Currently biased / low-quality locally produced content. I am a middle-of-the-road person. Unfortunately, the station is currently mostly "woke" and identity-driven. It consistently does not present a balanced / reasoned perspective, because there is little or no moderate / conservative voice. For example, the Friday "week in review" previously had some balance with representation from a moderate, such as Rob McKenna, but for whatever reason that is totally or mostly gone. The current WIR moderator tends to be flip and the panelists chiming in together not very insightful or funny, despite weak attempts at humor. To attract the educated Seattle audience, KUOW needs to greatly improve their local programming. Syndicated KUOW programs such as LA Theater Works and BBC World News are very high quality. Locally produced programs like "Week in Review" and Soundside are often biased and like an echo chamber. read more

I have been a lifelong NPR listener everywhere I have lived and have enjoyed so much variety in the programs. The programming on KUOW is almost exclusively focused on racial/social justice/lgbt identity matters. It seriously never stops talking about race. We get it, racism exists. During the week I kind of view KUOW as liver, or fish oil. It's good for you, but may not be all that enjoyable. I find All things considered et al informative but kind of long winded, a tad pompous and a little patronizing. But my Saturdays are devoted to KUOW. We start in the shower with the car talk guys. Annoying for sure, but funny just the same. Just like I get a lot of my news from the Daily Show, I get my obscure news from Wait Wait Don't Tell me, the very funny current events game show. I run hot and cold with This American Live. Sometimes the firtst person stories can be a little too precious. I DO avoid Garrison Keilor like the the plague. Honestly, I don't know who told that guy he can sing. Come on already, my drunk Uncle Leo told better stories. But I finish the day with the always entertaining Swing Years and Beyond. Amand Wild plays some of the best music from the 30's 40's and 50's. She provides enough commentary to be informative but not annoying. I work on Sundays and this show ends my weekend in a happy mood. read more

