TL;DR/The Short Version: One of the few department stores left in Montreal. I like the pretty displays and the large selection of products. The Long Version: Full Disclosure: my rating is heavily influenced by nostalgia. I love The Bay (called La Baie in the province of Quebec). It's a Canadian department store. To be accurate, it was called The Bay from 1965-2013 (La Baie in Quebec 1972-2013). In 2013 they rebranded to Hudson's Bay/Baie d'Hudson, which I suppose brings it back to the original name of it's first store in 1881 (in Winnipeg, not this one in Montreal) which had the same name as its parent company: The Hudson's Bay Company. However, in my heart it will always be The Bay. When they rebranded, they dropped the stylized B and the yellow script for a more block letter logo in black. The stylized B in yellow script is the logo of The Bay from my childhood, so I'm so happy that this La Baie location in downtown Montreal has retained it. This location has a Coach store inside it and was where I bought my first Coach bag so many moons ago (my first bag that cost more than $30, lol). This location has also been the site of FAO Schwartz pop-up stores, where Canadians can get items from the legendary American toy store. Growing up there were so many department stores, but the likes of Eaton's and Simpsons have long closed. So I'm happy that The Bay is still around. Their regular prices are quite high, but they often have sales where their items are marked down. Those of a certain vintage will remember "The Bay Scratch and Save Days" where they gave out scratch cards (like the scratch lottery cards, lol) and you could get 10%-50% off your purchase. If you are sensitive to scents, you may want to skip their fragrances section on the main floor. Walking through is very much like those typical scenes in movies of department stores where beauty counter workers spray perfume on customers, although they don't spray it directly on you like in the movies, they spray strips of paper and give them customers. Went to La Baie to look for some perfumes for my nieces...the cosmetics department is huge....so many options, so many choices. La Baie is probably the largest department store in downtown Montreal and at night is nicely lit up. Hudson's Bay (French: La Baie d'Hudson) is a Canadian luxury goods department store chain. It is the flagship brand of the Hudson's Bay Company, the oldest and longest-surviving company in North America as well as one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the World. Founded on 2 May 1670, the Hudson's Bay Company opened its first department store in 1881 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The chain operated under the company name before being rebranded to The Bay in 1965. As of August 2021, Hudson's Bay operates 86 locations in seven Canadian provinces. The full-line department stores focus on high-end fashion apparel, accessories, and home goods; flagship stores carry a bigger range and selection of goods than typical locations. The flagship stores are often multi-story, historic buildings and are located in Canada's largest cities (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa). This is a multi floor store. Like the one back home in Vancouver, the first floor is the cosmetic and perfume section. I came here looking for a swimsuits to use at the hotel pool. The Bay is always nice with the discounts and etc. I ended up grabbing a Nike branded swimsuit for $50. It was definitely good quality for the price. I liked how shopping in Montreal gives shopping bags for free. Very convenient if you want to buy more than one thing. Service was friendly. You do need to approach staff if you have questions etc. read more

Jamais vu un service de livraison et à la clientèle aussi pitoyable. The Baie is a huge department store; my favorite counter is Kiehl's. As girls, we know very well the skincare is very important routine in our lives. I went through many many skincare products till I was introduced to Kiehl's last year. I am in love. At the Baie, Loretta who is specialist of Kiehl's counter. She tested my skin, and recommended from face wash to serum to eye cream... and since last year, my skin has been breathing comfortably. Today, I had a full fledged facial by Loretta and my face feels soft as a baby's bum. Love it. I also found out today, Loretta who is responsible of her Kiehl's counter can have a girls' facial day (3-4 girls) and she can even ask one of the makeup department to come over to do a makeover. Overall, I love the Kiehl's counter, and I like this department store, especially when the sales start; they have a great deals if use you HBC MasterCard and the points card. read more

