It wouldn't be a trip to Bordeaux without stopping at a wine shop to buy some of the local product especially since not all of the wine châteaux have an on-site retail outlet. Located in the heart of Bordeaux just around the corner from the Grand Théâtre and a short walk to many of the city's hotels, L'Intendant de l'Hôtel des Vins was exactly what the doctor ordered in terms of a wine shop. I don't know if they carried any non-French wines (I wasn't looking for them), but they had a solid selection of French wines, specifically Bordeaux, that appealed to wine lovers of all price ranges. Wine quality and prices increased as you walked up the spiral stairs up to each of the four (?) levels. At the top, the First Growth Grand Cru Classé wines of multiple of vintages were found. Needless to say, the wife and I found a couple of bottles closer to the ground floor that appealed to us and tasted amazing. The staff was friendly, helpful, and spoke much better English than we spoke French. L'Intendant de l'Hôtel des Vins was a definite gem of a wine shop. read more
