TLDR: All around the best experience! Barely any flaws…read more This was my 2nd time ever staying a hostel. I stayed around XMAS time and it was well worth the decision to choose Wombats. I definitely would stay at this chain again. [ PRICING ] It is cheaper to book directly with Wombats than through a service site, like HostelWorld. However, the price difference is insignificant (only a couple of dollars) There are different types of rooms available. You can choose from a mixed or female-only room, how many people are in your dorm (3-8 ppl). It just depends on what is available at the time. Private rooms are more expensive and are better suited if you have enough people to fulfill the space or are willing to pay more. I'm not sure if prices change depending on when you book (with exception of major events of course). [ SERVICE ] The staff is great, friendly, and helpful. During Christmas, the staff provided a list of places that are open which is super helpful. [ CHECK-IN/OUT ] Checking is a smooth and easy process. Front desk is open 24 hours. To receive your key, instead of a financial deposit, you need to leave some form of ID with them (i.e. drivers license or other non-passport ID). Make sure to have one accessible but be sure to give them one you would not need during your trip. For instance, it might be good to keep your student ID since some places will give you student discounts and require proof. They give you a map of the city with suggestions for food, places to sightsee, etc. It's nice to reference. You also get a coupon for a free drink at the bar. These definitely help welcome you into the city and the hostel environment. The front desk should also give you a number tag so that you can mark your bed in your dorm. The number matches what locker number you have. Make sure to give this back when checking out or you will be charged. [ DORMS ] The dorms are very safe. In order to get inside to access the rooms, you need a key card. For your room itself, use the same card to get in. Sheets are provided for each bed. You need to put it on yourself which can take time and be confusing at first. I recommend just getting it done with so you can just come back and lay down. When you are checking out, be sure to bring down the sheets. The room as a whole is spacious and clean. The bunk beds are spaced out from each set in the room so it does not feel like you're super close to other people. It feels like you have your own personal space. I came with a friend in a 6 bed dorm and it felt like we had our own side in the room. For each bed, there is a space with an outlet, a small counter, and a light. Included in your room are lockers for safekeeping. They are secure and you need your key card to lock and unlock it. They are pretty big so there should be plenty of space to fit your belongings, such as a large backpack or small suitcase. There's a hanger rack. Inside the room is a section with tables and chairs. It encourages interactions and is nice to sit down especially when I am only taking a small break, do not want to climb back into bed especially when I have dirty clothes on. The bathroom is inside the room. It is pretty big and clean. There is space to leave your toiletries without having to leave it in the shower. [ AMENITIES ] There are several amenities. Free WIFI! The common room is super chill and relaxed. It's extremely comfy so you'll see people resting and falling asleep there. Laundry is downstairs. Each machine is 3€ but only accepts 50 cent coins. You can ask for change at the front desk if needed. The bar opens at 6pm. It always seems lively and the bartenders have always friendly. You can play pool and also buy games to play with people. The interior of the bar is super spacious and has a lot of seating. Great place to socialize and make friends. If you go up the stairs, there is a kitchen and eating area. You can purchase breakfast if you'd like. The eating area has a lot of space to chill or eat at. The kitchen has two fridges and labels. Pots, pans, utensils are free and accessible. [ CULTURE/COMMUNITY ] To my surprise, it seemed like there was a diverse range of people. There are young travelers as well as people who seem to be in their 40s. Everyone is friendly (staff and travelers) and I was able to easily meet people from all across the world. I recommend going to the bar to socialize and putting yourself out there! [ LOCATION ] The hostel is in a very good location and has a lot nearby. A lot of places are within walking distance and there is a bus stop and train station nearby. Within the area, there are many food places to try. There is a grocery right next door and many Asian markets in the block. Directly across is the Naschmarkt market which has lots of seafood. Would everyone be loud and rambunctious, would I struggle to connect to the internet, etc. I've stayed in hotels that offered less amenities that they did. There was a single bed with your own locker of course, plenty of room to stretch out. They had a living room with couches and a television, books, I think even games to play. The kitchen area also had plenty of sitting areas, an oven and stove, fridge, sink, silverware, plates, etc. There was basic stuff like sugar, spices, tea, coffee, milk, even a little wine. Plus there's a washer (with detergent) and dryer. There were several showers so bathing didn't become an issue of trying to queue up in the morning. They had soap, shampoo, mouthwash, toothpaste, etc. Even a little set of nail clippers, nail file, etc. One room had four beds, the other had eight, to give you an idea of spacing. The woman who runs it is super friendly. She is only there in the morning, but you can gain access to the hostel any time with the intercom. If she's there and you need directions, she'll help you out. Plus there's wifi so you can look up stuff that way, too. Oh, and everything I mentioned? The breakfast, laundry, etc.? It's free. You want cereal, a glass of wine, and to do a load of laundry? Help yourself. It's an amazing hostel.

