What a refreshing change from all the heavy meat and potato dishes of the area. I also had a dish of "fleischkiechele," which were delicious grilled meatballs, served in a homemade pinot noir red wine sauce and with warm sauerkraut cooked with bacon bits! Every part of this meal was so balanced in flavor and delicious--what a great find!

I realized there was a restaurant behind and I was hungry--plus the Chocroute was about €10 less than the other fancy restaurants around; I was sold! It's not fancy by any means, and it's not all decked out in extravagant Christmas decor at all to catch your eye, but if you want a simple, no-frills meal and you have no high standards, this is a great place to grab a meal. I got the Choucroute 4 viandes (kassler, smoked breast, duck breast, and Strasbourg sausage). It was my first time having Choucroute and a real Alsatian meal (which is mostly German-inspired), so I can't really compare, but I thought it was wonderful. The meat cuts were fresh and juicy, and grilled perfectly; I felt like I was eating at 4-star restaurant. Eating this with sauerkraut and dijon mustard was a little foreign to me, since I don't eat German or French food, but nice to slather with the meats. They don't really speak English and the English menu wasn't translated so well, but was good enough for me to understand most of it.

Unfortunately I am allergic so we decided to sit inside. They have menus in German and English so just ask for an English menu if you need it. It is a little bit of a smaller menu but that was fine with us. We ordered dumplings with beef and various sauces and a pear. It was good, different but good. I was looking for different so this was fine with me. The flavor was good. We each also got a little free app with bread, pickle and some type of meat that was tasty. The staff was very nice. Paying the check was the hard part. They somehow double charged the amount of the bill to my sister. It was quite a Hassel to get it taken care of, taking about 20 minutes, a walk to the hotel next door and she still had to pay the fees on the full amount for the foreign transaction fee. Just pay cash!!!! Overall the food was good, the atmosphere is nice but I probably wouldn't return.

We then flagged out waiter and asked if we could dine inside which of course he said yes to. If you are like us and allergic and scared to death of bees opt for eating inside. We received our Beef with Dumplings and cream sauce. This was served with some kind of berry preserver and a pear. The dumplings were good decent but not what I was expecting. They were extremely heavy and lacking much flavor. The beef didn't have much flavor either so I mostly ate the dumpling and drenched it in the cream sauce and added some preserves. When we were finished I was brought the bill and I gave them my credit card. Big mistake. DO NOT PAY WITH A CARD. The lady had me go into the attached hotel with her where she ran my card. Unfortunately (for me) she doubled my bill. When I was supposed to be 35 Euros she charged me 75 Euros. Then she had to call the hotel manager for help and he had to reverse that charge and re-run my card. What was extremely unfortunate for me is that I had to pay the conversion fee still on the refunded amount and then again on the second card run. This lunch ended up costing me over 40 euros after the fees that I was incurred due to their error and also the money being taken from my account for almost 5 days while it was pending. Wow what a fantastic experience we ordered the onion soup as an appetizer to share, which was creamy and delicious with chunks of bread and lots of cheese on top. My husband ordered the Cordon Bleu. Which was nicely presented and had a generous filling with cheese and ham inside. I opted for the beef of the day which was a grilled flank steak served with potatoes and a salad. I am very picky about my beef and this was fantastic grilled to perfection, medium rare and absolutely fantastic. I rarely finish a meal, but I ate every bit of this and enjoyed every bite. We had a nice dry riesling to go along with our meal and ordered crème brûlée for dessert. The service was also incredible attentive, but not smothering. Annie was kind to us non-French speakers and provided a menu in English. I would suggest making a reservation in the evening, although we did not have to wait the place filled up as we were there for a couple hours. The ambience is very sweet and cozy. Not only is the restaurant beautiful, in an old wine cellar, but we had an amazing meal as well. My wife had the chicken and I had the pork cheeks. She said it was her favorite meal while in France. Everything else was good too, but the cheese was a major highlight for me. The waiter selected a sampling of cheeses for us from a huge cheese cart. I had the discovery menu (appetizer, fish, entree, dessert), 3-course wine pairing, coffee, and the restaurant's "extras" which included some very tasty amuse bouche at the beginning, small desserts with the coffee, and even a cookie to take a home.
