Kula Karate is awesome! I've tried a few but Kula is definitely THE BEST program I've found for my kids. It's helped them to develop leadership skills that will equip them to be successful throughout their lives. All 3 of my boys are Kula Ninjas; the oldest has been going for 7 years now. The instructors are always excellent - I trust them completely - and the boys take away valuable lessons every day. Our elementary age kids have been attending Kula Karate after school for almost 4 years. I am grateful to our school's principal because she recommended the Kula Karate classes-I didn't want to start the kids in something (less than great program) and feel regretful, been there, done that ;/ . The karate program far surpassed my expectations....YAY!! Master Wayne and Coach Ninja Nancy are so great with kids of all ages. I wondered how my little one would do and that was 4 years ago-the classes are designed to hold their interest and build their confidence.  I don't know what other martial arts places are like, but the instructors care about the kids and care about teaching them respect, self control and impressive karate skills. We love the Kula Karate family! We've been sending our son to Kula since Summer 2018. He's really had such a great time, and has even ranked up to orange belt in May! The classes are vibrant, energetic and challenging. I think my favorite part is watching the kids all meditate and then reflect on what they thought about. It's really been such a positive experience for our kiddo. I've seen the Kula team adapt quickly to these new wild Covid times and move all classes online to zoom. Kula Karate is a terrific martial arts learning facility (dojo?) and in my opinion the best in Austin for keeping younger and less talented kids motivated and feeling good about themselves. A mix of patient sensai's, well trained assistants, and ancillary staff keep the classes running smooth even if a child has a melt down or is having trouble concentrating. Each child feels successful and important at Kula Karate regardless of skill level which makes the experience fun & rewarding whether participation is bent toward earning an eventual black belt or just having some fun with friends after school! read more

I will have to admit that Kula is the first yoga studio that I've been to. But I still have to give my 5-star shout out, because first time was a charm when it came time for me to find a place to get my yoga on. Kula offers a wide variety of classes for differing interests and skill levels. I opted to start by taking an 8 week beginner course with Connie, and now continue to take her ongoing twice-weekly classes. I've also dropped in on some prenatal yoga and prenatal fit classes, both of which were great! The instructors and staff here are so supportive and always take an individual interest in each class member. Lovelovelove this yoga studio. Meg teaches the Saturday morning hip-hop yoga class and it's always packed. The music is great and the workout is even better. I've also been to a Vinyasa Flow and Hatha class. At the Hatha class there were members from the community learning how to sign the yoga classes to make them accessible to the deaf community and in the Vinyasa class there were teenagers for a mixed-age class. Kula offers PE credit for high schoolers (wish that was around when I was a kid!) and tons of prenatal workshops. They're an amazing community resource. read more

I went on a friend's recommendation, and it was amazing. I walked and was greeted by Susan, a very friendly participant and teacher. They offer Kundalini classes every Friday from noon-1pm on a donation basis. That's right whatever you think is appropriate. The instructor Greg is extremely knowledgeable and a great teacher. He conducts the class at a steady pace that allows even a novice like myself to participate and learn lots of new meditations and breathing exercises. After the class we had a 5 minute cool-down session where we lie down, relax, and enjoy some great ambient music. The staff is friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, I really wasn't challenged by any of the five classes I attended there. I felt that they were structured to newer yogis. Also, four of the classes only had two other students or in one case, just me. While I appreciated that the class wound up being a private lesson, I went for the dynamics of a group practice. I've been doing yoga since 2003, on the instructions of my orthopedic surgeon. I've tried several different yoga studios, both at gyms and standalone. Kula is the best yoga studio I've found. I'm a man, and not particularly flexible at that. And while I've been doing yoga for some time, I haven't done a lot of other exercise. In addition to what I'll call "regular" yoga, Kula offers a few real "workout yoga" classes (core yoga and hip hop yoga), combining both the stretching / flexibility of yoga and the activity of a solid aerobic workout with strength training included for good measure. It is definitely the best all around workout I've ever experienced, and whenever I don't go for a while, I find myself slipping more out of shape. The classes have students with a variety of capabilities - several other yoga instructors, from other studios are in the classes, along with me, who might be considered the comic relief (although no one ever makes me feel that way except myself)... Meg (the instructor) ensures everyone feels comfortable with what they are capable of, and challenges the entire spectrum to improve their own capabilities. The children's classes are also incredible. This is one of the few places where my son, who has ADHD is really able to be calm and concentrate, and Amy, one of the kids' teachers, helps him be better both in and out of the studio. I'd recommend this studio to anyone, no matter their life situation or yoga ability. read more

