A nice and cozy place to try out pottery painting but it's a tad pricey. I paid about $50 for a cupcake shaped dish and most prices start at $30 but the price includes supplies and baking in the kiln, so I understand the breakdown. read more

We did a little date night at The Clay Room and had a good time painting some ceramics. When you…read morecome in, you pay a fee for each item you want to paint, and then you get as long as you need to paint it. We got there pretty late (turns out just an hour isn't enough!) and they let us come in at a later date to finish our work, with no additional fees. There's additional space downstairs, but I didn't check it out. The employees are quite friendly, though our experience was entirely self-directed. There are plenty of people chatting while crafting; there are quite a few university students, probably due to the student discount. We ended up painting and firing three pieces. Sadly, one piece got chipped after firing. They did refire it, but we had to come back another time to pick it up. There's a pretty wide selection of ceramics, with a few "specialty" pieces, but it's worth noting they're Made in China designs, if you care about that sort of thing. Overall I would probably go back, with a bit more time in mind - there are plenty of great restaurants in the area to decompress, too!

I've completed many pieces there, including a yearly handprint ornament for my daughter. This time, after choosing our pieces and following their six-colour guideline for children, I was confronted by a clerk who told me my ten-year-old "only needs four colours" and that "it's four when we're busy." The tone was hostile, and the reasoning made no sense. Customers pay for the piece, the studio time, and the firing. Colour limits serve no purpose beyond making it easier for the establishment to handle customers. The same employee who was rude and hostile later called to say she hadn't realized we had more than one piece and that we could use six colours after all. By then, the experience was already compromised, so we did not return. Crock A Doodle was a direct contrast. Seven minutes away. Transit-friendly. Every table stocked with the full set of thirty colours. The price of the item covers everything: paint, time, and firing. It was straightforward and worth it.

Flash forward, both of us came back on Easter Sunday for an additional session to complete our work. Yvette wasn't working. It was a younger lady (who's name I forgot to ask). She was just as friendly as Yvette. I had booked the session online quite last minute (at around 2pm for a 3pm session) so she didn't have everything setup for us when we arrived but no worries. I'm happy I managed to salvage my horizon! **see my previous review** :) Just as Yvette had told me on our last visit, they only charged us the $6 studio fee for 2 ppl so $12 (no funny business). Our paintings turned out okay even without an instructor guiding us! After inspecting both of our paintings I noticed I like to use thicker, broader strokes and my gf uses thinner, more refined strokes. I'd definitely be open to coming back for canvas painting again or pottery perhaps in the future. Very fun!

We were asked to paint two halves of a picture, which made it really fun to see how everything came together. They also had a giant screen so we could easily follow along with the artist, and there were plenty of painting supplies available. You can also order food and drinks during the session, which made it even more enjoyable. The session was two hours long, but honestly, it went by so quickly because we were having such a great time. The artist was very friendly and did a great job providing instructions while keeping a steady pace that everyone could follow. My only criticism was that, for certain parts of the painting, the artist sometimes gave instructions that differed from what she was actually doing on her own painting. This made it a little confusing to follow and resulted in the class's paintings not quite matching the example on the screen. That said, it didn't take away too much from the overall experience. Overall, we had a fantastic time and would definitely come back again! It's a really fun activity for a date night, double date, or group outing.

For the painting we only paid $10 per piece and they also glaze and fire for you so you can actually use your pieces. The staff is always very kind and accommodating. Usually their classes and painting is one hour but they let us stay longer with any additional charges. Not only were they friendly, they were patient as I had to make the same cup 3 times and smooth it out. In the end we left pretty late leaving the venue. Thank you Crackpot for not kicking us out!! Some tips before going, clip your nails, especially if you plan to get down and dirty with any clay. Not feeling the clay? no worries, they have plenty of premade ceramics and paint. You don't even need to be extra creative as we watched others around us make lily pads and clay hands.
