I have been frequenting the Bistrot for over 6 years now, because it's just a stone's throw away from our family flat that we stay at every time I'm in Paris. Upon entering, it's a bar where locals come to drink and watch matches on the television. Towards the back is the restaurant, which evokes a very relaxing and homely atmosphere. The lighting is dimly lit, and various shades of red pervading the room. The bar and restaurant is frequented by the locals, and it's refreshing to not be surrounded by tourists. They offer an impressive menu full of hearty selections. It was here that I had merguez for the first time. For those not familiar, it's an amazing red, spicy sausage from North Africa. I encouraged Lumberjack to try it, because it's one of my favourites every time to come to Paris. The service is always friendly and welcoming. Between the two of us we shared lamb, merguez, couscous, and a variety of roasted vegetables. It's exactly what we needed after a full day of travelling. The meal was fresh, tasty, filling, and moderately priced. Overall, it's a good relaxing and tasty experience if you're in the neighbourhood.

It seems to be a local bar but the restaurant hidden behind the bar is absolutely a crown jewel. We ordered dusk breast and rib-eye steak; together we spent less than 28 euros. Both quality and prices are unbeatable. Steak is amazingly juicy and roast duck is served will plum sauce. I still can't find better duck breast prepared better elsewhere in the world. Mash potato is made from scratch with tons of flavors. Please see my picture posted with both dishes. Will come again for sure.

Bubar - A perfect solo evening at Bubar.

My 500th review, dedicated to Bubar... This bar is magical…read more There's just something about this spot where you know so much has happened within these 4 walls over years and years. I fell in love with it a couple of weeks ago during my first trip to Paris, where I ended up visiting it not once but twice. It's a dive wine bar, but with so much character, in every nook and cranny. I had read reviews on both TripAdvisor and Yelp, albeit dated. There is no name listed on doorway so could be hard to miss, but something about the red lighting and energy just drew me in. (That and some trusty reviews online...) The first night was a little intimidating at first. A group of older gentlemen, all friends and all seemed to know the owner, were deep into conversation at the bar. However, as soon as I walked in, solo, that very owner, Jean-Loup (he made sure I captured the correct spelling, vs. some renditions in other reviews ;)) warmly greeted and welcomed me. From there on, it was bliss. For me personally it was a pivotal moment because just a few days prior to that, I was still a bit fearful about exploring the city solo with very little grasp of French, but that night, I felt brave and wandered by Bubar. So glad I did. Jean-Loup not only nailed a few wines for me that were all sheer perfection (there's a daunting list but disregard that and just tell him what you're in the mood for because he'll find something spot-on), but offered a small plate of nibbles, after asking if I preferred 'fruits or vegetables'...a sweet, personal touch. I enjoyed a wonderful night just respectfully observing his interactions with his buddies (clearly he is very adored here, and a local staple,) while he checked in on me regularly to ensure I was doing fine. Such an amazing evening. The following night I had to stop by again just to say goodbye. I simply won't be forgetting Jean-Loup and Bubar anytime soon. For anyone reading this who will be venturing into the bar, he mentioned he is not the most tech-savvy but was happy to hear he has so many positive reviews, and that I wanted to write a review (as the last one was from a year ago)...please let him know "Jennifer from Los Angeles" said hello, and mention this review. :) He's the absolute best.

Not a lot of French wine if that's what you're looking for, but a lot of wine from his travels all over the world. Place looks like a shrine to his life and travels, filled with music, wine and various souvenirs. Wonderful time.
