the cup is often ridged with tajin which makes for a delicious starter. A friendly gift shop owner led us to La Jaiba and for this, I am so grateful. There are two sides to the restaurant, the seafood bar where you order you fish tacos, chile rellenos stuffed with fish and clam chowder. For everything else, order at the other side of the restaurant. The fish tacos were 80 cents a pop and they are extremely generous with the fillets of fish. The fish was silky, the batter light, crispy and well seasoned. The woman making the food behind the bar was extremely kind. The toppings are DIY: cabbage, pico de gallo and a variety of sauces and salsas. These were one of the best fish tacos I've ever had. Go crazy, you won't regret it. La Jaiba is not listed on any of blogs or articles written up about the recommended fish tacos spots in Ensenada, but it should be.
