After an absence of six or seven years, it was with some trepidation that I returned to my beloved Paris; not only to the same area, Montparnasse, but to the same street and hotel. You know the old story; you can never go back, and if you do its never as good as you remember. Well, I disproved that particular nugget of homespun wisdom. Paris, Montparnasse and the Rue Daguerre have, if anything, added to their charm and I'll cover that in other reviews. This review is for Le Autre The, a wee tea salon on Rue Daguerre.
Upon arrival at the hotel, this typical Glesca tea addict was gasping for a brew (and the chance to pose at a pavement table in my shades and wee black Yves Montand coat...), so a wander 'doon the Rue' brought me here.
Now I'm a working class Joe from Springburn, weaned on potent, 'two- tea bags- left in the mug' concoctions, but I grew into alternatives like Earl Grey etc as I realised that my stomach could do without a coating of tar. I'm no afficionado by any means but I know a good cuppa when I get it.
Le Autre The hits the spot in more ways than one.
From the best Earl Grey I've ever tasted, anywhere, to the attentive service of the friendly staff, this wee place is the perfect spot to relax, have a tasty brew and pretend that you're a local. The prices are great and your pot of tea gives a generous three cups.
So get the shades on, scowl a wee bit, light a Disque Blue and take a seat. You'll soon have tourists approaching you in a tangle of bumbags and maps asking for directions... read more