A wonderful hotel in a wonderful location!…read more Located directly across from St. Stephens, this contemporary boutique hotel is in the perfect location to see all that Vienna has to offer within a short walk. Or the subway entrance is right out front so you can venture as far as you want! The rooms are well furnished for a European hotel- large towels (even washcloths which are not common in Europe) nice toiletries, and coffee in the room. We upgraded to a suite on the top floor and had our own personal balcony with a table, chair and umbrella to sit outside and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Plaza. The included breakfast in the morning was one of the best we had on our trip! Pastries, eggs, bacon, sausage, breads, meats, cheeses, etc- whatever you wanted - it was there. And they have a couple of guys making your favorite coffee drinks as well so I could have sat in the breakfast room all day. And the staff was super accommodating- they ordered us a taxi on our last day and because they did it (or maybe it was the time of day) they were able to pick us up out front versus us having to walk from the pedestrian plaza that this is located on. Know before you go that if you are driving- I'm not sure exactly how close you can get before you have to park your car although there is a parking garage on the nearby side street. Why not 5 stars you ask? The bed just wasn't as comfortable as it could be. It was hard and just wasn't what I was expecting given everything else was so great! But if you like a really hard beds- this could be your place. That aside- we had a great visit and would return the next time we are in Vienna!

It is super super close (like 2 minutes) to the fantastic Austrian metro that gets you everywhere you need to go in Vienna. And beyond. It is also an easy walking distance to the top shopping street in Vienna. Where you can shop to your hearts desire and eat all the gelato you want. The hostel itself is great. I stayed in a 6 person mixed dorm room (never doing that again for reasons to be revealed below). It was actually a wonderful opportunity to meet fellow travelers from all over the world. Some of whom got to experience Vienna with me. The room and the bathroom was exceptionally clean. I love the fact that they have laundry facilities available down in the basement. The staff was super nice. I ended up (unfortunately) having an issue with an inappropriate roommate (not Wombat's fault). They quickly found a way to give me a new room that night even though the hostel was fully booked. And topped that off with a free breakfast ticket. I appreciate their quick response during that very awkward time, as well as the smiles they always had on their faces. Would I stay there again? Absolutely yes. I'll likely just get a private room cause while wombat is great and most people are great, a handful of people are just not that great :) Stay here!

This hostel was a little ways away from the metro (across the Danube and down a block or so), which tended to put me off in other places, but it actually landed the hostel in such a perfect location of great restaurants and quiet streets that I really didn't mind. The place is modern, clean, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are awesome. Granted, our room looked a bit like a tornado hit it, but that's due to crappy room mates, not the cleaning staff of MEININGER Franz. Anyways, those roommates checked out so the remaining roomies declared what was ours, we tossed the rest in the trash, and it was gone that evening. Problem solved and we were all happier for it. The ensuite bathrooms were awesome! There was a toilet and sink room, and then a shower and sink room opposite. That really came in handy, so I would definitely stay at MEININGER's going forward for that addition alone. It's just nice to do your hair and brush your teeth while another person is showering, the morning routine doesn't have to stop. The bunks were super comfortable. I was out like a light. The sheets are fresh and clean, and outlets and lights are available at every bunk. The common room was great! After a long day of walking all over Vienna and visiting museums (which are at the very closest about a mile away from the hostel, so get a metro pass and take advantage of it; believe me, you'll be doing PLENTY of walking even taking the metro to each stop), my group ordered some beers and chilled downstairs. A guy around our age asked if he could drink with us, which, of course!! He was from just outside Barcelona and we talked of our travels, and then an Australian woman piped up so we called her over, and a pit stop to our dorm room revealed a guy fresh in from Montreal, so he came down and joined our group. It was so wonderful! All these strangers from around the world just traveling, gathering to share a drink in the common room of a hotel/hostel in Vienna, Austria: it's what backpacking is all about. It was so great! The next morning the breakfast spread was very large and plentiful, so if you eat a lot, maybe it's worth it. It was Sunday and a lot of places in Europe don't open on Sunday, so our options were limited and we paid what we considered too much for the Breakfast. We say it was too much because my group are not big breakfast eaters. We just don't need a lot early in the day, a bowl of cereal or granola bar usually does is just fine, so €6,90 for breakfast kind of sucked. But it was good, I'll give them that. And, as is tradition, when we checked out and didn't have to catch our flight until later that afternoon, MEININGER Franz locked up our luggage for us so we could continue to wander Vienna without our backpacks. I loved this place. I didn't book it, my sister did, and I remember thinking it was a bit expensive, but it was totally worth it. So totally worth it. I have a friend going to Vienna next year and I raved about this place and said she would absolutely love it, it's right up her style. You feel safe, clean, and also like you can just start talking to anyone in the common room and not get weird looks like you would maybe in a hotel in The States. It's so wonderful; like I said, I'll be staying in these places again!