I selected 1 to 2 days delivery on Tuesday May 2nd because my wife's birthday was Friday May 6. Current estimated delivery date is May 9th!?! I contacted client services. French services is not operational (the automated system hanged up 3 times on me). By selecting english, their system knew about my order (related to my phone number). I shop here often, The Bay has a huge selection of everything you may need. They have some good deals, it depends on what day you go on and when they have sales. I've gotten many good brand items for a bargain. It's not all great however, the staff is never around to help, it's not always well organized and clean, they always try to get you to sign up for the credit card, and the list goes on. If it wasn't for those special days when they are on sale, I probably wouldn't shop here as much. You should also check out the outlets in Mirabel. They don't have as much variety but the deals are better on shoes, clothes, and accessories. My personal favourite is Topshop on the second floor. read more

Still shopping for my boy/man, I discovered that The Bay has excellent clothing options. Purchased $150.00 worth of statement, outstanding design(er) socks for a decent price. You know... two for one, three for one, four for one... or whatever... who cares. Now he has 200 pairs of socks that will all stand out in the wash, and if he loses one... he cannot match it to another, because they are ALL different designs. Lord & Taylor is my favorite store in NYC so it's only natural that I would like The Bay since they are part of the same company. Came here just to buy a pair of boxer shorts but ended up getting some more shorts and a great shirt. The men's department was great except for the fact that nobody seemed to work there. However, once I found a service desk with a human at it to ring me up, I was good to go. Great location, great prices, wonderful merchandise...I liked it here. read more

La Baie (or The Bay) is the last large multi-floor department store that is still around in downtown Montreal from my younger days. Back then, there used to be The Bay, Eatons, and Simpsons and now, out of those 3 big department stores, only La Baie (The Bay) still exists. We used to do a lot of shopping in The Bay back then but nowadays, I will only go there when I am downtown and want to buy some name brand clothes or a nice not too expensive but not too inexpensive piece of jewelry. In this recent trip, I wanted to buy a Canadian Olympic Team Tuque and perhaps the matching mittens. I went there during my lunch and the store wasn't too busy or crowded. When I went in, I walked close to the escalators where I looked for information on which floor I could find the items I wanted. They were on the 7th floor. I took the escalators to the 7th floor and one thing about the escalators is that after going up a few floors, I sort of lost track of the floor I was on and they didn't have the floor number in what I thought was a noticeable spot (on the floor at the top of the escalator). They had a small sign on at least one of the floors on a pillar near the escalators. A far better place in my opinion would have been to have the number on the floor at the top of the escalators. When I reached the 7th floor, I quickly saw the Olympic tuque that I wanted. I saw the matching Olympic mittens so I decided to get them as well. I went to line up to pay for the tuque and mittens and the cashier went to do something else at the time that I went to the cash. Some shoppers also lined up behind me. She then came back and asked me why the other cashier didn't serve me and I told her that the other person behind the cash left a few seconds after she did. She apologized for this and mentioned that she thought that the other cashier would take care of my purchase and even though I had stepped out of the line and was no longer in the front of the line, she told me that I could go to the front of the line (which I did) and paid for my purchase. Somewhat surprised for a department store as large as La Baie but it appears as if the entire store is covered by free WiFi (at least in the area of the store that I visited while I was going up the escalators and on the 7th floor). I would give La Baie / The Bay 3.5 stars which like my other reviews, I've rounded up to 4 stars as to not shortchange the company. read more

This is a veritable Canadian institution and with good reason. The Hudson Bay Company is inextricably linked with the founding of Canada and their Board of Directors, past and present, is a who's who of Canadian establishment types. I think I once heard Prince Charles of England is also on the Board but I'm not sure. Many people my age don't really shop the Bay because we kind of associate it as a "Mom store", meaning mostly home appliances, perfume counters and unhip clothing. Boy, are you wrong if you think that! Their women's boutiques upstairs carry big name brands like Theory, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Moschino, Pink Tartan, JBrand jeans, Paige denim, Adriano Goldschmied jeans and many, many others. The shoe department carries Hunter, Michael Kors, Steve Madden, Nine West and dozens others. Their kitchen appliances section is also worth a visit. Besides a wall of KitchenAid stand mixers in every imaginable color, they also carry funky items from Denmark's Bodum company and Italian design company, SMEG. Their Boxing-Day sales are insane, you'll find many designer items deeply discounted and the line-ups at the shoe department alone are beyond crazy. I've picked up items like a funky orange Bodum portable charcoal BBQ, a KitchenAid food processor, Theory sweaters, Lords and Taylor's merino wool cardigans, Steve Madden leopard-print sneakers and many other items over the years during their sales. I always do my research online first. They have everything posted online and you can even create sales alerts in case something you are eyeing goes on sale, you'll receive an email alert. The Bay also have random sales quite often, like a one-day shoe sale where everything is suddenly 50% off. Or a Kitchen Appliance sale where stand mixers which originally go for over $400 are suddenly $200. So it is definitely worth it to keep your eyes open. read more

