Taverna di San Giuseppe is a very well oiled machine. Reservations are a must (recommend booking…read morethrough your hotel/walking in and requesting a reservation for next day) but the atmosphere is well worth it. Every server is serving you and the owners are incredibly attentive. Meals are stepped out in a way that has you receiving each dish with ample time to enjoy. The tiramisu was to die for and the invitation to explore the wine cellar afterwards was a treat. Well worth it!!

We ended up here by mistake (confused it with another spot), and unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. The restaurant fills up with reservations for two seatings, and from the moment we sat down the pace felt rushed. We ordered drinks and a starter while deciding on the rest, but multiple staff members kept coming by trying to take our full order. It felt like they were pushing to move things along quickly. There were a couple positives. The chicken livers to start were quite tasty and something we didn't see often on other menus. The primi were underwhelming. The pasta didn't taste fresh like many other trattorias in Siena, and the dishes overall were just average. The lasagna in particular was mushy, and the sauces didn't stand out. The secondi were slightly better -- pork ribs, Barolo-braised beef, and a "small chicken" -- but still nothing that justified the higher prices. They do have an underground wine cellar built into a cave, which is interesting to see, but there are other places in Siena with much larger and more impressive cellar spaces. Also worth noting, they add a "10% tax" charge rather than the typical €2 coperto per person. Overall, a rushed and fairly mediocre meal at a higher price point. With so many better places to eat in Siena, this is one I'd skip.

Our trip to Siena meant Florentine Steak for dinner. Tuscany region is know for this specialty…read more Our problem was where to go! We Yelped a place in Siena but since the race was to be run on the weekend the sides of beef had not arrived everywhere. The first place we stopped guided us to Il Grillo Moro, it is their main item and only take reservations. They were gracious to call ahead for us and reserve as table. We were on our way. 25 min later in the Tuscan countryside, we arrived. The manager of the restaurant set the tone for the night, with his wonderful warm charm and delightful tone. He sat us at the "best table for us". We started with some great wine and "anti pasta ". Beef carpaccio, wild boar cold cut plate and fried ricotta zucchini flowers. Every item was pleasing to the eye and the taste, well, I'm not sure words can articulate the right senses it overwhelmed. Carpaccio was lite and perfectly seasoned. Boar plate provided many sensations and textures. The flowers were delightful. Just enough of everything to allow flavors to be tasted and enjoyed. There was no question what was next. As we sat there and watched steaks make there way to other tables, we knew our future. 2 steaks were on the ticket. The brought out the cuts prior to the cooking. Oh my. A short period later, they arrived. Served with roasted potatoes that included garlic and rosemary. After 5 min, the kids were asking to place an order for two more. The first order was close to 7lbs of steaks! We let them allow the first ones to settle and went to dessert. That was reserved for panna cotta and a version of hazelnut ice cream. Both had a nice layer of chocolate to enhance their individual flavors. Il Grillo Moro should be on the list to anyone traveling around the Siena area. You won't go wrong! Don't forget to get a reservation, otherwise you may be eating at 10pm and miss one of the best steaks you will ever have.
