Before you roll your eyes thinking this will be one of my dismissive reviews, I want to confess Jamie W and I had satisfying bites here when we were seeking a lighter bite for lunch and a late night latte after barhopping. It's a spacious cafe on one of Sitges' main pedestrian arteries, Carrer Marques Montroig. Beyond the lure of terrace seating, it has the added convenience of being open from 8:30AM to midnight and 2AM on weekends. Their menu is quite broad with a focus on familiar comfort foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We came here to have salads, and they have them for 8,7€ each. Jamie had the Spinach which included jamon serrano, parmesan, and walnuts (Photo 9), while I went with the Caesar which had chicken and parmesan (Photo 8). They were both hearty portions well executed. We decided to indulge and have 2,2€ Cafe Leches (Photo 6) but not before sharing a big 6,2€ slice of Apple Pie served à la mode with vanilla ice cream, cinnamon, toffee, and whipped cream (Photo 7). They're locally known for the wide variety of their baked goods (Photo 2), so we just felt a need to have dessert. On another evening, we returned to satisfy our need for something decadent yet again. The breakfast menu is extensive with every kind of egg option, breakfast style and espresso coffee choice imaginable. You'll be sure to find something on the menu. I chose the English Breakfast one and it is a big breakfast. Imagine American Breakfast without hash browns but with baked beans and tomato slice. I just got the American the next time. Both were nothing special, just basic. Friends liked their cold cereal and fruit offerings. Service was off both times as the young servers didn't come by enough, forgot to bring requested items or even forgot orders. Food took forever to arrive, and not all at the same time. We were on holiday and really had nowhere to rush off to anyway.

There's a bit of a Frida Kahlo theme, she can be seen in the cushions and the colours on the walls in the garden. You have a tea menu, with so many to choose from, including, cream teas with, much missed by English visitors, homemade clotted cream. The cakes are locally made and there's even a vegan cake option. It overlooks the promenade and seafront and has a range of veggie and Vegan options on the menu including a 'Vegan Burger with Chips' which is lovely. Next time we go back we'll try the 'Vegan Goan Curry' which looks great. They have soy milk too and were happy to Vegan-ise drinks that were on the menu e.g. they made us a soy café frappé. The do have 'Vegan Chai Latte' listed too. When we last ate at Red Velvet it coincided with the Sitges Tapas Festival. Every participating cafe and restaurant in the town had submitted one tapas dish which could be purchased for a limited period. Hats off to Red Velvet for submitting the only Vegan entry! White and grisblue combined perfectly, the polished slate coloured concrete floor and the Eames chairs give the place a contemporary feel. The tables, counter and wooden balustrade add the 'rustic-ness'. It's very inviting. The restaurant has a small menu (which I think is how it's supposed to be) with vegetarian, gluten free and organic options. There are also dishes that change and are not on the menu. During our visit I've seen several orders for other guests pass by our table that caught my eye! The amuse bouche was very nice. Had one of the organic salads with red beetroot and as main course the chicken teriyaki. Both were very nice. Only thing for me was that the portion was a bit on the small size, partly probably because I didn't eat the rice due to my low carb diet. I was seriously considering having one of the dishes not on the menu: tower of grilled vegetables with a slice of goats cheese on top; it looked so nice every time it passed by our table (-: As a special treat I had a super nice chocolate chip cookie. The texture was just perfect! Extra nice as it was my only carb treat this month. For Sitges's sake I hope this was an empty boast as it was expensive and not particularly well done. The beans may have been Heinz but they were a bit dried out, I've no idea what they had done to the mushrooms but it wasn't good. The single slice of bacon and sausage were OK and the minute steak was quite tasty if out of place for breakfast. The staff's English was excellent and they even put on an episode of Buffy the vampire slayer for me to watch while I had my breakfast, but if you have a yearning for some British morning fare then I'd suggest you look somewhere else.