I only ended up here because I needed to buy a pair of swimming trunks (having left mine back in New York, not planning to use them...but plans change). prices were on par with what I'd expect back in New York at a Macy's or JC Penney's or such. friendly and quick service. in contrast to the stores at home, though, it was very neat and organized. read more

On July 19, I bought a carte cadeau for my husband, which never was ship it, after a week of waiting, I called customer service, and an agent informed me that my order didn't went through. He recommended me to do another one, with the commitment that he would cancel the previous one. After more than one month I am still waiting for the refund which has not been made. Since they redesigned and renovated some sections, noticeably, the main floor, The Bay is a lot more edgy and luxurious. I used to view The Bay and Sears kind of at par, typical department store, more reserved for a mature clientele. I never saw teens going there. However, The Bay has really redefined itself. Their best move was the opening of a Coach boutique within the store itself. Previously, you could only find Coach products in limited range at Holt Renfrew. They carry many designer hand bags and brands that are hard to find anywhere else. Kipling is one of my favorites, widely popular in Europe and Asia, but seems like they're exclusive to The Bay here. You can find pretty much anything for anyone at The Bay, I find it's a great place for gifts and especially like their Olympic wear collection you'll find on the top floor. Shopping here on Boxing day is also worth it, lots of kitchen or bedding items at greatly reduced prices. read more

What sold me was that their bathroom has toilet seat covers! It may not be a big deal to you but after using multiple bathrooms in Canada without thus amenity, this is a god send! I was given a gift card for $100. When I went to use it, the cashier told me it was expired. I contacted customer support who told me store policy says that they now keep my hundred dollars. I have my own policy. You steal money from people, you never see my business again. Somebody paid $100 for a gift certificate. And they decide that it has an expiration date, and that they are entitled to keep the entire amount. It is absolutely disgusting and they should be ashamed of themselves. read more

The Bay is no ordinary department store, it is an important part of Canada's history. It was founded way back in 1670 and still exists today though it has undergone many changes over the years. In its early days it was linked to the fur trade and exploration of the country however it has since morphed into a department store which everyone knows. This particular store is the largest one in Montreal and I guess you could consider it the city's flagship location. The brands that each location carries can vary but this particular one carries the higher-end names (BCBG, Armani Jeans, etc) so it can be expensive but sometimes you get lucky and find something on sale. Either way the selection is huge and I often find myself having to exercise great restraint not to buy everything I like. They also have an excellent kitchen section which like the clothing one has a lot of higher end brands such as Le Creuset. Whenever I am in need of something new The Bay is always my first stop. The store has it all and I have to exercise self-restraint when I come here to shop because I can easily give my credit card a workout if I'm not careful. They have an awesome selection of goods and you can easily find everything you need in one trip to the store. read more

