Whoever likes concrete in the middle of a fantastic nature he or she will probably like it. Everything was done spending a lot of money.nalos the place is expensive for the quality provided (wine taken out of this evaluation as I am not an expert on wine) Food: Unfortunattly the food does not live up to the expectations. Overall it was tasteless to put it mildly, was prepared nicely though. The food at lunch was prepared as a buffet with various courses. There was some mashed patatoes (kartoffelpuree) that was almost liquid and hard to eat with a fork. Chicken with gravy - the meat was very dry and lots of gravy with mushrooms. The mushrooms were ok. The entire food in its consistance rather liquid or very watery including the salads so I really did not see the need for that many forks on the table. The spoons however could be nicely used. They had various bread types, quite good and toghether with the precise 3 sorts of chees offered at the cheese bufet it saved the day. For the evening it was again the cheese that saved it. They served a menu withsome fish soup and some really I do not exagerate meat that was not done at all so really rare and in blood. And not only mine but for everybodies. Same salads from lunch were there. In general they try to seem as they would offer cuisine and they still have a long way to go. Service: The restaurant staff was very cold and distant, somewhat unfriendly if contacted. It seemed they they did not want to make contact with the customers and they avoided any eye contact or looking around. When asked for something sometimes (2 or 3 times) they replied they cannot do it now as they have sth else to do. Several times they said yes but they never brought anything. I guess there are some guys waiting for their coffee until today. Reception: not really trained to deal with multiple customers and various spontan requests. Rooms: very big and spacious. I personally do not like bare concrete walls, even if painted white. So cold atmosphere. In general this place lacks "love" and definitly training for all employees. I realise that this place is mainly for drinking wine, and I also feel that the other points require attention in order to create a nice feeling. No matter how many types of wine a place has in its cellars. The first thought was: wow here I will come again. That thought lasted until the first lunch. Then I thought, o well that was bad luck dinner will be better. Wrong! Than , well they cannot miss breakfast, this is easy going. Was ok, the guy made a very good omlett, hence the one star.

I don't think that I ever encountered them that they did not bow. Although my wife and I both speak German, the proprietors also speak English. They gave us excellent site seeing advice for both Dürstein and the area. There is both a hotel and a restaurant. We stayed at the hotel for three nights and completely enjoyed our stay. The room was incredibly comfortable, large, lots of light, and very quiet. The bathroom was large and the beds were comfortable. The hotel itself is old Austria with lots of wood. The breakfast was fantastic, including everything you could possibly imagine for an Austrian hotel breakfast. The hotel has about six or seven parking spaces in a garage, so if you're bringing a car you should reserve a spot. Most people seem to arrive by train if they are staying overnight. The first time you try to find the hotel it will be an adventure. You have to get right into Dürnstein which has very narrow streets. The hotel is through an archway near the church. There are a lot of day trippers so driving during the late morning or early afternoon is an adventure. The restaurant had an excellent menu of local specialties. Every meal we had there was excellent. The only problem is that the restaurant closes about 4:00 PM on Saturday and except for breakfast for hotel guests isn't open at all on Sunday. We left after breakfast on Sunday so I don't know what else was available in Dürnstein or whether you'd have to drive 10 minutes to Krem, which is a little larger.

Nice & friendly & cozy, with comfortable rooms (views either to the garden, or to the Durnstein ruins), with a hotel garage, and with a reasonable price. In the hotel restaurant, please try a fantastic home-made cuisine (Wiener Schnitzel, Apricot Strudel, Home-made Broth, ...) accompanied with a great Wachau wine (try Domaine Wachau Loibenberg, Gruener Veltliner). If the weather allows, enjoy the garden restaurant. Mr. Schendl is a great gardener, he has flowers everywhere, and he even grows his own wine grapes and in the right season (September/October), he serves them for breakfast. Another highlight is an apricot nectar and a home-made apricot marmalade. We have been going back and forward in the last six years, usually in May with the bikes and in September/October for the wine tasting trips and boat trips, and we are always very happy here.

The galleried courtyard is especially spectacular and a great place for a drink in warmer weather (I have previously uploaded pics to Yelp). But now it is December and I decided to eat indoors in the cozy dining room. This dining room dominated by a classic old Austrian tile stove was all decorated for Christmas which only added to the atmosphere. And my food was very good. Their Schweinebraten (roasted pork medallions) are well-known and should be as they were tender, juicy, and flavorful. The Erdäpfelknödel were filling and the warm bacon and cabbage salad was superb. A glass of the wonderful local Kremser wine completed the meal. Though there are many places to eat in Krems, Zur alten Post is certainly one of the most atmospheric and reliable.
