This was very sadly a disappointing Michelin dining experience on Easter Sunday…read more The Michelin guide notes Monsieur Jean's cuisine "is traditional and full of flavour." I certainly agree with traditional - there wasn't a single innovative dish on the menu of the day, and my boyfriend and I tried all eight of them (starters, mains and desserts). Think: shrimp in sauce, some very disgusting pate, cod in a bland sauce with white rice, lamb with quinoa salad, butternut squash soup, caramel dessert. Full of flavour? See above - bland sauces, several dishes undersalted, boring boring boring. The waitress was efficient but nearly disastrous in her clipped manner - wine drops on tablecloth, knocking my boyfriend's chair while serving another table, nearly spilling a glass of wine. It wasn't all bad - the amuse bouche was good, the spoonful of pistachio ice cream that came with one of the desserts was excellent, as were some of the caramel parts of the other dessert. But overall it was very uninventive and expensive (130 euros for lunch), and not deserving of a Michelin star in my book.

Tasty food but service is terrible!!!…read more We stopped here on the way from Paris to Amsterdam. First we had to wait for 20 mins to order food and then it took forever for them to bring food. I guess you should have at least 2 hrs to enjoy food here.

My fiance and I came here for dinner between Christmas and New Years and really enjoyed ourselves…read more We arrived at 7:30pm on a Tuesday night and it didn't start to pick up until 8-8:30 (typical French). I really liked the atmosphere and decor, but as an American and a Brit, we did find it to be a little tooooo quiet, but again, that is just a cultural difference. My steak was cooked a perfect medium rare and the wine was fantastic. Service was great, however I am deducting one star because after we ordered and were poured wine from our bottle our server informed us that their credit card machine was "broken" and it was cash only. So my fiance had to get up and go find an ATM machine. I did not notice any other diners getting up and leaving to go get cash and I find it difficult to believe that everyone in Lille walks around with that sort of cash on them. I think they singled us out because we were not French and I am not sure why. Other than that I would highly recommend!

It's tricky to find a proper, authentic restaurant anywhere around the Grande Place of Lille. The…read moregeneral rule of thumb is to stay away from any of the main street/square restaurants that advertise regional specialties with tacky sign boards. Le Barbue d'Anvers, although situated very close to the Grande Place, is not one of those terrible tourist traps. It's hidden down a cobblestone alley and doesn't do much for advertising. I know people who have lived in this neighborhood for three, four years and have never even noticed it. We took some friends visiting from London here for lunch and were immediately blown away by the vintage hotel lodge-like interior. By far the most handsome restaurant in town, but how about the food. I took the server's recommendation for a beer (wish I had remembered what it was called, because it was strong and good) which I drank with some foie gras and a smoked salmon starter. Both elegantly prepared and perfectly delicious. For my main course I had a high quality rack of lamb which left me just a little hungry. At the moment, this is my #1 for Lille, though I'll be dining at L'assiette Marché on Saturday so we'll see.

Once we got there, the maitre d' apparently had no knowledge of our reservation..... And then the asshole attitude started. They were inhospitable, rude and arrogant beyond belief. Even if they did not receive the reservation (as they claimed), their behavior is a plain proof that they have no clue how to run the restaurant. Very sad..
