Unfortunately the way to who approached me then belittled me into my lack of German language skills and then had a conversation in German (I can read, right, understand German but I cannot speak German) with the occupants of a table directly opposite my table. During that conversation he said that he 'refused to speak English to someone who doesn't speak German'. He then made remarks about My being 'a foreigner and that this is Germany and you must speak German in Germany' He then came back to my table and wiped it down and spoke to me in English and when I pointed out to him that he spoke English he then said to me "only if I like the people I'm speaking to". The racist remarks he made and the belittling of me in a conversation with complete strangers about my language skills is entirely inappropriate and to my understanding (I have my PhD in European tax law and my PhD in German human rights law) completely unlawful. The food was okay but nothing to write home about however even of the food was magnificent the service was absolutely appalling!!!!!! The young man should not be working in service; unfortunately for the owner of this establishment I am a senior officer at TripAdvisor and as a result of my experience here I will be speaking with our staff about how we promote this restaurant. I don't think we want anyone subjected to this kind of racist abuse!!!

There are only two drawbacks to this place; soccer fans and smokers. The soccer fans are in every pub in the city during and after games; there is no avoiding this. The only thing you can do is get hammered and join them as they scream at the TV screen. As for the smokers, they do have their own room. I call it The Cancer Closet. It isn't very effective at blocking smoke, however, and the entire place reeks by the end of the night. Including your hair and clothes. Overall, I would definitely recommend Schateke. If nothing else, it's worth seeing a pub with a ceiling that is 100% covered in fake grape vines. -- Oh God, My Wife Is German.

The Schweinshaxe and Eisbein are especially fine, the former exploding with molten fat from perfectly crisped skin. I rate Max W. at five stars for doing what it does so well, but to enjoy it--indeed to eat there at all--you must adhere exactingly to its Unwritten Laws. Despite its working man's prices and an interior looking like a down-at-heel Studentenkneipe this is a feinschmeker (gourmet) restaurant and must be treated as such. You need to reserve by telephone at least several days in advance, and humbly offer them an appealing number of diners (ideally either four or six: they have only 25 places at tables and four stools at the bar and must be ruthless about maximizing their yield: do not even think of asking for a table for one; they will simply refuse (reserve--and you do still need to reserve--a seat at the bar). Persons wandering in without a reservation hoping for a table--and especially tourists without German--are treated with fine forthright traditional north-German rudeness: "Nein! Nein! Weg! Weg!" (Sometimes in chorus.) This is a performance--once one has actually received permission to eat there the staff are warm and charming in a rough, Hannover, sort of way--but, I guarantee you (having suffered this) that you will not recognize the tone of your expulsion as a jolly act when it occurs, nor will you notice the ironical pleasure the regulars are taking in your fate, because you have just become a familiar--three or four times an hour--and well-loved part of the evening's entertainment.