One of the nicest department stores in all of Montreal, and certainly, one of two most traditional (along with Ogilvy's). This is a wonderful store with many high-end, designer names and sub-sections. My teen and I got complimentary make-overs at the Chanel counter this past summer, when a who's-who of Chanel make-up artists from all over Canada came to Montreal for a conference and a make-up event at this store's Chanel department. What a treat! It was an hour-long, too, and they introduced many new products not yet on the shelves. This is the kind of event that this Bay holds. The lady at the Armani counter is super nice and will let you know of future bonuses, and like all the brand cosmetic employees, she really knew her line and was very skilled at make-up application (and they're all happy to help show and teach you, with no pressure to buy. At least, that was our experience, and we've been at this store often). The section with the Hudson Bay merchandise was and is my favorite. I love the history of this store; it pretty much tells the history of Canada. I love the Hudson Bay Company blanket and its tell-tale traditional stripes of black, yellow, red and green. I've gotten work-out shirts and winter mittens and toques and scarves and a book and a cell phone case with this traditional "blanket" stripe motif. Usually the prices of these items are all quite high, as the quality is top-notch, but there are great sales to be found if you time it right (and have a bit of luck on your side!). The only one downside was an experience my kid and I had at the Michael Kors make-up area, where one woman told us that they were having a "buy one, get one free" special, and if we bought a MK bronzer (which she said came with a nice brush, which she showed us), then we could get another bronzer and brush free. My kid and I discussed which shades of bronzer we each should have while this lady went to chat with another employee at another counter, and 5-10 minutes later, when we had decided what we wanted, there was no one around to help us. We looked and looked but there was no one except two other employees nearby, engrossed in conversation with each other. After another 5 minutes, I went and asked if either of them could help us. They said of course and one came to the MK counter and then said, no, the brush does not come with the bronzer. If you buy a brush, you can get another brush free (and it wasn't cheap, either!), or if you bought a bronzer, you can get another bronzer free. Needless to say, we weren't very happy with this discrepancy in information, nor about the 20 minutes we wasted at this counter, discussing what we'd be buying (as it turned out, without the brush being included, we opted not to get the bronzers at all) . Very disappointed in their customer service. Particularly the customer service at the MAC cosmetics counter. I purchased a MAC lipstick online from thebay.com on Black Friday. I was really happy because they offered 10% off all cosmetics. When I received it, I realized that the colour was not to my liking, and having purchased from the Bay's online store before I assumed there would be no problem to exchange the lipstick for another colour in the store. I was wrong. I went to the MAC counter with my bill and the unused product and asked for an exchange. The sales person informed me that she could do the exchange, but she had to charge me the full price, because the 10% off was only for the Black Friday weekend. I was a but upset, having worked in retail myself I know that for an exchange for the exact same item, usually a store will process it. When I told the sales person that I wanted to return it, since I won't be able to get the 10% off anymore, without even consulting a fellow sales person, she told me that she'll do ab exchange after all. So she did it and I got the colour I wanted but I did not appreciate the fact that she tried to pull a "fast one" on my to try to make an extra $2. Only upon realizing that she would lose $18 if i refunded it, she decided that she will exchange the colour for me. This is awful customer service. I did not appreciate it at all, and as a result I refuse to shop at any makeup counter at the bay. There are other great stores with better customer service such as sephora, holt renfrew, Sears, etc. The sales person trying to gain $2 for her counter had resulted in the loss of a customer for this company. Similar to most of the other The Bay's I've been too, this one is no different - plenty of makeup counters, shoes, and luxury handbag stores on the ground floor, floors on floors of clothing - some simple, some upscale, limited staff, untidy racks. Likely because there are so many floors to this The Bay, even on the weekends, it is very empty and quiet. Price point is generally high, as most of the brands it houses are upscale, high quality brands. Especially on the higher floors, it was very, very difficult to find a change room or cashier or staff for assistance at all, so you're on your own! read more

