I was surprised by the amount of items in this seemingly small store. The aisles were packed with stuff. This is not a very large store but there is a terrific selection. I was able to get my drink and was happy they used Styrofoam which I LOVE. I know it's bad for the environment but it keeps the drinks cooler so much longer. Bad on me. Yes, this is a convenience store but it's not your typical convenience store. They had the regular fare of chips and candies. There was just more to this quaint little store. It has a different energy. You got the feeling they weren't rushing you out of the store like so many other places. They had all sorts of tobacco choices, as well. A clerk even offered to help me which never happens in other stores. The staff was friendly and attentive. They were helpful and nice. A smile goes a long way in customer service. This store is easily accessible and it was easy-in, easy-out. Prices seemed reasonable, as well. Downtown Lawrence is a few blocks away so this is a great location. Highly impressed and pleased. As someone that will take all of the Hispanic grocery stores this town can give us, I stumbled by…read moreaccident today onto Casa Azteca Market, tucked way back in the corner of the plaza area best known for hosting the big 23rd Street Ace Hardware, an oriental market, a bank, several pizza delivery joints serving the college crowd, and arguably the best sushi destination in the city: Nagoya Japanese Cuisine. Yep, that's reason to pull the car into the big parking area this area provides. The store carries most of the things you'd expect in a small Hispanic grocery of this size, but here's what got my attention: they have plans to open a street style taqueria with sit-down service in the next few months. Now THAT I can get behind. Chatted up a couple people working and they seem to know their stuff, planning to have tripas, pastor, lingua, barabacoa... the good stuff. The store also carries a mini assortment of home needs for the medicine cabinet as well, handy for some of the apartment buildings behind this complex, assuming they ever discover it. Asprin/Advil, toiletries, etc. With the plethora of pizza delivery joints in this complex, you'd think they'd discover it. Yea, maybe not. PIcked up some hot chilis, mayocobas and a Mexican soft drink. Big spender. Enjoyed the people working here, now keeping an eye out for that taqueria when it opens. Steaks and hamburgers are grilled to order on an outside grill. The cook is passionate about all of the food and stopped to talk to us. The waitress is running around and also very knowledgeable about food. Give her grace when it gets busy. We had a great conversation with Charlie at the cash register who explained the origin of the restaurant and what they've been doing recently. It is very casual.

That being said, despite some wear and tear, it's still a very solid gas station, and they've added some modern QT additions to it, like QT kitchen, which makes it little extra nice when you are on the road. This location has seen me through my college days, and honestly still is my go-to when I'm in and around Lawrence and in need of gas. On my most recent visit, I was driving home from a family gathering in Manhattan, and we all treated ourselves to little milkshakes. Honestly they are really decent little treats for a gas station. I was wedded to the Dillons system because I liked their fuel savers program. But I started shopping more and more at HyVee. It just made sense to start getting my gas there, too. The HyVee Fuel Savers program is not as good overall as the one at Dillons, though. HyVee gives you rewards on only certain items you buy. Dillons gives rewards on how much money you spend at the store. Don't get me wrong- there have been some great savings at HyVee. The difference in the programs is slight. The cashiers and staff are very friendly and the store is all sparkly clean. They also have convenience store pizza!! It's a favorite. Great pizza, price-is-right gas, and great customer service.
