The high ceilings and ornate sculptures with gold accents made me think I was in the Austrian embassy. Yet, while the atmosphere is fancy, the dishes were both high quality and reasonable. The menu showcases mostly salads, and elaborate ones at that: I chose a wild rice salad with cheese-stuffed peppers, artichokes, sesame-soy sauce and gazpacho on the side. My colleague ordered the plat du jour, an entrecote. Both he and I savored every bite! The rice salad was on the lighter side, yet had a rich array of flavors that blended together splendidly. We were tempted to try the dessert but, lacking time, we had to settle for a quick coffee before going back to work. Next time I'll come back on a sunny day to enjoy the courtyard terrace.

My French is not very great, but luckily the waiters here knew enough English where I could use my Frenglish and get by anyway. :) The waiter that served us was very friendly as well. I asked him what he recommended and he paused a moment and wrote something down on his notepad, saying "I know exactly what you'll order--it'll be a surprise!" Fantastic! Surprises are my favourite. :D Funny enough, I LOVED it! It was a cooked flank steak, incredibly juicy and it came with a salad and a dessert (the waiter also surprised me with his favourite: the berry crumble and it was great!). The steak was nice and pink and came out hot and rested (after you cook red meats, or even chicken, it's good to let the meat rest so the juices can return) and it was perfectly seasoned. The berry crumble was toasty and wonderful--the berries weren't overdone and the crumble was perfectly sweet, and not overly so. The atmosphere was wonderful because L'Ebouillante is nestled in a cosy alley with a view of the river. The light comes in just right in the late afternoon/early evening. I highly recommend asking to be seated outside--it's wonderful! Because it is in Paris and so many travel-writers have reviewed it, there are a good amount of tourists here from all over the world, but don't let that get you down! I ordered stumbling through my bad French, and a really kind woman sitting next to me, helped the waitress understand what my order was, which was so kind. Totally unexpected to have such a fantastic experience, but this is a dish that I now re-created at home because I loved it so much!
