TLDR: All around the best experience! Barely any flaws This was my 2nd time ever staying a hostel. I stayed around XMAS time and it was well worth the decision to choose Wombats. I definitely would stay at this chain again. [ PRICING ] It is cheaper to book directly with Wombats than through a service site, like HostelWorld. However, the price difference is insignificant (only a couple of dollars) There are different types of rooms available. You can choose from a mixed or female-only room, how many people are in your dorm (3-8 ppl). It just depends on what is available at the time. Private rooms are more expensive and are better suited if you have enough people to fulfill the space or are willing to pay more. I'm not sure if prices change depending on when you book (with exception of major events of course). [ SERVICE ] The staff is great, friendly, and helpful. During Christmas, the staff provided a list of places that are open which is super helpful. [ CHECK-IN/OUT ] Checking is a smooth and easy process. Front desk is open 24 hours. To receive your key, instead of a financial deposit, you need to leave some form of ID with them (i.e. drivers license or other non-passport ID). Make sure to have one accessible but be sure to give them one you would not need during your trip. For instance, it might be good to keep your student ID since some places will give you student discounts and require proof. They give you a map of the city with suggestions for food, places to sightsee, etc. It's nice to reference. You also get a coupon for a free drink at the bar. These definitely help welcome you into the city and the hostel environment. The front desk should also give you a number tag so that you can mark your bed in your dorm. The number matches what locker number you have. Make sure to give this back when checking out or you will be charged. [ DORMS ] The dorms are very safe. In order to get inside to access the rooms, you need a key card. For your room itself, use the same card to get in. Sheets are provided for each bed. You need to put it on yourself which can take time and be confusing at first. I recommend just getting it done with so you can just come back and lay down. When you are checking out, be sure to bring down the sheets. The room as a whole is spacious and clean. The bunk beds are spaced out from each set in the room so it does not feel like you're super close to other people. It feels like you have your own personal space. I came with a friend in a 6 bed dorm and it felt like we had our own side in the room. For each bed, there is a space with an outlet, a small counter, and a light. Included in your room are lockers for safekeeping. They are secure and you need your key card to lock and unlock it. They are pretty big so there should be plenty of space to fit your belongings, such as a large backpack or small suitcase. There's a hanger rack. Inside the room is a section with tables and chairs. It encourages interactions and is nice to sit down especially when I am only taking a small break, do not want to climb back into bed especially when I have dirty clothes on. The bathroom is inside the room. It is pretty big and clean. There is space to leave your toiletries without having to leave it in the shower. [ AMENITIES ] There are several amenities. Free WIFI! The common room is super chill and relaxed. It's extremely comfy so you'll see people resting and falling asleep there. Laundry is downstairs. Each machine is 3€ but only accepts 50 cent coins. You can ask for change at the front desk if needed. The bar opens at 6pm. It always seems lively and the bartenders have always friendly. You can play pool and also buy games to play with people. The interior of the bar is super spacious and has a lot of seating. Great place to socialize and make friends. If you go up the stairs, there is a kitchen and eating area. You can purchase breakfast if you'd like. The eating area has a lot of space to chill or eat at. The kitchen has two fridges and labels. Pots, pans, utensils are free and accessible. [ CULTURE/COMMUNITY ] To my surprise, it seemed like there was a diverse range of people. There are young travelers as well as people who seem to be in their 40s. Everyone is friendly (staff and travelers) and I was able to easily meet people from all across the world. I recommend going to the bar to socialize and putting yourself out there! [ LOCATION ] The hostel is in a very good location and has a lot nearby. A lot of places are within walking distance and there is a bus stop and train station nearby. Within the area, there are many food places to try. There is a grocery right next door and many Asian markets in the block. Directly across is the Naschmarkt market which has lots of seafood. If you are young and wanting to party, you've found the right hostel in Vienna! From the minute you check in, you get a free drink ticket. If you've been there, done that... and enjoy your peace, tired of people, need air conditioning, and enjoy a bathroom all to yourself -- book somewhere else! I stayed in a room with 3 other girls. If you have never been to Europe in the summer, it is common for your place to NOT have air conditioning. So, be prepared to sweat!! The lounge downstairs is the coolest spot in the hostel (literally & figuratively). But, remember, if you are young & wanting to party, the bar/club is right across the lounge... The location of the hostel is not a bad spot. It is right across the Naschmarkt, which sells pretty much everything! It is also not too far from all the museums in Vienna. If you are planning on going further out, you can also purchase a Vienna Card, which was my best friend. You can hop in & out and see much more of Vienna compared to if you did taxis (which can be crazy expensive if you add it all up). read more