This is our favorite station in Seattle. I especially like their BBC through the night; I've heard the most amazing stories there. I also love "The World" and the little features they sneak in during the day like "Writer's Almanac" with Garrison Keillor. I'm not a fan of the daily "The [lame] Conversation" or their gardening shows, but I can't complain too much. She was moving back to her homeland, and there was no turning back. i turned up the radio and heard a familiar voice. Her voice. She had recently been hired for a local radio spot. Picking the right number of stars for KUOW is a struggle; in fact, I've been thinking about this review for 18 months. I won't dock them stars for being a National Pentagon Radio station; it's not their fault that NPR's news org has largely become a corporate shill, and helped lead the charge to war in Iraq. Formula: -- Start with 5 stars for not playing classical music 20 hours a day like so many college-town NPR stations. -- Strip off four stars for "Weekday" with Steve Scher. Steve Scher is likely a very nice man, good to his wife and kids, a solid neighbor, good dinner companion -- and a buffoon. He's a journalist like those mini-skirted hoochies on Fox News are journalists. He couldn't do less preparation for his interviews if he had a six year-old send him book reports. His questions are inane softball bullshit, and he too often responds to points by his guests with such deep thoughts as "huh". Listening to Steve Scher could put a jonsing addict to sleep. Why this guy gets such amazing guests, I'll never know. -- Minus three more stars for the insanely shitty guests that alternate on "Weekday". For every Freeman Dyson, you have some inane Seattle librarian recommending the latest Nancy Drew. For every Richard Clake, there are fifteen segments on gardening with begonias or talks with idiot Seattle newspaper folk. "Weekday" is, too often, like some horrible Saturday Night Live parody of NPR programming. -- Add three stars back on for excellent local news coverage; some of the deeper segments by KUOW's news staff even make it to national coverage. -- Add four more stars for featuring the BBC. -- Minus two stars for horrible Eastside reception. You guys are the flagship NPR station in the Sound, but KPLU's signal (from Tacoma!) absolutely murders yours. Come on, now. -- Minus another star for "Wait, wait, don't tell me." This staple of public radio arrogance should be torpedoed. -- Add three stars for "The Conversation". -- Add two more stars for carrying "To The Point". -- Subtract two stars for the repulsive "Sound Focus". I removed KUOW from my preset stations when they made the decision to promote the gay lifestyle at about the same time. Most people's bodies are around 65% water. My brain is around 65% NPR. I've been listening ever since childhood and the thought of leaving my beloved WSKG in New York when I moved to Seattle was crushing. Luckily KUOW more than fills that aching need for intelligent discussion, hokey comedy, banter, and all things news. I don't listen to so much local programming, mostly because it's on while I'm at work, but programs such as Speaker's Forum are worth making time for. Many lectures in the area, such as those given by Barack Obama and George Lakoff last year, are recorded and then replayed on Speaker's Forum soon after. Just in case you can't quite find the time to listen in all episodes are archived on the internets! Yay technology! Other can't miss programs for me: Morning Edition, This American Life, Prairie Home Companion, Say's You, The Splendid Table, Car Talk, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, and Radio Lab. If you've never heard Radio Lab get on Google and download the first two seasons. Now. I'll wait... It's one of the most fascinating programs I've ever listened to, covering topics like emergent behavior and what is at the root of the placebo effect. It's not widely played yet so I'm extremely grateful that KUOW had the foresight to pick it up. Not everything is perfect though. My two main complaints would be: First, Prairie Home Companion has a crappy slot on Saturday that I'm never home; luckily it plays again on Sunday at a slightly better time. Say's You has similar problems vis a vi my schedule. Second, please stop with that god awful 'What Do You Know?' on Sunday afternoon. This is the most entertaining radio station around (tied with KEXP). I drive all over the place so it is essential that I have something good to listen to. Their lineup is stellar, but if you're up on Saturday before noon you should listen. They have what has to be the three most entertaining hours of radio in Seattle. I loved listening to NPR for their straightforward delivery of the news and in-depth analysis. Sure, it made the kids yawn, but that's all I wanted to hear. If I wanted jaunty morning-show jibber jabber, I'd get the news from tv. So how disappointed was I when they tried to "revamp" Morning Edition with new hosts a couple years ago? One of the main benefits to getting my news from NPR was how professional and authoritative they sounded. Now the new hosts can barely spit out TWO SENTENCES without mucking it up or stumbling over words and phrases like drunken sorority girls. I'm not listening to what they're saying now so much as wishing the old host was back. Seriously, the next time you listen, count how many bumbles and mistakes are made in ONE minute of air-time. I thought these people were PROFESSIONALS! And not only can they NOT read the paper in front of them, they're now doing the ever-so-annoying chat-time segues between stories. "Oh Bunny, how was the basketball game last night?" "It was great! I had front row seats and was screaming my brains out!" "It must've been cold on the way out." "Why yes it...." IT DON'T CARE!!!! JUST GIVE ME THE NEWS!!!!!!!! And speaking of news, five stories on goddamn Michael Jackson during my fifteen minute morning routine does not constitute news. I spend a ridiculous amount of time driving for work. I go to meetings all over King County - and perhaps you've noticed, we've got us some traffic! I cope with my road rage through KUOW/NPR. There isn't much about this station that I don't love! Brainy in-depth conversation and news. I love the Conversation, Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me, This American Life, The Car Guys, Weekday, etc... Oops, I think I just listed the entire schedule (minus A Prairie Home Companion - I hate APHC). The station is soothing, interesting, and I always show up for my meetings with a new fascinating (to me) story. I enjoy that they (try) to look at issues from multiple point of view, I often have "driveway" moments, and expand my vocabulary - all from the comfort of my car! read more

