We didn't make that mistake the next day and reserved early. The menu is limited in scope but not in quality. Casual cooking with a gourmet flair. Three in our party ordered the hamburger with chèvre, honey and bacon. Meat from the butcher across the street, local cheese and honey made for a fresh and tasty burger unlike what you typically see in the USA. The fourth person ordered the gazpacho and green salad and raved about those dishes as well. The desserts are all terrific. Over the course of two nights we had the apple crumble(deemed the best dessert on our trip), a lemon tart, crepe brûlée and several different flavors of ice cream. Overall, a great choice.

Did you know that almost every French establishment in the region has high chairs? Based on my experience in Paris I was convinced that the French had never heard of the invention. At L'Amaréna we showed up without reservations into a totally packed room. The chef/owner came over and found a spot for us to sit close to his open kitchen which was great for seeing all of the delicious dishes being served. The menu is huge, and has all sorts of wild pizza items to select from (there's even an escargot pizza!). We went a more traditional route, and were thoroughly satisfied. Just wish that they'd use mozzarella instead of the emmenthal but that seems to be a trend here too. The local rosé was crisp, delicious, and delightfully inexpensive. Special mention for the homemade mousse au chocolat and the adorable historic place that the pizza place overlooks. Make sure to reserve as the place is popular with the locals.

(Vegans and vegetarians begin spiel here.) That said the food here is delicious. I was more than a little concerned considering we'd gone to the zoo in the off season and Le Tropical was the only restaurant open in the park. They had a captive audience and they knew it so if they'd wanted to they could phone it in for the next few months and they'd still make plenty of money. But my meal was wonderful and I generously sampled several other items from people in our party. They were all delicious. The line was insane, again only place to eat in the park, and waiting out in the cold wasn't exactly fun but they got us through the line efficiently and there was plenty of seating upstairs. A surprisingly positive experience and far better food than I ever remember eating at an American zoo.