Everything about this hostel is nearly perfect. As many amenities as you can imagine. The rooms are extremely comfortable. The location is as good as it gets. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would pass on the food at the bar, but I won't dock them points because I didn't really expect the food to be good, nor did I stay there with intentions of eating at the hostel. So, this hostel could be good or bad depending on what you are looking for. Really the atmosphere is a lot more like a hotel where you share a room than a traditional hostel. I've stayed in probably a dozen hostels on multiple continents and this is by FAR the biggest. Most people here seem to be travelling with companions, and so that paired with the large size made it really difficult to meet people compared to most European hostels. The other travellers who were alone mostly kept to themselves, other than a few at the bar that I chatted with for a few minutes. A lot of other travelers acted offended if you so much as spoke to them, and one evening I left my coat unattended for under 3 minutes and came back and a girl was moving my stuff to sit, despite there being about 30 open seats to sit in in the room. Just bizarre. There are people at this hostel ranging in age from high schoolers to 80 year olds, which again could be a pro or con. It was clean, the lockers seem secure, and the front desk is open 24 hours which is good if you have a strange check in or out time. There is a kitchen, but its quite small and the two times I went to use it it was so overrun with young teenagers mulling around that I couldnt even grab a plate. Additionally, my room was freezing and only a thin comforter was provided, which was especially miserable after a very cold day about town. Also please note that instead of a key deposit you need to leave your drivers license or other non-passport ID, so have one accessible. read more

Hostel was located in a nice neighborhood with a metro stop nearby. The staff was friendly and their coffee was good. They charged an extra fee to have coffee at the hostel as opposed to taking it to-go. The room was nice but was very hot. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. This is my second time staying in a hostel. It is definitely way better than the hostel I stayed in Budapest. It almost seems like a hotel. In the lobby, there are plenty of seats to hang out. There are also computers for you to use, but for extra cost. The staff at the front desk are nice and helpful. Check-in is at 2pm, but they can store your luggage for you in a locked room at your own discretion. My friend and I shared a 4-girl dorm room with two solo travelers. There were two sets of bunk beds. The beds were in good condition in that it did not creak when you climb up and down the bed. By each bed, there is a mini shelf on the wall to place small items and a wall plug. There are lockers in the room to secure your belongings. The bathroom was clean and brightly lit. The water pressure from the shower is stong! Stronger than any hotel I've stayed at! When you check in, they give you a ticket for a free drink. Use it to check out the bar. It is a pretty awesome place to hang out and meet other travelers. They have happy hour specials and a pool table. Cash only. They serve breakfast in the morning for about €3. They also have a communal kitchen for folks to use. Just clean up after yourself. If I return to Vienna, I don't mind staying here again. I met some fun solo travelers and ended up exploring with them one of the days. The entire stay at the Wombat, I felt pretty safe. The hallway to get to the rooms is locked and can only be accessed with a keycard. The hostel is located by a subway station and by the Naschmarkt so there are a few bars and plenty of Chinese restaurants. It is also a pretty quiet area. read more