I absolutely love this location of the Hudson's Bay. Growing up in suburban Toronto the Bay was a staple of my mother's shopping routine. But even I now have come to love the Bay--especially the downtown flagship locations. The Queen Street store in Toronto and this one here in Montreal have recently undergone extensive renovations to their fashion collections--namely women's fashion but also men's with the introduction of more fabulous new designers and collections. This push 'upscale' has been tremendously successful for the company and there are now plans to further renovate the rest of the chain's 91 stores (especially those located in the city 'core' of our nation's cities). The Bay features everything from fashion--designer and middle of the road type stuff--to home decor, small and large appliances, electronics, seasonal decor, etc. Typical department store fare. The perfume selection is enormous and the salespeople have been more than helpful when I have been looking for something new to spice up my already extensive collection of fragrances. I particularly love their HUGE Christmas decor section located on the top floor (from about mid-October-onwards). If you are living in Montreal or just visiting there is literally no where better to grab some great festive decor! Fab!! Oliver and Bonacini (a great restaurant company based out of Toronto) just opened a fabulous new restaurant at the Queen Street store in Toronto and I hope that Montreal is next on their list. The upstairs 'cafe' is really really really dated with such limited options. Montreal would do so well with a little cafe along the lines of the Toronto one, where they serve 'Canadian comfort food.' Are you listening Bonnie Brooks (CEO)? we need a similar arrangement for us Montrealers! If you are a tourist, or a fan of Canadiana stuff I would also highly recommend a visit to the 'Hudson's Bay Collection' store in store. They sell the infamous point blankets, and other HBC-branded merchandise. LOVE this stuff. My apartment is 'Canadiana' themed and I bought a few mugs, candles, and throws for my place that really adds to the overall feeling. I hope they keep expanding this collection, really high-quality stuff. ALSO. Sign-up for a Bay card. I know, I know. Finance 101: never get a retail store card. BUT the Bay card exclusives are awesome! They send me coupons all the time (like additional 20% off regular, sale, and clearance pried merchandise)! Just pay off the card every month and don't incur any fees, interest, etc. Plus you get double HBC Reward points which I have been able to redeem for gift cards, etc. Totally worth it!!! They often have these deals every other weekend! If any big wigs down at HBC HQ are reading this: keep up the great work! Ugh. Not a fan of department stores, and THIS one will not be the one to change my mind. Every thing I've seen is so dated, from the clothing to the "home fashions" as they labeled it. I'm not one to be a pro at rating department stores, but good grief, they make Target look like a high end shopping experience. Bought 4 pieces of large luggage here, spent way too much, but it was last minute and nearby. Shame on me. I know. This review is for the photo studio. Photo studio = 1 star. Don't go there. Don't waste your time. If you do, you will be rewarded with mediocre product and false promises. The studio really is meant for toddlers and baby pictures for families wanting to document every growth milestone of their infants. It is really not for anything else. The photographers are SO mediocre. Honestly, I could do better using the timer on a digital camera at home. There is this annoying guy who works there who totally monopolizes the photo selection session. He has his own ridiculous tastes regarding what HE thinks looks good. Which is crap, in my opinion. He has an eye for trying to get you to pick the poses that make you look the most fat and unappealing. Then to top it off, he had the nerve to promise that I would get all the photos on the CD afterwards, at no extra charge. So, weeks later, I go pick up my order. The 're-touched' picture still has shine all over. Thinking that I could find something on the CD at home and re-touch it myself with online software, I opened it up and found... just one lousy picture. Totally fake promises. You know, if you are not going to follow through on your crappy promises, just don't even open your mouth and make them. Every time I step into the Bay I get in a bad mood, so it is not worth it to me to go over there again, all the way up to the 5th floor, and complain. I don't want to wait in that room full of screaming kids waiting for their turn, and I don't want to deal with that annoying guy that works there. Also, I know there is no point to phone them, because they never answer their telephone. I might as well review the rest of this place, adding in my 2 cents. The rest of the Bay = 2 stars. They redid the 2nd floor clothing section. The 2nd floor is full of overpriced stuff you can get for a fraction of the price in the USA, and full of shoes that are so so but never available in my size (which is quite average, not teeny tiny, or big-foot). There is Top Shop there, which is really blah garbage, Zara and H&M are better even. Then the bag section. They tried to make it more 'high class.' Some people think adding Coach in here is a step up. Coach is okay, but it is not really that amazing. Then of course they have the masses of Macy's style bags by Guess and Nine West that look mall-kiosk quality. There are some okay Zac Posen bags, but most of them are all finger-print full and scratched up. Make sure you ask the store people to find a new one in a drawer if you want anything in the bag section. Just go to the states to buy a bag, or online and have it shipped to someone in the states. You'll get nicer stuff for a nicer price. Yes, the Bay has nice Bay items that are great for tourists and great Canadiana souvenirs like wooly mittens. Yes, you can buy pillows there if you need. Yes, there are the basic appliances for sale. Etc. But for clothes, shoes, bags and photo service, don't expect miracles. Especially the photo service. Give independent photographers a chance, or do it yourself when getting your beauty shots for your model portfolio. ;) read more

