We ordered an octopus and caracol ceviche plus a a few beers. Amazing, all of that for about 15$. Yup this place is the definition of Mexico, or at least how I choose to experience Mexico. Oh the service was fast, friendly and attentive, this ubiquitous for the region.

We came through mid-afternoon and we agreed to keep our orders as minimum as possible since we had a big family meet for dinner not too long after this stop. We were seated immediately. The first thing that caught my attention was the interior decor. There's so much to see in every nook and cranny. Their primary theme gives off the dia de los muertos vibe: the skeletons on the wall riding on bikes, one as a passenger of that side truck, even the paintings. They got creative! There is plenty to look at. It was hot and humid so Hubbers started of with a brewski. I went for their version of pina colada. Very refreshing, and the candied straw added to their creativity. Hubbers and I agreed to get one thing and one thing only: chicharron de rib eye. Now I know cooking rib eye well done is a huge no-no, but they managed to cook this almost to a mild crisp, and yet it was packed with flavor. The meat was on top of a very well-seasoned guac and wrap it all up with fresh tortilla and pickled onions and... WOW. It truly was the perfect merienda. Hubbers and I couldn't get enough. We didn't snarf it down or anything like that. We took our time and savored all its flavor and texture. YUM! (Yep. We ate it all! And we don't regret it either!) FOOD: 5. Solely for the rib eye chicharron. SERVICE: 4. Staff were friendly. Service was fast. VALUE: 3. Tourist price, but fair. PARKING: Street only. It'll be a challenge. OVERALL: 4. Hubbers was happy. As was I. We had a couple more drinks before bouncing out. We truly enjoyed that stop, albeit short. A definite repeat the next time we come visit Merida.

We ordered two traditional margaritas with ice and no salt. They were excellently made with a nice lime base. They brought two salsas and chips with our drink. I mentioned that I didn't like the food before the bill came and didn't eat it, but instead of trying to resolve the issue or communicate professionally, the staff became rude and dismissive. The situation was handled poorly, and comments were made that felt unnecessary and unprofessional rather than customer-focused. Overall, the service and attitude ruined the experience. First thing I noticed even while still outside is the number of staff/servers they had. I figured it out soon as Hubbers and I came in: this place is huge! Now... I've been on the hunt for kibis since I got to the Yucatan, so I was delighted to find they had it here. The only thing I was skeptical about is that they were stuffed. I would have much preferred it plain, but didn't wanna knock it without trying it. So, we put in an order for that. While waiting for our drinks, the mini side snacks ("las botanas") started coming through... and it was a lot: pasta with red sauce, ceviche, sliced hotdogs in some kind of creamy dressing, three types of rolls/taquitos with three types of sauces, chips and salsa, and surprise! Included were plain kibis. We tried to find our server to cancel the stuffed kibis and maybe order something else. But it was too late by the time he came back since he had already put the order in the kitchen. Why he didn't mention they were part of the snacks when we spoke about the stuffed ones earlier is beyond me. (No, there were no communication barriers. Hubbers speaks fluent Spanish.) I would have gotten a pizza instead, maybe... LAS BOTANAS: Yes, it was abundant. Yes, they all tasted different. However, all of them were plain. They were just "okay", nothing to call home about, and not one really stood out. And yes: that includes the kibis. The plain ones had very minimal flavor. The stuffing on their stuffed version overpowered the main essence of the kibis. So final verdict is: MEH. But they were generous, I'll give them that. FOOD: 3.5. 5 for quantity, 2 for quality. SERVICE: 3. VALUE: 3. PARKING: I might have noticed a parking lot behind the restaurant. Street parking is also available. OVERALL: 3. Fam met up with us a bit later, so the company elevated the experience a notch. It is a tourist spot so they're never wanting for customers. It certainly is the perfect location for it. Hubbers and fam talked this place up a storm, so it was a must have during our visit to Merida. So…read morethat was the original plan: to visit their Merida location but having a spot at the Progreso Malecon just simply made it very convenient. Hubbers and I came through maybe a little over an hour before closing time so there were plenty of seats and tables to choose from. We were given menus and what I appreciated immediately is that our server asked if we much prefer an English menu. Hubbers said he was fine but I certainly can use one. (I would have been fine without it, but it sure made ordering faster and easier!) We (literally) wanted to order practically everything, but common sense kicked in and decided to get a few apps, then decide whether we want mains or not after. They gave complimentary crispy tortillas and biscuits. Thankful for my refreshing and delicious pina colada because all these comp'd goodies did is made my mouth dry. The lime and sauces didn't help at all. This might just be their ploy of making us order more drinks. (I'll admit it worked.) But you know: don't knock it 'til you try it. One by one apps were getting to our table. TUNA CARPACCIO: The plate had so many things going on yet very well put together. It was a busy plate, for sure, but the fish was the absolute star of the plate. The vege added texture to the bite and the flavor of the sauce/marinade had a good blend. Avocado added creaminess to each bite. HALF DOZEN OYSTERS: I am incredibly skeptical about having oysters outside of the US, but Hubbers assured me they're safe to eat here. They tasted fresh, sure, but I found it kind of bizarre that the size of the oyster is not commensurate to the size of the shells. Delicious, otherwise. FRIED OCTOPUS: Hubbers loves octopus, so this was a must-have. This was well prepped. The seasoning on the thin batter was perfect and the octopus was tender. This dish didn't last very long on the table. We practically gobbled it all up. We liked it so much we thought about putting in a second order. We opted against it in the end. PICANA PIZZA WITH CHIMICHURRI: Okay, so I decided to get a main since I had a craving for pizza. Never had a picana pizza before, so there was no better time to try it. I didn't know what to expect, but since this place isn't a pizza joint, I didn't expect much. The crust was so thick that a fifth of the pie was JUST crust. There were slices of picana which tasted great. The amount of cheese was not overwhelming and the little vege it had surprisingly cleansed my palate, albeit a little. But the biggest challenge to this pizza was that they didn't slice it through and through to separate them triangle-shaped goodies. I was full after one slice, so I asked them to pack the rest up to take out. Offf, their packaging was less than stellar. (They literally and carelessly stuffed everything in a container - one can tell they just didn't care. And they still didn't bother separating the slices.) Hubbers decided on steak which he couldn't finish either since the apps were filling, but we're lucky to have a small kitchen (fridge included) in our hotel and had that and the pizza for a second meal. Hubbers also opted for dessert. I took a small bite. It was alright. SIL and her husband joined us later and put in a couple of starters and drinks. Salmon carpaccio (forgot to take a picture) is delicious as well. FOOD: 4.5 SERVICE: 4.5. Friendly and attentive staff, they make up for the minor gaffes. VALUE: 3. Pricey, but fair, especially for the location. Expect to pay the equivalent of US/American prices. PARKING: Not sure if they have their own parking lot, but there may be street parking at the back. OVERALL: 4. I'd have to try the Merida location first before I'd come back here, but overall better than average first run.
