Stattdessen bin ich entsetzt und fassungslos nach Hause gefahren. Bestellt wurden zuerst die Getränke: ein alkoholfreies Bier und eine Cola. Angekommen sind jedoch ein ganz normales Bier und eine Cola. Wir haben nichts gesagt. Ein Gast vom Nachbartisch ist beim Hinsetzen gestürzt und hat dabei mein Getränk umgekippt. Wir haben nichts gesagt. Mit den vorhandenen Servietten haben wir alles so gut wie möglich sauber gemacht und das Angebot des gestürzten Gastes, mir eine neue Cola zu bezahlen, dankend abgelehnt. Als der Kellner zu uns kam und die völlig nassen Servietten sah, fragte er, wie das alles zustande gekommen sei. Nachdem ich ihm den Vorfall geschildert hatte, sagte er lachend: "Ja, ja, immer die Schuld auf die anderen schieben, immer!" Ich war sprachlos. Zwei Minuten später stand ich auf und suchte ihn, um unter vier Augen mit ihm zu sprechen: "Kennen wir uns etwa? Diese Aussage von vorhin unterstellt, dass wir uns kennen und dass es schon häufiger vorgekommen ist, dass ich die Schuld auf andere schiebe." Er antwortete: "Ne, ich bin halt ein lustiger Mensch." Ich kehrte daraufhin an meinen Platz zurück. Ein paar Minuten später kam er mit einer Cola in der Hand zurück und sagte: "Hier für Dich, weil wir einen schlechten Start hatten." Die Cola habe ich dankend abgelehnt: "Ne, danke. Das war nicht nötig." Er stellte sie trotzdem auf den Tisch. Ich habe selbst was anderes bestellt und die von ihm gebrachte Cola blieb von mir bis zum Ende der Partie unberührt. Insgesamt war dies mein erster wirklich negativer Eindruck nach vielen Besuchen. Fehler bei Bestellungen oder Missgeschicke können vorkommen. Was mich gestört hat, war vielmehr der Umgang mit der Situation und ein aus meiner Sicht unangebrachter Kommentar des taktlosen Kellners. Ich verzichte bewusst auf eine Beschreibung des betreffenden Kellners. Andernfalls wäre dieser für seine interne Hierarchie sofort erkennbar. Das ist nicht meine Absicht. Meine konstruktive Kritik richtet sich nicht nur an ihn, sondern soll für das ganze Team einfach was zum Nachdenken sein.

Unfortunately the way to who approached me then belittled me into my lack of German language skills and then had a conversation in German (I can read, right, understand German but I cannot speak German) with the occupants of a table directly opposite my table. During that conversation he said that he 'refused to speak English to someone who doesn't speak German'. He then made remarks about My being 'a foreigner and that this is Germany and you must speak German in Germany' He then came back to my table and wiped it down and spoke to me in English and when I pointed out to him that he spoke English he then said to me "only if I like the people I'm speaking to". The racist remarks he made and the belittling of me in a conversation with complete strangers about my language skills is entirely inappropriate and to my understanding (I have my PhD in European tax law and my PhD in German human rights law) completely unlawful. The food was okay but nothing to write home about however even of the food was magnificent the service was absolutely appalling!!!!!! The young man should not be working in service; unfortunately for the owner of this establishment I am a senior officer at TripAdvisor and as a result of my experience here I will be speaking with our staff about how we promote this restaurant. I don't think we want anyone subjected to this kind of racist abuse!!!

They serve French fries with ketchup and mayo, which is why my wife likes it, and they also serve 1-liter beers, which is why I like it. There are only two drawbacks to this place; soccer fans and smokers. The soccer fans are in every pub in the city during and after games; there is no avoiding this. The only thing you can do is get hammered and join them as they scream at the TV screen. As for the smokers, they do have their own room. I call it The Cancer Closet. It isn't very effective at blocking smoke, however, and the entire place reeks by the end of the night. Including your hair and clothes. Overall, I would definitely recommend Schateke. If nothing else, it's worth seeing a pub with a ceiling that is 100% covered in fake grape vines. -- Oh God, My Wife Is German.

They also say all the Bundesliga matches of Hannover 96 on different screens. I've been there a few times during some matches and there was a great vibe, lots of people in soccer jerseys.
