Behind the door you will find a small bar ($4 for beers), a small lounge area with red couches and a piano, and a stage space. This performance space for theater, art, and music right by Bushwick Park, "is a full-scale not-for-profit performance venue and Presenting Organization dedicated to bringing a continuum of art and artists to the Bushwick community". There was a metal door with, "Bushwick Starr" written on the front, you go up a flight of stairs, and once on the landing, it looks like an apartment floor or a place for studios. Its easy to find once you've climbed a flight of stairs. Very interesting venue. Small, but cozy. Feels like someone's living room. There was free champagne before 12. Too sweet, but I aint complaining about anything free. Music was ok, but didn't get me in the mood to dance. Left around 1PM when the party was starting up...god we're so lame.

The quality of instruction varied depending on the teacher--some were average, while others were excellent. It was really a matter of who you got. One instructor, unfortunately, had a habit of cutting my lesson time short if she was running late due to previous students. On one occasion, she even tried to delay giving me a receipt after I paid in cash, claiming she was short on time. I insisted on getting it immediately, which she reluctantly did. I suspect she felt she could get away with this behavior because I came in solo, without a partner. Thankfully, she no longer works there, so that shouldn't be a concern for future students. My next instructor, however, was fantastic. He often gave me extra time and his teaching was clear and effective. I really felt I got my money's worth with him. Overall, I'd say the studio is a great choice for salsa lessons. Bachata can be hit or miss, depending on which instructors are on staff. Lately, it's also been a bit more difficult to book private lessons. That said, I came in with two left feet and left with the confidence to dance the basics. If you find a good instructor, take full advantage and book as many lessons as you can--they might not be there forever.

As for other reviewers saying they would like a live stream, I disagree. The last thing the teachers need is parents watching their every move. It's family run so you're never talking to someone who isn't directly involved in the day to day operations. As popular as dance is for kids I expected this to be a big hit on the wallet but it is very affordable. I highly recommend this school for all ages and levels.

Keeping in mind how tough it is to wrangle a roomful of tots, the dance instructor was impressive in her focus and engagement, laying the foundation of a classic ballet experience. Music included some of the childhood classic tunes we all know by heart, as well as classical piano standards and even a lovely instrumental version of "Here Comes the Sun." Even when a few of the children began to become distracted, our instructor managed to ramp up the interest level with ribbons and participatory exercises. Getting just one kid to pay attention is a big enough challenge, so I was in awe to see what a pro could do. Immediately, we felt like we had been welcomed into a little community. All the staff members we encountered were friendly and helpful, which I especially appreciate in such a chaotic situation as a herd of families arriving and a little bewildered. My only wish is that the space were larger, but otherwise this is a wonderful neighborhood dance school. Well done!
