Went there earlier this evening with my parents and some family for a nice dinner - there was a…read moresmall group of us, six to be exact and after a quick drive over, we proceeded to find Place Denfert Rochereau and the restaurant which is adjacent to it. The place looked great from the outside and was rather cute; a nice open terrace with a few tables and chairs and some plants. On the inside, a classic, casual looking place with a small yet nice bar on the right. Three taps here, a few tables there, nothing too fancy but yet it all comes together wonderfully.
We checked in with one of the staff members and were immediately seated. Having made reservations the day before on LaFourchette.com, we had complimentary flutes of champagnes and were promptly seated. We could see the specials on the chalk board near our table and after some translating work from the French to the English, we placed our orders.
On the menu was all kinds of simple but yet reliable items - from tripes to various steaks, from fresh melon & prosciutto to other dishes like escargots, celeri remoulade and even boeuf Bourguignon. There were also various charcuterie-style dishes and various other ones like beef hooves and roasted bone marrow.
Personally, I settled for an order of the Ravioles de Royan au pistou (€10) which was absolutely delicious. The dish featured these tiny raviolis, the smallest ones I had seen, with a delicious cream and cheese sauce. It wasn't too rich and was delightful. Alongside that appetizer, my entree was an order of rumsteak which came with a roquefort sauce and some waffle-fries-like-potatoes. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium and there was a generous portion of roquefort on top along with a sauce around it. For (€23), it made for a tasty and perfect portion and the fried potatoes on the side were good as well. They were much thinner than your usual waffle fries and paired well with the sauce and the protein.
The wine that we ordered was good as was the service through the meal. All in all the place was clean and is what I would consider a hidden gem. I knew that I would like it walking in but it exceeded my expectations and made for a great meal and a great atmosphere. The staff there isn't too serious and has fun and it shows and they convey a great atmosphere. I shall return in the future.
