There's very little I can think of that is more satisfying than the smells from a small family owned home bakery - breads, cakes, pastries and so it is here - beautiful bread and pastries including giant butter palmiers made with pride and quality. They usually have a mother yeast for breads that's there for generations.
We had an apartment in Vic so I went daily to various bakeries around us and there were many to choose from - most of the bakeries also sold great coffees. I got breads for breakfast daily and returned at lunch daily for different breads for lunch.
Home bakeries are real hard work: bakers wake literally in the middle of the night almost every night, to mix, roll, knead, weigh, rest, re roll, bake, cool and they'll have a whole days worth of work done before their bakery even opens.
These places are a key not only to good, fresh, quality healthy food at fair prices but they are the antithesis of the conglomerates that care only for as much money they can grab and if it means using crap ingredients and chemical preservatives they'll do it in a heart beat. read more