This used to be a really good NPR station, but has gone downhill over the past decade. I'd try one of the other Puget Sound area stations, like KPLU, for your news and WA state info. Personally, I'm looking for in-depth, wide-ranging news and info on the radio. Decades ago, I lived in Boston and was spoiled by WBUR there. When I came to Seattle, I naturally listened to KUOW. It was a bit quirky, and took some time to get used to Steve Scher's hour-long interview shows, but I made it a part of my daily life and was happy. Sadly, in recent years the quality of KUOW programming has gone down. There seems to have been a mindset shift toward "dumbing down" the programming there -- no more extensive, wide-ranging interviews and in-depth local stories other than what's on ATC and Morning Edition. The program content has also shifted from information/public issue discussion to entertainment. The station doesn't play the actual entertainment, mind you, they just play endless interviews with the entertainers, who typically don't have that much interesting to say (they are *entertainers*, after all). As some might text, OMG! Another facet of the "dumbing down": there are more and more little snippets of stories, whether local or culled from BBC and other sources, that leave you not-very-informed and wanting more. Finally, KUOW is inexplicably proud of being "self-supporting" and insists that you know that, leading to continual subtle and not-so subtle reminders to DONATE MONEY TO KUOW. I'm not talking about the fundraising drives, I'm talking about longer and longer sponsorship//////////////commercial messages, endless reminders that there's still time to donate, and thousands of reminders per day to donate your old car to KUOW (well, it SEEMS like thousands some days!). Now that stations are shifting to streaming or at least podcasts, there are more choices. That's good for the listening public, but likely not so good for KUOW. read more

I've tried public radio stations across the USA and KUOW is unmatched. The station is a leader in the public radio industry, in several cases being the first station to put new shows on the air. KUOW both reflects and enhances the Seattle culture of an educated populace. The hosts are down-to-earth, engaging, educated, and have backbone without ever being rude. They foster dialogue, not conflict. The music, while a small portion of what airs, is awesome. I have heard nearly every genre of music for program transitions, and pretty much all of the new music I've discovered in the last five years has been attributable to KUOW in some way. Every radio in my house, my office, my car is tuned to KUOW. In addition to being a regular listener, I am a member and a pledge drive volunteer. This past year, my husband and I donated our two old cars to KUOW. I give my time and money to KUOW because it is a such a wonderful source of more detailed and more balanced information than you'll get most anywhere. Sometimes, it is just plum interesting. Sometimes, it just makes me laugh so hard I know not to eat while listening lest I choke on my Cheerios. KUOW is a HUGE source of news for me. I love "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered." I spend Saturday mornings with Scott Simon and do the puzzle with Leanne and Will every Sunday AM. Sunday afternoons, are spent with Tavis. I can mosey over to KXOT, KUOW's "sister station" to hear "Talk of the Nation" and "Fresh Air." If I'm up in the middle of the night, I can listen to the BBC. KUOW is also a source of entertainment. "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me," "Says You!" and "The Vinyl Café" are all favorite shows. AND, since Seattle is such a great NPR town, I have had the opportunity (and the pleasure) of seeing all of these shows live! There are so many other shows ("On the Media," "This American Life," "The Splendid Table," etc.) that keep me informed and entertained. I used to be a huge fan of "Car Talk," but lately find it to be just a rehash of all the same old jokes. When Garrison Keillor comes on, the radio goes off. I am yet another public radio junkie. I believe I was spoiled in Minnesota, where my public radio formative years were spent listening to MPR, which had what to this day I believe was the strongest programming lineup around on KNGA out of St. Peter. No matter where I move, there is a growing pains period for me, where I slowly adjust to the programming offered. An exception was Oregon, where I never quite adjusted to the options. Seattle, though, required no adjustment. Despite programming differences between KUOW and previous favorite stations, I fell right in with the news & views expressed here. On top of the NPR regulars like Morning Edition and All Things Considered, I discovered some real gems, programs that I've never heard anywhere else, and I recommend catching them if you can. 1) If you're into words and the English language, don't miss "Says You! a game of words and whimsy, bluff and bluster," which (for nerds like me) is a humorous and enlightening show about word definitions and derivations. (Saturdays at 6pm) 2) "The Vinyl Cafe," a great show that combines (usually) Canadian music -- often folk -- with stories written by the show's creator, Stuart McClean, as well as listeners. A good friend of mine once said she loved this show because it's "so pithy," and I can't think of a better description -- McClean's stories express the essential aspects of humanness in such a way that I often laugh and cry at the same time while listening. Show's like these are why I like public radio in general and why I LOVE KUOW. Listen, appreciate, and support. read more