PERFECT location.. we walked everywhere because the city is just so beautiful. It's very new and clean, and they come to take out your trash every day. Security is also top notch because the doors are locked everywhere and you need a badge to get in. You get a decent size locker for yourself as well. They also have a good size kitchen on the second floor which you can cook your own food.. there was a good number of people doing that. It's pretty convenient because you are staying in front of a farmer's market to grab all your groceries. They have a buffett breakfast for I think 3 euros (~$5) every morning which consists of hard boiled eggs, toast, cereal, fruit, coffee, orange juice, etc. It's filling if you stay long enough and eat until you get stuffed, but don't expect American omelette or hearty bacon and sausage. Downstairs in the lobby they have very good free-wifi and good guide books. The staff is very nice and very willing to translate anything for you in German or call to make reservations for you. When you arrive, they will give you a ticket for a free drink at their bar. During their happy hour, the beer is 1 EURO - awesome deal! Overall, I would DEFINITELY stay here again. The Naschmarkt is also a very good place to pick up fresh food or to sit at their yummy restaurants. 1 star docked because they wi-fi doesn't extend into the bedrooms. Also, I was there in September when the weather was fair and the rooms were still VERY VERY VERY hot with no AC. There was a fan in the room that we kept on all night and also left the windows open all day/all night. read more

Each bed had a little stand with a light and charger. The bathroom was in the room, super super clean. Sometimes you just have to book a hostel and hope for best. If you need somewhere central, cheap and to share with friends - hostels are often the way to go. But boy are there some shockers out there. Not this Wombats. It feels new, the staff are ridiculously helpful and friendly and its very very good value. The rooms are large, function well, not overly noisy and have comfortable beds. Great so far. The downstairs bar is also a lot of fun - you'll get a couple of free beers on arrival to help you settle in - and busy on the weekend. Or any night people want to party. Don't be surprised if you find yourself pump-actioning a water gun and shooting down the first shot in a super long domino chain of jagerbombs. Things can get silly. Then in the morning you'll pay bugger all for an all you can eat continental breakfast which is well stocked and fresh. Would happily recommend this place to anyone. read more

One of the best hostels I've ever stayed at! Clean, friendly, lively, and fun! The first thing I look at when I get to my room is the bathroom and the shower. I stayed in a 6 bed room and it had one bathroom, but it was super clean and the shower had really good pressure which is important to me since I have thick hair that needs good washing when I travel. They have bike rental available which made it super convenient. It is located right across the street from the market which was super nice! I will definitely stay here again when I come back! read more

I felt really out of place here, like I was always on guard and never really comfortable. Although it was only my second experience staying at a place like this, I feel like I now know exactly what I don't want in a hostel. If you are between the ages of 18 and 23 and want a place where you get get completely hammered without worrying about getting any kind of rest whatsoever, then this place is for you. I suppose you would call this a "party" hostel. It's filled with young people who want nothing more than to get wrecked at the really cheesy bar conveniently located right next to the front desk. They even give you free drink coupons upon checking in. The music emanating from the bar lasts all night, maybe until 3 or 4 in the morning. The walls of the rooms are extremely thin - this makes it easy to hear all the drunk kids stumbling around the hallways at all hours of the evening and morning. Maybe 10 years ago I would have thought this place was awesome, but now it's just not my scene. Not everything was horrible, however. The people at the front desk were great - friendly and helpful; they provide breakfast, for a fee; everything seemed clean and maintained very well; and best of all, the location was perfect. Everything you would want to see was within walking distance or close to other transportation. If I ever get to Vienna again, I will try to find somewhere else to stay. This is the best hostel. Location: Right across the street from Naschmarkt, a metro stop (Kettenbruckengasse) and along a street with grocery stores. Price: So cheap! We paid 18 euro per night per person for a 4-6 female room. Amenities: Where do I even begin? - Free sheets, comfy mattresses, and down pillows - Cool key card system that even works on your locker, so no need to bring a pad lock - Cleaning lady comes every day to empty the trash and clean the bathroom - Bathrooms are SPOTLESS - Seating area with table INSIDE our room (I've never seen this; most hostel owners would have crammed another bunk bed in that space in my opinion) - Tons of seating in the lobby, with free wifi - Many, many computer stations that cost 50 cents per 20 minutes, or 1 euro for an hour - Free welcome drink voucher upon arrival (wine, beer, juice) - Fun bar with cheap drinks and events (Santa came on December 6! An Austrian tradition.) - The greatest continental breakfast spread I've ever seen at a hostel. It costs 3.70 but it's worth it. So many types of cheese, bread, spreads, fresh fruits and veggies, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, muesli, cereal, nutella and peanut butter, juice, and two legit espresso machines (none of that instant stuff!) - The girl rooms had full-length mirrors and a blow dryer in the bathroom, but you can also borrow one from the front desk - The front desk also lends out guide books, power adapters, and umbrellas - The "info station" bulletin board is very large and has all sorts of useful information, like little pieces of paper showing how to get back to the airport, day trip information, etc. - Free walking tour on Saturdays - Cooking lessons every Friday - "Vienna in 72 hours" with a very detailed itinerary - Free map with tons of great recommendations and tips, with each destination numbered on the map, and a metro guide too. Of course, I would've loved for the WIFI to reach the bedrooms, but for all of the other perks, I didn't mind. I also thought the rooms got a bit stuffy, even in cold weather, but we just cracked the window and it was fine. Vienna is a gorgeous city and Wombat's is definitely the place to stay when you visit. Remember all of those movies you saw when you were in your young teens, watching college kids go crazy? That's this place. My first room was in the 8-bed and we were 3 ladies with all boys. This would have been fine with us but it smelled like feet AND there were two snorers, one on the beat and the other who snored in syncopation. We changed rooms the next day to a nice little 6-bed, but a friend of ours who came with us lost 150 euros in it. The rooms are dirty, the bar is dirty (good drink specials), but it's a really awesome place to meet people. I would stay here again just to make friends, but the quality is really pretty poor. read more