I have been shopping here for years with mixed feelings and success I would say. There is always random sales here, it feels every time you walk in the store there is a huge sale going so I don't bother buying anything without a least 30% off... There is a good selection for men's clothe, I don't like their store home brands though. Some departments seem to be doing well like clothe, perfume and kitchenware while others seem to struggle like the furniture / appliances which really are over priced with no competitive edge and just taking up space. There is actually even a coin/stamp collection shop... It seems like the top 3 floors are just there for no reason... Anyways its the Montreal flagship store, its nice to get lost in there on the countless floors once in a while but not always walking out with purchases... read more

department stores are always awful spaces to be in, BUT, there IS something that changes a bit during the madness of the holiday rush, like the mania of our commodity/consumer culture reveals itself in a particularly fascinating way... the emphasis on the DISPLAY takes on new urgency and obsession during december. I had kind of a great time just people watching as i tagged along behind my brother who was looking for a necklace for his gf. Call it a sick fascination, but i actually like being in the thick of the spectacle for the holidays... so, even though i bought nothing, i did have kind of a fun 25 minutes skulking around the multi-level store. I will also add, that this particular Bay has the most enormous and endless perfume section I've even experienced... each of the aisles in the near-infinite procession of stocked smells is equally attended by some charming model-esque figure who is only too eager to spritz some Cher-endorsed stink in your face... hellish yet hypnotic! read more

Without a doubt, the nicest shopping experience for me. The Men's section takes up the entire basement and there are many things you can't find at other locations. The first floor is swarming with cosmetics peoples. The upper floors are very quiet, the Bay's prices are not always the best, and the offerings don't match with the tiny apartments people live in here downtown. It would be such a shame if this place shuts down, I try to encourage it as much as I can for the clothing and shoes. read more

La Baie or The Bay is the most famous Canadian department store...and the oldest. I guess it can be considered similar to Macy's. To me this is a standard department store. They have the usual merchandise and they also have a small section of Canadian souvenirs. When I was last here in February 2019 they were having a big sale. I was able to get a few pairs of very soft women's socks, slippers, and some washcloths with the traditional La Baie stripes on them all for under $25 CAD. The store was very neat and the WiFi worked throughout. If you are looking for a place to shop around I recommend. They are somewhat expensive I guess but if you catch them when they have a sale you can score some good finds. read more

I was so disappointed with this store, they removed completely Customer Service. So if you walk in there and buy something, they will be nice. If you look for customer service to help you out, its horrible. I bought a watch and lost my receipt, I went back there to ask for a copy of my receipt to send my watch for warranty. They refused to do that with a very rude attitude, the ladies at the watch section only focus on serving the customers that want to buy. I called online customer service, they told me go to the store, I went back there, got refused again. And the thing is, if you have THEIR credit card, they will reprint the receipt for you!!! I know, losing the receipt is my bad, but come on, with all the Online shopping technologies and their answer is they dont have my receipt in their Database??!! Plus, their employees speak so badly English (mid-age, or older ladies in the watch section). Never shop there again, cant wait to see this store goes bankrupt due to their serving attitude!!! read more

About the men's suits department (ties, suits, shirts...) My partner needed new trousers and shirts for work, so we went downstairs, in the men section, where all the chic suits are sold. Service was non-existent. We were looking for slim fit shirts and they were scattered all around the department. We asked an associate; while very nice, she had no clue where they were and was looking for them just as us. Self-service all the way in a pricey department. "Where do we put the shirts that didn't fit?" I asked; "a tall employee pointed the far end of the department and told me, as if I was a colleague: "Bring them to the girls out there", and disappeared...no one there, so I just dropped everything on an empty counter. Very frustrating. More frustrating is this tall employee happily told his colleagues that "he was serving us"! So the other ones were avoiding us...as well! I had to come back a week later to pick-up our altered trousers. An associate asked me, all sweet with a big smile, if I needed anything else in the store. As I said no thank you, he looked elsewhere, took the two pairs of trousers we had bought and dropped them at the bottom of a small bag, still on their hangers, ready to get crushed big time. And no thank you, no goodbye, he left hastily to find another customer. Funny thing is that I was arriving from another store where they had handed me other altered trousers hanging flat on their hangers, carefully protected with a bag. As I didn't want to have to press the new trousers once at home, I came back and asked that he'd cover the trousers the same way as in the other store. That clearly annoyed him. We did not feel welcome in that store, at all. Only our money was. We will not go back. read more
