This is the real deal! They have three sake sommelier on staff. I appreciated that I asked for advice on which sake to try and he explained how to choose, and recommended two options. I asked him to pick, and he chose the cheaper of the two. Sake is good at first, but I grew tired of the taste quickly. The food was delicious and beautiful! There is a nice feel to the place, too. read more

This is great sushi with incredible authentic flavors and options. The service is outstanding. Our server was super and knew the menu and its details. He had spent time in Japan and offered great suggestions. The place feels like a real Japanese sushi house. It is a small but quaint little spot right on pollack street. I had the authentic ramen and niguri blue fin. I would highly recommend this spot in New Bern. Great for lunch or dinner, just know the hours since they close to ready for the next service. read more

Fantastic sushi and ramen. The Tonkatsu pork ramen was a warm bowl of deliciousness with a creamy broth. Perfect for a chilly night. The spicy tuna roll was the best one I've ever had. Normally that's a pretty average roll but this one had so much flavor and it was BIG. Wife got the sassy role and it was amazing too, topped with fresh tuna. This place is authentic, quaint, and really tasty. The specialty rolls are pricey but they are bigger than a lot of rolls I usually get. read more

Food is good but not worth the price. This is super overpriced sushi. Service is ok. Not the friendliest place either.

Second visit to Kuma. I'd argue that it's the best Sushi Bar in the eastern part of NC. Nice sake selection as well. The service has always been friendly. It's fairly small, but it's worth the wait. read more

First time here. We enjoyed the service and cleanliness so much, we give 4 stars. Decent enough sushi/rolls/ Crab Rangoon. We would recommend since that's hard to find in this part of NC. The fish was fresh, and the portion size big, but more rice than fish. Not authentically Japanese sushi rice either, too hard. Super overpriced (more than Philly area), but the presentations were beautiful. read more

Kuma Sushi Bar - Sushi Bars Near Me - New Bern, North Carolina

This is a locally owned family business (they also have Thai Angel right around the corner). Coming from Seattle (and the Bay Area before that), which offers an embarrassment of riches for Japanese cuisine, Kuma just doesn't live up to the hype. They cover $25 rolls in syrupy eel sauce and mayo and food is just meh. It's pretty expensive, as well. On the plus side, the ambience is very nice, the service is great and plating is above average. read more

Made a last minute date for myself in this wonderful restaurant. I was greeted the moment I walked in and sat down immediately. The restaurant was very clean. I chose to sit at the sushi bar. The waiting staff were all so kind and attentive, spreading that southern charm and hospitality! I sampled the pineapple sake, absolutely delicious and totally recommend!! I ordered the Shoyu Ramen with Chicken Chashu and a Spicy Tuna Roll. The ramen was delicious and easy to devour!! I've never had ramen before so I have no other reference of experience but this was so satisfying! The sushi chef also provided a chili sauce for the ramen and it was a perfect balance of spice! My spicy tuna roll was so delicious and fresh! My roll was 8 large slices. I ate everything and walked out stuffed! I will definitely come back, with friends! read more

What a pleasant experience at this boutique restaurant. The customer service is the best I have ever seen at a restaurant in downtown New Bern. Geoffrey explained all about the saki selections to choose from and Miss Janya was truly a sushi artist. We enjoyed the Sakura Cherry Blossom sushi roll special which had the most delicious crab meat and a masterpiece of Emerald Roll. It was too beautiful to eat but we did! New Bern was first settled by Swiss from Bern Switzerland. Bern in English is Bear. So there are Bear statues all over New Bern. You know what the Japanese word Kuma translates to English? Bear. read more

For New Bern, this is pretty ok. Not sure the price justifies the quality but the service is top notch and the ambiance is great so that really balances it out. Great sake list if you like sake. I only tried the sashimi and nigiri so I can't speak to ramen, appetizers or rolls. The fish was kinda fishy but not so fishy that you can't eat it. If you like pure sushi- uni, and yellowtail are great choices! The best uni I've ever had in eastern North Carolina and the best environment to have sushi and sake. Will definitely be back to try more- and will definitely say it's the best sushi in New Bern. read more

Ignore the other reviews saying the food wasn't worth the money. This is bar far the freshest sushi we've had since leaving the west coast and you're gonna pay for it. This isn't your every Friday night sushi. This is your "let's go to the best sushi around" spot. The ingredients are all fresh (you can taste the difference!), the portions are larger than other spots in town, the flavors and textures are all balanced and delicious, the sashimi was great, and the service was some of the best in this area. They were very pleasant, attentive, and knowledgeable about all of their products. From the maitre d', to the server, and busser everything felt seamless and friendly. The decor was elegant, minimalistic, and inviting. If you don't care about any of this go for the food! read more

This establishment is probably one of the finest sushi restaurants in Eastern NC. The portions are exceptionally larger and very fresh. The craftsmanship of their nigiri and sushi rolls is spot on. This place can easily be a Michelin star hot spot along the coast. The prices on the menu are appropriate and suitable for the freshest and most delicious menu items. Finally, the service here is exceptional as customers are frequently checked on for refills and quality of experience. read more

Hands down - one of the best sushi spots we've visited. We had the Chef's Special - wagu surf &turf, the vegetable dumplings, and the kushikatsu roll with a bottle of Tenryo sake. Spectacular sushi and excellent service. The portions were enormous. The crab Rangoon was simply amazing

The staff was helpful. Despite a busy night, they worked quickly to get our family of 5 seated. I got ramen, the jammy egg was perfect but it would have been a lot better if the broth was actually hot. The 3 folks who got sushi were decently pleased but it certainly wasnt especially noteworthy. read more

A really great find for sushi in New Bern. Great portion sized sushi and tasted great!! We will be back.

Another Saturday afternoon sushi dinner.we showed up without a reservation with 7 people, no worries...we had to wait. Nice selection of sake. Drink menu was nice. We got maki rolls and nigiri. The fish was fresh and delicious. The rice was probably twice or three times to much however the wasabi was placed between the rice and the fish correctly. Rice was perfectly seasoned, sweet and tangy but way to large for a single bite. Maki rolls were massive! Please offer half roll options or cut the proportion and cut the price. It's just to much...worth it but dang. We loved it except for the proportion was off. We'll be back soon. read more

The service was good, the sushi was average. The rolls are very large which some people may like but they are too big. Sections of a sushi roll should be bite sized so you can enjoy the combination of flavors. The shashimi pieces were too large to eat in one bite and no way with chop sticks can you cut into portions. We love sushi but bigger is not better when it comes to sushi. The seaweed salad is 5 stars. read more

While this is a small spot, it's definitely worth the wait. Service is fantastic - we were checked on multiple times by everyone who worked there. Hands down, best sushi in the area. My favorite restaurant in town. Fantastic food, service and ambiance. I haven't had anything I don't like, but my favorite is the sassy roll! MY FIRST REVIEW: This place is a pure and honest 9.8/10. First off, sushi isn't my favorite type of food, but this restaurant ALMOST made it my favorite. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. read more

Pretty interior, gorgeous food, great service! I went for lunch and sat at the sushi bar at a spot where I got to see all dishes being plated before being served. Everything looks sumptuous and like art. I had the crab salad and a special roll with soft shell crab, both were large portions and yummy. I want to try the seared tuna nigiri as it looked amazing. It is pricey but worth it! read more
