Ambiance was charming, service agreeable, plates could have been done better…read more La mère jean was my first bouchon expérience in Lyon and it was very nice. However I knew it would not be my only bouchon dinner after trying the typical dishes of eggs in red wine sauce and fish dumplings. I had never had these food before but I know how to cook so I knew something was off. The red wine sauce was thin and watery and the fish dumplings dense and pale. It was a Monday evening so perhaps the best chef had the night off. The wine was very good and the atmosphere was perfectly lyonnaise.

The execution was on point. The dumplings totally had pike/fish flavor but so light and delicate. However the star is what lies beneath it. The lobster bisque was insanely good and brought added dimension to the dumpling. It was served with scalloped potatoes. I started with the cheese and salad. I never had cottage cheese so fresh and light. No comparison to the one you get in the market. It was whipped with herbs and olive oil with a wonderful mouth feel. The dessert was a let down. A praline tart. I should have gone with the cheese plate, but I wanted to end with something different.

There was only one other Yelp review when we came here. Atmosphere - On a small side street, but the trip is worth it. When you arrive you enter in the bar and greeted. We were directed to the dining room the right. We were there for three hours and the only ones in the dining room. We did arrive early as the kitchen was not open. It was fine we had drinks to tide us over. Food Drinks - I had Maredsous 6° Blonde, which I enjoyed. At the end of the night we were offered drinks the owner's mother made. There was a homemade limoncello and an orange-cello. I had the orange flavored liquor, it was tasty. Appetizer - We had some free tortilla chips and salsa. Dinner - Boeuf for me one. Yes I had more steak during this European vacation. The steak was cooked to medium as I ordered it. Loved the seasoning on it. Desert - Fromage, a small plate of different cheeses, nuts, and raisins. Perfect way to end all the food. Service - Sure we were the only one in the dining room but the bar behind me was bustling. Our waiter was also the owner. We practiced our French and he worked on his English skills. Okay I just sat back and listened as I have zero French skills. I was already to place my order in French, one word I had to say and I choked. I ended up saying it in English. When I got the puzzled looked I was able to say "Boeuf" with Julia Child saying Boeuf Bourguignon my head. Future - Yes please, the owner was great to visit with.

Because we were early our waiter was also the owner. He was so lovely. We attempted to speak in French and he attempted to speak in English. At some point we played a little charades to get to "goat cheese" and it was very funny. The cocktails were delicious. The food was homestyle french eating and was oh so good! At the end of the dinner he brought us out his moms homemade lemoncello as a digestif. We laughed, drank, ate and enjoyed a leisurely evening. Great place!!!
