We were so lucky to have a private tour of this charming Chateau in the heart of Saint Emilion where we engaged in philosophical discussion on life and the correlation to wine making. Our only regret was not going back for a second tour for even just the discussions on life and wine but also not importing more wine as it was easily the best we tasted in this region. Till we meet again Bri and Pawel.

Expect to spend about an hour for the tour and tasting and you will have an opportunity to buy wine (cash only for a bottle or two), credit cards accepted for larger orders. He can ship wine to the states for you for around 150€ a case (you can get a much better deal on shipping if you go to one of the many wine shops located throughout the city). Most of the wines available can be aged for 10-100 years with the top vintages being 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010. Prices are in the 38€ - 50€ range. If you want to meet a passionate French wine maker, call ahead for a tour/tasting. Cost is 10€ per person and a delightful experience.

Let me guess, the Vin Expo? Indeed it was according to our winery tour guide that afternoon. Both wineries we've visited earlier that day were also preparing for the Vin Expo like mad. Everyone in our group loved our guide. She was so bubbly and super nice. She had spent some time in Sonoma to earn a certificate for her wine studies, so she spoke English very well. We settled on doing a half-hour tour and tasting for 7€ with her. She took us outside and proceeded to describe the history of the vineyards, the Chateau and their current owner, who is incidentally an American banker. She showed us the vineyards, the chais and other parts of the winery. We ended the tour at the boutique where we tasted a couple of wines. The winery produces Grand Cru Classé wines and we were able to taste a 2007 vintage and one of their second wines. Both were excellent. The Grand Cru wine we tasted was going for 65€ and may be aged another 10 years according to our guide. After the tasting, we browsed in the botique and decided on buying a half case of their Rosé. Our group of 10 has been going through wine like crazy and the Rosé was 6 bottles for 50€. A great deal! We had no problem consuming all that in a couple of days along with the other wines we bought from the other places. When in France, drink lots of wine!

There's just two different dining room, a small one and a bigger one for small groups. The resident chef has built the menu to pair with the wines but in an unusual and daring way. The decadent reds were paired with decadent fishes dishes and very delicate courses. Even the dessert has the same shape as a sculture just outside the Castle. It was a memorable moment.

My mother and I paid $300 each to have three glasses of wine and a mini tour of the estate which I found rather disappointing. I would of enjoyed seeing the bottling facility wish is located on the property, the aging vats, or even the wine library (this wine is known for aging very well!). We were shown the courtyard of the castle, a few vines and then rushed into a tasting room after a video describing noble rot. While the wine at chateau d'yquem is some of the best in the world, the experience could of been better for the cost. Offering a little bit of food with our wine would of been amazing.

My only disappointment was that we got one glass of a recent vintage. Given how much they have in stock, it would be best to showcase how well the wine ages and give the consumer a good idea of its aging potential. I could buy a new vintage at home, but I would not get the opportunity to try one with age. Perhaps the consumer would learn that they prefer aged Sauternes and not younger ones. Either way, wish we got more than 1 glass and more vintages to try.
