The principal, Mr. Zhou, is very knowledgeable and professional in the field of education. I do not know any after school principals would do the same thing that he is doing to the kids. He takes the after school center not just as a place for the kids to stay after school, but also a place to learn and improve. He always has meetings with teachers after every single report card pick-up (including progress report) to make sure the kids are doing well. If he finds out there are kids fall behind, he would find out what the problems and help them to improve. Besides, he always pays extra for the tutors to stay longer if the are kids cannot finish homework before the tutors leave. The teachers are very passionate and nice as well, they care about the kids. You can tell when they stay over time to help the kids or talk to individual parents. The working environment is very nice as well, very spacious, all classrooms have play areas, library corners, and learning corners where kids can do extra practice on workbooks, etc. Overall, I think this is the best after school learning center I've known, and I would definitely send my kids here when I have my own.

They took the time to evaluate our children, establish a baseline and explain to us their recommendation and a way forward. I really like the data driven approach to identifying areas of need. I was most impressed with the Director giving us a clear plan with timelines, costs and end dates. What I liked the most about her is the clear, honest and pragmatic manner in which they articulated the options and solutions without any sales pitch. We would recommend Huntington Learning Center in Lincoln Park to other parents to help their kids in areas of need.

My son benefited from the individual attention in the study skills program from the teachers who really challenged him to become an independent learner. His study habits improved so much, that homework is no longer a chore and I am not struggling with him to get started. My daughter has displayed learning difficulties in a number of content areas, with math being the subject she had the most trouble with. After about 6 weeks in the program she earned her first B in math on her midterm progress report! I can't express how happy we are with this center and the teachers! She was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and she is gaining skills that she can use both at home and in the classroom that help her to focus.

My daughter is starting her 7th grade classical program at Skinner West. I took her to Mathnasium West Loop today, hoping to find something that is helpful to her academics. The director named Andrew hosted us with a big smile on his face. Andrew spent 10-15 minutes with my daughter for an initial assessment. After that, he took me to the office for "consultation". 1. He told me my daughter was doing pretty good and being respectful. 2. He shared with me that my daughter could not solve 3^(-2). He also shared with me that the 7th grade classical program assumed students already knew this. (Okay, really?) 3. He recommended two sections per week, one hour each. When I asked how would each section entail. He said something about develop a learning plan and execute the plan. I asked again how my daughter would be spending her time in one typical section . Andrew didn't directly answer my question. I pressed on, asking whether it is about working on some problems with the help of tutors. Andrew seemed to acknowledge it. 4. I asked about the qualifications of the tutors. Andrew told me it varies. The tutors can be parents, rock climbers, UIC students, high school students. They are trying to limit the use of high school students though. 5. I asked whether it is okay for my kid to try a couple of sessions (with payment), before we fully commit. He questioned me why the trial is needed. I told him each kid is different, we want to make sure there is a good fit between my daughter and the teaching/tutoring service. 6. Andrew questioned me on why I was being so "cynical" and asked if there is anything he can help with my problem. 7. After accusing me being cynical, Andrew still asked me to confirm the schedule and sign up. I told him I need to go back to discuss with my wife. Andrew asked me to call my wife right away and told me those available slots might be gone anytime. I refused. ... Now coming back to my opinion, if a parent needs a place to amplify the anxiety over kids' academics, this place could help.

Then when we showed up for the first session, his wife was running the show and he was nowhere to be seen. It was a bait and switch. He must know that she doesn't have a customer oriented communication style, so he closes the deal. My child became miserable going there, so we had to find an alternative.