Our 6 year old daughter watched a Kula Karate demo on Zoom in the fall of 2020 and begged to do karate for months. She was so excited when they cleverly pivoted and offered an outdoor class at her school! She thoroughly enjoyed the spring semester, taught by Coach Cory, who has a great way with kids. She came home counting korean and teaching our family how to meditate, as well as demonstrating all the moves and skills she's learned. She learned a lot of confidence and focus doing karate and has received her white and orange belts which she is very proud of and displays on her bedroom wall. My son (10 years old) has been attending the summer Ninja Training classes once a week and he always has a great time and looks forward to going to the next session. It's been a relief for me that he likes it so much, since he has been going through an extremely shy, anxious phase for the last couple of years and it's been really hard for me to convince him to try any new activities. I think the coaches at Kula Karate have just the right mix of challenging the kids, while still being patient and easygoing with them. Kula Karate has been fantastic for our daughter. I can't believe how attentive she is in these classes - honestly, I wish Coach Wayne could pass along whatever magical spell he casts. She is laser focused the whole hour, including sitting in meditation for 2 minutes at a go without rustling about. She loves her regular schoolyear karate classes and has been especially excited about this summer's miniseries Zoom classes (that might have a lot to do with her liking all the "stuff" - nun-chucks, a board, a bo). I was really impressed with how Kula swung over to virtual classes during this coronavirus situation, and although C would prefer live over Zoom, she still gets very enthusiastic every week. My daughter and I have been going to the Mom and Tot yoga class with Monica for the last year and a half. My sister had some extra classes and encouraged us to try it out. I was nervous about going because I had not done any kind of yoga in years and my daughter is reticent around strangers. It turns out we had nothing to worry about because Monica is a fantastic teacher with a young child of her own. She can accommodate both the high energy individuals and those that take a while to warm up. There are also various activities in addition to the yoga that are always a lot of fun. We've planted bean plants for Earth Day, made dream catchers and even made ornaments for Christmas. There is often a theme-based story time and each class ends with a relaxing meditation for both mom and tot. read more

This place is awesome. A friend had tried the prenatal yoga class and told me about it. I tried it yesterday and really enjoyed it. The teacher was really nice and she asked everyone at the beginning of class if there was anything specific bothering them so that she could work on it. The class was only about 5 people but I was told sometimes it gets a little larger. I felt like I got a real workout even though it was modified for pregnancy. After class they have a little area to sit and relax for a second with really good tea and chocolates. They have a ton of different classes and some for children as well. the prices seemed really reasonable to me as well. It seems weird but I left there almost as relaxed as if I had just gotten a massage. read more

Our family loves Kula Karate!! My daughter (10) has been going for a year and a half and my son (7) has been taking classes for the past year. Master Wayne, Coach Nancy and their assistant coaches are all very upbeat and personable. They place equal focus on building up the character of the child as much as developing their skills. Austin Kula is a small, very kid-friendly yoga studio in the Tarrytown neighborhood. It's close to my office, and I have tried core yoga and prenatal yoga. I am so happy we chose Kula over anyone else. Our son loves going to Karate and has become obsessed with Karate & being a Ninja since day 1. The amount of improvement he has made in such a short amount of time has been incredible to watch. Master Wayne and Nancy are very friendly & patient with the kids too. They make the class both fun & education with a lot of drills and training techniques for the kids to practice at home, if they'd like.