I love public radio. I was raised on it. It plays in my car and at my house almost non stop. I've lived in several NPR markets, and KUOW is not a bad station, but it isn't the best NPR either. Maybe it's just my vaguely snobbish dislike of local programming, but I'd honestly rather hear Neil Conan and Terry Gross than I would Steve Scher and Ross Reynolds. Talk of the Nation and Fresh Air are two of the best programs produced for radio today, and I have a hard time fully enjoying an NPR station that chooses not to carry them. On the other hand, KUOW is still NPR, and it's still so much better than anything else on the dial. I can't really rate it below four stars, but without TotN and Fresh Air, I can't give it 5 either. read more

I listen to KUOW on my MP3 player on Saturdays during my long runs. At 9:00 a.m. is "Car Talk" which is just hysterical. I think they sell bumper stickers that say "I'm not laughing at you, I'm listening to Car Talk on the radio". Next, at 10:00 a.m. is "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" which is an oddly informative news quiz. At 11:00 a.m. is "This American Life". (I still have my favorite stories from that show, including the one about the devastating tornado on prom night.) I'm usually home by that time, and many times I've just sat in the car in the garage listening until the show is over. I would have given it a 5 Star rating, but the reception is sometimes dicey on the Eastside. read more

Whether it's the 15th rerun of The Prairie Home Companion on the weekend or his insipid Writer's Almanac; listening to his wet lips lick themselves erotically over the birthday of a superior writer makes me want to take a blowtorch to my own face just to make the sound stop molesting my ears. no doubt about it. one of the absolute best. i listen to them as i get up in the morning. i listen to them as i drive into work. now when i attempt to try to listen to normal radio stations, the commercials start to make me sub-human. like i am nothing but an empty container to have thoughts of consumption shoved endless into it. kuow fills me with knowledge, entertainment, insight, depth, and real information with a dab of emotional satisfaction. yes, i even listen to the fund raising. it's part of the deal you make with public radio. read more

Good NPR station for news and information. I live in Seattle and find good programming there. But if you have a complaint of any sort, they go radio silent. It says on the website through which you send a comment that you will hear back in three business days. Not so! At least, not if you have any criticism to offer. To date, two comments sent on different topics, the last sent many days ago. No response. The management does not want to hear anything negative nor engage with listeners who might have a less-than-positive take on something the station has done. When he didn't know what that was, she was AGAIN CONDESCENDING to him. He was made to look like an idiot and the ad for more money for the station seemed to indicate it was perfectly OK to treat a man that way. They would never consider treating a woman in such a condescending and disrespectful manner. So, from a guy who is part of half of your audience, I will listen less and it will be a "cold day" when I send money to a station with a bigoted outlook on half of its' audience. Within 30 minutes of driving in the car each morning I'm up to date with the latest news. They talk about topics that matter - from activists in India to development projects in Africa to social concerns with youth in Japan - basically information I'd never be exposed to if all I listened to was local news. KUOW is the most important radio station in this area, hands down. To me, the local focus shows are far better than much of the national stuff. Weekday is amazing with it's long list of great guests and Steve Scher, who must be the most well informed human being on the planet. The Mayor, The Governor, The County Exec. The Local news wonks, Vaughn Palmer the wonderful journalist from Canada, helpful home repair advice, helpful, expert gardening advice - this coverage of our local and regional scene is far better on KUOW than anywhere else, by a country mile. The Conversation is also a great show inviting input on current topics from the listenership, and Ross Renyolds deserves a lot of credit - that's a tough show to keep going. I usually like The Swing Years And Beyond when Amanda isn't playing too much of the really old crap from the 20's and 30's that's just bad music. I like the music from after the second world war to the 60's. Wait, Wait and Says You are great and funny. But I can't listen to KUOW all the time for many reasons: NPR News has been going down hill for several years and they have this one endorsement announcer named Frank Tovaris who seems to come on every ten minutes with the most obnoxious, nasal syllable-chewing voice - Saphooort fooooor Ennn Peee RRRRR is brought to you frahaam . . . god, I have to shut off the radio when this unprofessional dork comes on. I also don't care for This American Life either, Ira Glass sounds like the autistic guy Dustin Hoffman played in Rain Man, and too often it's a bunch of juvenile navel-gazing with really bad background music. And where the hell did they dig up The Vinyl Cafe - does this guy love the incipid sound of his own voice?