Ironically, when I first booked this accommodation, I thought I was actually booking the Wombat's hostel across the street from Wien Westbahnhof. A little surprised when I realized that THIS hostel was located out by the Nashtmarkt - about five metro stops and a train change away. Turns out this Wombat's hostel is in a very hip location, most notably, directly across the street from what must be one of the coolest food markets in ALL of Europe. The hostel, itself, is very clean, featuring the typical 'rent a bunk in a big room' accommodations as well as more hotel-like rooms for an amazingly reasonable price. Very convenient to the U-Bahn (less than 5 minutes) but you can actually walk to Stephansplatz in about 20 minutes. Breakfast was a bit sparse, but completely adequate by youth hostel standards. Every room has a private bath, and towels can be had for the asking. Difficult to justify the extra 300 euro for the privilege of staying in some name-brand hotel. And if you're a foodie, the location simply can NOT be beat! read more

Great location! Very close to the Street market and train station. Room is fairly clean with great atmosphere in the lobby. The only thing I dislike about is that the toilet and the shower room is separated. I understand if you want to separate the toilet and the shower, but why is the sink also separated with the toilet. I live in a 8 people room. And I see people going to the toilet without washing their hand afterwards because there are people using the shower. That is just disgusting!! read more

**BED BUGS FOUND** My friend and I stayed at Wombats for 3 nights and needless to say we will never be staying at a Wombats hostel again. I woke up with severe bug bites across my left arm the morning of our departure. When my friend was striping her bed she saw the parasites scurrying across her mattress. Even worse than finding the bed bugs themselves was the reaction of the staff members at reception. Or should I say lack of reaction. The woman we talked to brushed off the situation, not even apologizing to us. She offered no compensation and merely seemed glad that we were on our way out that afternoon. It didn't even seem like the hostel was going to do anything about the situation, which is horrifying considering the severity of bed bugs and the number of guests the hostel serves. After complaining about having to do our laundry to get rid of the bed bugs the staff finally offered to fund our loads. We spent 3 and a half hours that day doing laundry because one of the dryers was broken. It was a complete waste of our last day in Vienna. I strongly discourage anyone from staying at Wombats. Cleanliness for a hostel should be a priority, but clearly the staff of Wombats could care less about their guests beds being infested with bed bugs. This was my first hostel experience and I was definitely spoiled! The staff was all kind and helpful. Even the bartenders went out of their way to draw us maps and answer all our questions. Breakfast had a good selection for the price. The rooms were clean and spacious. There was lots of room for luggage and the lockers were a great bonus that I wasn't expecting. I loved the convenience of having a light and outlet with each bed. The hostel provided a free walking tour which was awesome.
