When we walked into L'Arlequin's bar to have a drink, little did we know that by the end of the day we would have had two meals and spent six hours there! There are few restaurants where the chef is so present, so available, and so accommodating. When my wife asked for a citron pressé (with fresh lemon juice), the chef told us he did not have it but immediately added: but I'll make it for you. After five minutes, he emerged from the kitchen with what my wife called the best citron pressé she had ever had.
We asked if we could have something to eat and were invited to move to the restaurant, which is in a separate room. Instead of the small snack we intended to have, we tried the "menu." We trusted the chef's suggestions and were rewarded. Throughout the meal, we were surprised with little extras which made the meal even more fun.
Another example of the chef's consistent flexibility: when we could not choose between red and rosé wine, the chef brought us a bottle of both and allowed us to have as much of each as we wanted!
To cut a long story short, we spent three hours on a delightful lunch at L'Arlequin -- and for dinner we went back for another three hours with our travel companions! The chef kept on accommodating us, finding ingenious solutions, and entertaining us with his idiosyncratic humor. Another table of visitors came in shortly after us and had the same experience.
Some standout dishes: paupiettes de veau, williamine (pear ice cream with pear liquor), mystère flambé, and tarte tatin, which can be served flambé as well!
Note that the experience will be best for those who speak French.
