Visiting hometown these days, my best high school friend, Montse, had a surprise in store for me:…read moreAl canto que va de canto (a famous expression both in Castilian and Catalan languages, some sort of ´watch up, something is coming up´. Interesting name for my favorite restaurant discovery this year in Sabadell. The place is presented everywhere as vinacoteca or wine bar. However, we had a menu tasting and it was an epic night for us, even though neigther of us had any wine!!! The restaurant is charming to the max, with plants and flowers and French home decor paraphernalia like magazines about interior decoration. So eclectic that every chair is different and you will think for a minute or so if you are in an antique shop or at a wine bar. Music was super mellow and not too many people, so we could really have a conversation with zero noise. Service was very personal and amiable, the owners are a husband and wife that will come to your table and will change your forks and knives every single time that they change your dish. We got a bunch of mini dishes, very creative cuisine, excellently presented and delicious in taste. My favorites were the cold melon soup with toasted ham, the hummus with truffles and tapenade, and all sorts of fish delicatessen. My sorbet dessert was so good too and my friend enjoyed her chocolate cake as well. Everything was very recommendable in this place, and the ironic thing is that they dont define themselves as restaurant, just as wine bar where you can find something to eat. You will find actually plenty to eat and you will have a very good experience in there.

With reservations a must, six of us finally got to try La Picara. There are a variety of tapas, ponchos and raciones on their menu. We tried a lot of them, and everything was delicious with the possible exception of Sepia a la Plancha, grilled squid which was too tough and chewy. Do NOT neglect to see their "Suggeriments fora de Carta" on a chalkboard. Most every off-the-chart suggestion we tried was exceptional, with my favorite actually being Tomaquets de Temporada amp Burratina í old D'Alfabrega. This was probably the best Burrata and Tomatoes serving I've ever tasted. It must be their spiced basil oil. The other standout special was a delicious Pintxo de Foie a la Plantxa, luxurious grilled foie gras skewer. A couple of drag queens came in promoting their show. They were a hoot at our table. Paola, the owner, was so kind and gracious. Service was fantastic. La Picara is definitely a must try during your time in Sitges!

All of the wines by the glass can be tasted in flights or just by the glass. We got deep into the list by having a red and white pairing and by trying 2 of the cavas. We learned of the flights after ordering the cavas. Needless to say we drank a good amount. Our sever Marie was so knowledgeable about the Spanish grapes and growing regions. As a Dutch ex pat she was so interesting to talk to and with. Not only did we talk about wine but also urban planning and social issues in our hike countries. One doesn't always get that with wine. The menu is extremely creative and also set up to be eaten as bites or shares and are paired with the wines. Be sure to try the foie gras and the short ribs. Everything on the menu sounded so delicious. If we didn't have a dinner reservation we would have eaten a lot more. The space is so lovely, modern, well lit and inviting. Any of the bottles on their wine list can be purchased as a discount, so of course we did. Highly recommend.

Though I don't think it is possible to go wrong with any of the brunch wine pairing! They all look amazing and I can't wait to come back and try a new pairing. Lastly, I am usually more of an introvert in a public place, but I was fascinated by the origin story of La Catalista. If you get a moment to talk to the owner, do it! There are life lessons that are as inspiring as the wine.
